Pork & Apple Pie with Cheddar-Sage Crust
This recipe for Pork & Apple Pie with Cheddar-Sage Crust — a sweet-and-savory stunner — was inspired by the fruit and meat pies common in British cooking. Here, we layer apples on top of a spiced ground-pork filling and wrap it all up in a savory herbed crust. The flavors are fantastic together, and this dish has been the hit of many parties–an especially good buffet option. We think it’ll quickly become one of your favorite savory pie recipes.

Vegetarian Samosa-Style Potpies
The filling for these mini potpies is inspired by potato samosas, those delicious spiced dumplings that come fried in little triangular packets. Here, you bake the filling in ramekins with a puff pastry topper to create a simple and warming everyday meal.

Joanne Chang’s Chicken Potpie
Starting with good chicken stock, preferably homemade, the pie folds white-meat chicken, peas, carrots, and potatoes into Chang’s signature pie dough. You can assemble this pie and freeze it, then bake it right from the freezer (just add 10 to 15 minutes of baking time).

Beef & Ale Hand Pies
Who says savory pie recipes can’t be hand-held? Another nod to British cooking, these mini beef pies get a pleasingly bitter edge from a small amount of dark ale in the gravy. You can bake them ahead and freeze for an easy portable meal–just put them right from the freezer into a 300° oven until warm.

Lobster Pie
This dish is inspired by the original Lobster Pie recipe from The Publick House in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, which we ran in the October 1949 issue. Unapologetically rich and unforgettably delicious, it’s a celebration food that every New Englander should make at least once.

About 20 years ago, Jeff Smith aka The Frugal Gourmet prepared something called Shaker Ham and Oyster Pie,from his book “Frugal Gourmet Cooks American”. Has anyone tried this?
these wonderful recipes are a winter’s delight has my Cottage is nestled up against the Allegheny mountains I live in the wilderness and I bake pies I dig up the roots and the vegetables that I have planted and they make wonderful pies but you have given me more recipes thank you very much I appreciate it
My mom made meat stuffing every Christmas. A pork and Hamburg mix with Bells seasoning and it cooked in the pantry in a large electric skillet for hours. There was a large kitchen spoon next for stirring and tasting…always tasting! My mom stuffed the bird with it…wonderful and made a pie, too. And our family is Irish!! Just loved it and the stuffing made the best turkey sandwiches with cranberry…fond memories.
I hope you have the recipe and still make it. I’m 74 and always make this for christmas and thanksgiving. I have taught my 2 sons the recipe and they make it now. I lovvvveeeee it on turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce. Thanks for the memories!
What a great compilation, with lots of saves for family meals. I was hoping you’d include a recipe for the clam pie of Southeastern Massachusetts, found in every diner and other restaurants as well. I commuted from Cape Cod to New Bedford for work for 16 years, and I’m still trying to find the recipe for the pie I miss so much! Might I hope you’ll explore New Bedford’s wonderful greasy spoons and offer a recipe sometime in the future?
