This shredded wheat bread recipe makes a light, delicious tread that’s especially good for sandwiches.

Yield

2 loaves

Ingredients

2 large shredded wheat biscuits, crumbled
2 cups boiling water
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup molasses
3 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 cake compressed yeast
5 to 6 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

Pour boiling water over the shredded wheat. Add the molasses, salt and butter. Let cool to lukewarm. Add the yeast, dissolved in the lukewarm water. Mix together thoroughly. Add flour gradually until the mixture forms a firm dough.
Turn out on to a lightly floured board. Cover and let stand for 10 minutes, then knead the dough until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, turning to grease the top of the dough. Cover. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk (about 1 hour).

Punch down the dough. Divide in half; shape into two loaves. Place each one in a greased 8-1/2×4-1/2×2-1/2-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk (about 50 minutes).

Bake in a 325 degrees F oven for 50 minutes or until the loaves sound hollow when tapped. Turn out of the pans on to a wire rack.

  1. I only have regular or mini shredded wheat cereal. What is the amount of cereal in cups once shredded?

    1. Regular should be the big biscuits i would think , a 15 oz box has 18 biscuits should be .833333 oz per Biscuit or 2 Biscuits 1.66 oz. if you are buying the mini make sure you don’t get sugar coated.

  2. Thank you, it sounds good, I will try as I make a loaf of plain rugged white every two days , so willgather the goodies and get started, at home in Vermont, but loving Maine. Tom

  3. I haven’t bought my shredded wheat for this bread yet, but you could go to the store and from the “Nutrition information” panel on the box of large shredded wheat you should be able to find or calculate the weight of one biscuit, then compare the weight of a given number of mini biscuits from their box, and make the conversion.

    1. Fleischman’s makes fresh cake yeast. Some supermarkets carry it; you can usually find it in the refrigerated section near the Nestle cookie dough and Pillsbury pie crusts.

  4. I can’t wait to try this. Never knew this could be used for bread. This is one of my favorite cereals. Hard to find anymore. I had to order online, had to buy a case of 12 boxes of these! I don’t think I will be able to eat all of that before use by date. Now I can make bread! Thank you! Oh, as a child my mother would take these biscuits and put them under hot water until they were soaked, squeezed the excess water out and would toast them in an iron skillet with butter. Then she would sprinkle sugar over them. We ate them warm and sugary! No wonder I grew up with such a sweet tooth! Give that a try!

    1. Kimberly, As long as the little bags with the biscuits aren’t opened, the cereal should be good way past its sell-by-date. You could always donate unopened boxes that you don’t need to a food pantry, too. In fact that you be a good thing to do at this moment in time (Spring 2020.)

      1. I just put in Shredded Wheat and different places came up including Amazon but check your local Grocery Stores or Post’s to see where in your area it is sold

        1. In. Mich. they sell the box of post big biscuits at walmart $3.48..kroger $4.49..Mejer 3.79 I usually get 1 box every other month As a child mom would run warm / hot tap water over and just pour the water out serve them with a little milk and sugar I like them with a tiny bit of brown sugar or drizzled with chocolate syrup.

  5. I decided to make my very first loaf of bread and chose this recipe. It has turned out so well and tastes delicious. I had great difficulty getting the block yeast but instead used 2 and 1/4 tea spoons of fast acting yeast ( equivalent to 7 grams). It was a good gamble! I’ll be making this again!

  6. We have greatly enjoyed this recipe in my family for 4 generations–always a big hit that disappears in minutes!

  7. It would be a great help if someone could weigh “2 large biscuits” and post the result for those of us who don’t have access to the real thing.

    1. You buy Shredded Wheat Cereal you can get the large biscuits or the mini or spoon sizewheat Biscuits. I just looked up a box 18 Biscuits, weight is 15 ounces / 425 grams. Not sure if you are in the States or not. I am assuming it is in most Grocery Store Cereal Aisle. There are different Brands, I grew up with Post Brand. Hope this helps. Remember this is Shredded Wheat.

  8. I had a very similar recipe from years ago. The difference is 1 cup of hot milk and 1 cup of hot water, plus I use 1 packet of active dry yeast 2 1/4 tsp. The big difference and my worry/confusion my receipt called for baking it at 350 degrees for 30 minutes whereas your recipe calls for 325 degrees for 50 minutes. Now I’m not sure how to bake it! Eeek! Thanks for any advice.

    1. You can tell by the smell when its done. It reminds you. I’d go with 350’. Seems it’d brown up more.
I make oatmeal bread similarly but bake at 400’ x 20 min.

  9. This looks delicious! I’m going to try it. I would eat the Shredded Wheat Biscuits (large) with hot milk, butter & a little salt. Just butter your biscuits & pour the hot milk over it slowly. It’s really good when you don’t feel like oatmeal.

    1. You can also butter the biscuits, pour on milk snd microwave, heat to your good temperature. Saves the time warming the milk in the stove and possibly scorching if not attentive. Add sweetener, we use sugar, and good to go. My dad always made this and was so happy when he got the micro back in the 1970’s!!

  10. Like so many food products, large shredded wheat biscuits are smaller than what was available years ago…..but I still might give this recipe a go. Cake yeast USED to be the only form of yeast you could buy; now you have to hunt far and wide for it, dry yeast having taken over. Back to shredded wheat biscuits ~ my mum would split them lengthwise, spread some butter on them, place them on a baking sheet, then lightly toast them in the oven. Onto plates and topped with poached eggs………..YUMMM!

  11. I love these recipes but wish upon a star that you could offer the “gram equivalent.” This would be so helpful, especially with veggies…ie a cup of fresh basil. Please consider this!

  12. Has anyone tried Fried Shredded Wheat? My grandma would dip the biscuit into hot water and then put it into a hot frying pan with melted butter. She would fry it on both sides and then serve in a bowl with milk and brown sugar. It was my favorite breakfast.
