Light Wassail

Makes 10 to 12 servings.
Ingredients
1 gallon apple cider
2 cups cranberry juice
1/2 to 1 cup brown sugar, to taste
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 orange, thinly sliced
Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan or pot, adjusting sugar to taste, and simmer for 30 minutes. Serve in mugs, or pour into a punch bowl and serve warm in cups.
It’s wonderful with just the right amount of spices. Loved the addition of cranberry juice.

A great drink anytime. Especially during the cold dark winter months when one is tired of hot chocolate. The kids like it too and some liked it better than hot chocolate.
This is an awesome cold weather drink for the holidays, from Halloween right through to New Year’s! Makes the whole house smell cozy. It’s also perfectly suited for making in a crockpot. Instead of orange slices, try studding a small orange with 20-30 whole cloves and floating it in the wassail. Very good!

We substituted cinnamon sticks and whole cloves in a bag for the ground spices to make cleanup easier. Enjoying the tradition of warm wassail in a big bowl at our newly-revived tradition of a free-to-the-public holiday musical performance and sing-a-long at our historic Carnegie Library (in Carnegie, no less). We made it last year and handed out so many recipes, we decided we couldn’t disappoint people.
I make this in my 30 cup coffee pot. Just use whole spices and put them in the basket. This keeps it hot, and is easier to serve than using a ladle.
We made this for our Halloween party last year, everyone wanted the recipe. Very good and easy to make.
