New England’s travel postcards say it all, from white clapboard churches, red barns and covered bridges to coastal lighthouses, soaring mountains, and modern city skylines. While the six New England states each have their own distinct personality, their shared sense of landscape, history, and tradition make New England both hard to resist…and impossible to forget.
Nearly as big as the rest of the New England states put together, it’s no surprise that Maine, the state with the nickname “Vacationland,” has so much to offer. Known for its long coastline, northern Maine boasts the bustle of Bar Harbor, rocky islands, and the majestic mountains of Acadia National Park. Further south, picturesque coastal towns like Camden, Kennebunk, and York, offer charming inns, eclectic shops, art galleries, and some of the best lobster rolls in New England.
Massachusetts prides itself on its history with attractions like Boston’s Freedom Trail and the Minuteman National Park in Concord, but that’s only the beginning. Travel to the beautiful Berkshire Hills in the west for a picnic and show at Tanglewood (the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra) or learn about the famous witch trials in Salem. Love the coast? Travel to the beaches of Cape Cod for sun, sand, and a stroll along the Cape Cod National Seashore, or visit Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard for the quintessential New England island experience.
It might be famous for the towering Mount Washington and its surrounding White Mountains, but New Hampshire is also home to hundreds of lakes, and a coastline that makes up for its length (just 18 miles) by cramming every inch of it with visitor-friendly appeal. Stroll the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, take in the mountain charm of North Conway, listen for the loons on Squam Lake, or enjoy a coastal dose of history in hip downtown Portsmouth.
With its picture-perfect scenery of rolling hills, red barns, covered bridges, stone walls, and country roads Vermont seems made for Sunday drives and romantic getaways. Enjoy touring the quaint capital city of Montpelier, hit the slopes in Stowe, take in the bustle of trendy downtown Burlington, or plan a weekend escape to the picture-perfect village of Woodstock.
The smallest state in the country, Rhode Island is anything but when it comes to culture and appeal. With miles of coastline and beautiful countryside, “Little Rhody” offers vacation favorites like Block Island and the beaches of South County, plus the historic appeal of Newport, with its famous grand mansions. In Providence, home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, you’ll also find museums, fine dining, shopping, and historic architecture.
Connecticut, the most southern of the New England states, lies within reach of the metropolitan New York area, giving it both country charm and city style. Learn about New England’s maritime past in Mystic, kayak through the Thimble Islands off the southeast coast, tour the campus at Yale University in New Haven, take in the splendor of the rolling Litchfield Hills in the state’s northwest corner, or visit the historic Mark Twain house in Hartford.
No matter the state, the vibrant beauty of New England will keep you coming back for more.
