I so enjoyed the latest Yankee magazine that arrived in my mailbox. The whimsical and light hearted Becorns by David Bird brought so much joy on a stressful work day. Susie Spikol’s article with accompanied art by Lauren West made me feel like I was right there on a New Hampshire snowy trail! How precious are these gifts of nature to the heart of a New Englander!

Your two stories in the January/February issue brought such joy and peace to me. David Bird’s Becorns and Susie Spikol’s “Reading Lessons” are superb! Just what is needed in these turbulent times.

Having recently had a conversation with my son regarding his thrill in being with a young person experiencing city Christmas lights for the first time, I was really struck by Jenn Johnson’s “Look Again.” There is so much in the world that we just consider routine. Spending time with elders experiencing dementia helped me look through their eyes and see the beauty and the wonder of so many things that used to never reach my radar. Jenn so perfectly encourages us to slow down and take a second look. And her essay was an ideal heads up to the stories that followed in this issue. Thanks for the reminder and the great stories!

Snowy Lake Placid town and lake, dog sled team on snow, text reads "Adventure Ville" across the page.

I am a Yankee subscriber who was very surprised to open the latest issue and see a story on the Lake Placid/Adirondack region. Yankee‘s tagline is, “Celebrating New England since 1935.” As much as I would love for far northern New York state to be part of New England, it is not. Thus, this feature seems to be out of place.

At the very least, I think the article should have come with a brief explanation, like a sidebar, saying something like, “Although Lake Placid is not technically in New England, its proximity and similarity to parts of our region make it a popular destination for New Englanders.”

This isn’t really a complaint, as much as a call for clarification. Thanks for all your hard work. I will always love Yankee!
