The Maine Coast at Night | Photos

A beautiful collection of images celebrating the starry night sky of coastal Maine from photographer Jon Secord.

A lighthouse on a grassy hill illuminates the surroundings under a starry sky, with the Milky Way visible in the background.

Jon Secord is a landscape photographer based in Meredith, New Hampshire. The following photos were taken during a three-week trip to Maine and showcase the beauty of the night sky free from light pollution. The section of the Milky Way in these photos is the galactic core of our galaxy, which is most visible in the Northern Hemisphere during the summer months. Although the look of the Milky Way changes over the course of the year, its position in these photos is similar because they were all taken within a 10 day period around the same time each night. When is the best time to see the Milky Way? Optimal conditions occur about 2 hours after sunset when the moon is new. Although the Milky Way is clearly visible to the naked eye along much of the Maine coast, the camera will pick up significantly more detail over long exposures ranging from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. No significant editing is needed, other than contrast, white balance, minor color, and curve adjustments.

  1. Although commercially nice they look fake and photo shopped. The same sky is in each one and the stars even in Maine do not look like that.

  2. The photos have a “Kinkaid” look about them and look like those photos that have painted. Having said that, there is still some degree of talent required to achieve such a look and the result is beautiful though not realistic. Still, thanks for sharing these lovely images.

  3. There is a lot more to Maine than just the coast. Don’t like that you always seem partial to the coast and ignore the remainder of a beautiful state.
