  1. Ah yes indeed Tomhegan is a favorite of ours. Our first stay was in 1985 if my memory serves me correctly. We were lucky having met both Margery and Virgil. It was raining and I told my wife I had to go to the cabin next to us and talk with the lady that was feeding the deer by hand. Five hours later Gail came to get me. Margery was daughter of the family that built the cabins in 1910. The stories she told me were fascinating. We went back to Tomheghan every year until she passed away.
Each cabin was connected by a board walk, this boardwalk made the camps special. Sadly it was taking down in the 1990s when the camps were made into an association.
I want to tell you a story about Virgil and how I met him. Virgil was a quiet man in his 70 s. A big man who seemed to know everything about the outdoors. He kept his distance from others , not talking to others. I went fishing one day in a 12 foot aluminum boat. It was a windy day , with winds coming from the north. I docked the boat bow in and stern out towards wind. Well it wasn’t more than an hour later I saw Virgil holding his belly laughing.
The boat was full of water ! I learned to never dock stern out when winds were rough. Virgil and I became friends for life.
Sadly the walkway was taken down and we no longer visited the camps. We have great memories of Margery and Virgil, pictures still hanging on our walls. One picture is of my wife hand feeding the deer.
    Tomhegan is a gem.

  4.
