Seasons matter in New England, and the best harbinger is what’s available at your local farm stand. Farm stands come in many varieties and sizes, from apple orchards to year-round markets. The ones highlighted here are three- or four-season spots, with spring seedlings, summer veggies, fall fruits, and winter seafood. Most of what they sell is harvested daily from their own fields, although they may also offer products from other local farmers. Connecticut LoPresti Farm 5 Hollowell Rd. Preston 860-887-5292 Family farm offering vegetable and flower plants, sweet corn, pumpkins, and many other veggies, plus pick-your-own tomatoes in August and September. Open April through Christmas Eve. Maine Alewives Brook Farm 83 Old Ocean House Rd. Cape Elizabeth 207-799-7743 This Portland-area farm harvests (and sells) almost every kind of veggie that’ll grow in Maine. The folks here also sell lobsters, clams, and crabs. Open year-round. Massachusetts C.N. Smith Farm 325 South St. (off Route 106) East Bridgewater 508-378-2270 cnsmithfarminc.com Third-generation family business on 90+ acres. Farm visits encouraged; pick-your-own berries, apples, pumpkins, corn, beans, and peas. Open March to Thanksgiving. New Hampshire Edgewater Farm 99 River Rd. Plainfield 603-298-5764 www.edgewaterfarm.com A working farm since 1835. 50,000 square feet of greenhouses and a variety of crops. Open seasonally; close to White River Junction (VT) intersection of I-91 and I-89. Rhode Island Walker’s Roadside Stand 261 West Main Rd. (Route 77) Little Compton 401-635-4719 From heirloom tomatoes to the best corn in the state, Coll Walker’s farm has generations of devoted customers. Open June through late October. Vermont Ellie’s Farm Market 952 Darling Rd. (Route 12) West Berlin 802-485-7968 Great cider; huge selection of apples, including heirloom varieties; pumpkins and squashes; vegetables and seedlings. Open May 1 through the end of December.

  1. I think you should go to the Islands in Vermont for the best Vermont Apples. I was there for the fall festival last year and had the best time with my daughter and grandchildren!!!

  5. carpenters farm in matunuck rhode island would be a great addition to add to your list of great farm stands, we are a 5th generation family farm. famously known for growing delicious sweet corn, free range beef, pork, and turkey. along with any vegetable we are able to grow in this area, we are located in a very popular are in matunuck rhode island with beautiful sights to see everywhere. we also sell homemade baked goods and jarred items such as pies, breads, cookies, etc. and jams, jellies, and pickles. come take a free hayride to our pumpkin patch in the fall, or just come feed the goats and cows and turkeys, we hope to see you down our way soon, and believe me you wont want to leave.
