“When an 85-pound mammal licks your tears away, then tries to sit on your lap, it’s hard to feel sad.”

From Catch of the Day by Kristan Higgins (born May 1, 1965, in New Haven, Connecticut). As National Dog Day comes bounding in on August 26, we salute this Nutmeg State author whose best-selling romance novels usually include an affectionate nod to our four-legged friends. Higgins releases her 20th novel, Life and Other Inconveniences, on August 6; she lives in Durham with her family and their two adopted dogs (and, OK, one cat).
