Photo Credit : Heath RobbinsSure, it’s easy enough to pick up a batch of delicious doughnuts from a bakery, but there’s just something satisfying about creating the tasty baked good from scratch — smelling the delightful aroma, biting into a doughnut while it’s still warm, and sharing what you’ve made with friends and family. Doughnuts come in all flavors and varieties, from plain to glazed to dripping with chocolate frosting. Below are some of our favorite doughnut recipes, including classic New England flavors such as the Vermont apple cider doughnut and the Maine potato doughnut.
This recipe for Maine potato doughnuts first ran in 1937, and when we tested them, we were pleased to discover they’ve stood the test of time.
It’s a cider maker’s tradition to use some of the freshly pressed juice to make lightly tangy, apple-scented doughnuts like these. The cider adds more than flavor, though; its acidity makes the doughnuts more tender.

The very soft dough in this recipe makes terrific doughnuts, though the first batch or two may fall somewhat short of perfection. (Doughnut making is a slowly learned art, but even “failures” are usually much tastier than store-bought.) The dough must be refrigerated overnight, so plan accordingly.
