In 1998, two years after Yankee launched the first iteration of its website, NewEngland.com, the marketing team celebrated the new digital endeavor as well as our annual Travel Guide to New England by commissioning a series of Yankee branded View-Master stereoscopes and film reels. The images offered up a beautiful tour of the region: lush foliage, whitecapped river rapids, quiet beaches, and high peaks.“Yankee Celebrates Picture Perfect New England” the main frame said. True indeed.
And who were the lucky recipients of these retro toys? Prospective advertisers, mainly. How successful the campaign was, or even how many View-Masters we made, has been lost to history. What is known is that the ones that remain around the office are a huge hit. Ever since the edit team rediscovered these old gems we haven’t been able to stop using them. That orange lever practically begs to be cranked. Again and again and again. Some things never go out of fashion.
