dear yankeeemail-iconAs a long-time Yankee subscriber and a life-long New Englander (MA now NH), I take umbrage with the article in the latest Yankee that is showcasing things to do in New England and the author covering the “13 miles of the NH Seacoast” (May/June; p. 56). I nearly choked because it is a well-known fact that NH has an 18-mile coastline—see Wikipedia: New Hampshire has the shortest ocean coastline of any state in the United States, approximately 18 miles (29 km) long. What gives, Yankee—where did those very important and beautiful 5 miles go?

You confusion is justifiable. Both figures are technically correct. New Hampshire’s mainland shoreline is 13 miles; it bumps up to 18 if you include the Isles of Shoals, a group of islands off Rye shore. –Eds.

Scents & Sensibilities

email-iconI grew up in the quaint village of Talcottville, Connecticut, and for the past 48 years I have lived in Michigan. All of those years I’ve looked forward to and enjoyed every issue of my Yankee Magazine with great pleasure. One thing I can’t bring back is the unique smell of New England; the summertime salt water and air, the dried leaves of fall, the hot chocolate, peppermint, and balsam pine of winter and the sweet smell of lilacs and wet pine needles in the springtime. Could you make a “peel back” page with some of those scents inside? All of us “displaced” Yankees would love that.

email-iconI’ve been gone from New England for nearly 40 years, but Yankee keeps me home. Born in Nantasket Beach, we spent summer vacations in New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. I read every word, look at every picture, and enjoy every ad. Please keep up the good work!

For the Love of Flo’s

email-iconI just finished reading the story on Flo’s Hot Dogs, which I have been to many times. Several years ago I took some friends of mine. When Flo took our order she asked my friend, Bill, how many he’d like. “Three,” he said. I said the same. When it came time for her to order, Bill’s wife said, “One.” Flo then looked at her and said, “What the heck? You on a diet?” Bill and I could not stop laughing. Great memories. And Flo’s still has the best dog in New England.
