Who Are the Mayflower Descendants?
Could you be one of the nation’s estimated 35 million Mayflower descendants? Today there are more resources than ever before to help you make the connection.
The arrival of the Mayflower in 1620 is one of the signature events in U.S. history. 35 million people can trace their ancestry back to the Mayflower, and it has never been easier to find out if you are among them.

Ancestry. Each of these famous folks had a distant forebear who was a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620. Think you might have one, too? There are plenty of tools to help determine if you might be one of the nation’s many Mayflower descendants.
Are You a Mayflower Descendant? | Mayflower Families
The Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England, in September 1620 with approximately 130 people on board: 102 passengers, the rest crew. Of the passengers, five died before ever coming ashore in America, and 45 more failed to survive their first New England winter. Of the surviving passengers, only 37 are known to have descendants. Could one of them be a distant relative of yours? By reviewing the Mayflower passenger list, descendants can often get their first clue.
All the known Mayflower descendants alive today can trace their lineage to one or more of 22 male passengers:
- John Alden
- Isaac Allerton
- John Billington
- William Bradford
- William Brewster
- Peter Browne
- James Chilton
- Francis Cooke
- Edward Doty
- Francis Eaton
- Edward Fuller
- Samuel Fuller
- Stephen Hopkins
- John Howland
- Degory Priest
- Thomas Rogers
- Henry Samson
- George Soule
- Myles Standish
- Richard Warren
- William White
- Edward Winslow
Being of Mayflower descent is certainly a badge of honor in New England, where we value deep roots. But the ranks of descendants have swelled enormously over many generations. How many Mayflower descendants are there? Most estimates place the number of descendants alive today at around 35 million. By way of comparison, the combined population of the six New England states is just shy of 15 million. The population of the entire United States is a bit more than 327 million.

How to Begin
We’ll start with the obvious: If you share a surname with any of the Mayflower 22, focus on that line of your family tree and see if you can work backward toward a connection. However, the vast majority of descendants do not share a name with anyone on the list, since only a direct paternal line would have perpetuated the name. If you don’t have a direct name connection, start with a line that you suspect has deep New England roots, and see how far you can take it. That’s what I did.
My Descendant Moment
My mother was something of a genealogy nut, so I was gifted with a head start on tracing my family lines. On my father’s side in particular, my mom had traced my lineage back 14 generations. My great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather John Bill (the “s” was added in the 1750s, it seems) died in Boston in 1638. There is no record of his passage to America, but his son, Thomas Bill, was born in England in 1618 and died in Boston in 1696. It would seem to make some sense, then, that John and family set sail for Massachusetts sometime between 1618 and 1638. Thomas, by the way, had a wife named Abigail and a son named Samuel.
That gave me a pretty tight window to research, so I dug into an online database (more on those in a moment) and was quickly rewarded. There they were, in the lineage of Mayflower passenger John Alden: Thomas Bill and his wife, Abigail, and even little Sam.
But something didn’t add up. Though the dates were close, they weren’t quite what my mom had in her family tree. And this Tom and Abby and Sam lived in New London, Connecticut, not Boston. I checked and double-checked both my records and theirs. As unlikely as it seemed, John Alden’s Samuel Bill, son of Thomas and Abigail, was not the same person as my Samuel Bill, son of Thomas and Abigail.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that I won’t find another connection to the Pilgrims who made the great voyage of 1620. But that potential victory will require plenty more research.
Mayflower Descendant Search Tools
It would be great if there were a free online search engine or Mayflower descendants database that could easily tell you if your lineage leads back to the Mayflower. (But that would also take all the fun out of the hunt.) While that immediate-answer machine doesn’t yet exist, there are plenty of resources available to help you close the gap between you and your distant relatives.
For my own search, I chose the American Ancestors site from the New England Historical Genealogical Society. There are some free resources on the site, but to access the real meat of the collection, membership is required. I signed up for a three-month membership for $35 and was quickly overwhelmed (in a good way) by the treasure trove of census records, maps, vital records, property records, journals and newspapers, immigration records, and journals that awaited me. One entire section of the site is devoted specifically to Mayflower genealogies.
There are other sites with impressive combinations of free and paid resources, as well. Caleb Johnson’s MayflowerHistory.com is a great free starting point, with links to multiple resources.
If you prefer a more old-fashioned approach, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants has published a Mayflower Families Through Five Generations book series (more than two dozen volumes strong at this point), which are fun to browse. The listings are authoritative and organized by surname, which can be a great help or a huge limitation, depending on what information you have already assembled.
After five generations, however, the strength of the trail left behind can vary greatly depending on where your ancestors lived and how prominent they were in their communities. For those who remained in New England, vital records compilations by state are available in print or on microfilm that should allow you to gradually cross-reference your way to a connected family tree. Massachusetts has been registering vital records officially since 1841. Rhode Island started in 1853, Vermont in 1857, New Hampshire in 1866, Maine in 1892, and Connecticut in 1897. Town histories and church records are terrific sources as well, and in many cases they have been digitized for easy searching.
Another resource not to be overlooked (but also not to be trusted without verification) are user-posted genealogies on free sites such as RootsWeb or Ancestral Findings. Sometimes a simple Google search of an ancestor’s name and “Mayflower” is all it takes to connect you to another researcher’s efforts.
A Fun Shortcut
If you’re lucky, there may be another way to make a quick connection all the way back to the Mayflower. Many of us grew up hearing a family story about how Ulysses S. Grant or Laura Ingalls Wilder or some other famous person is a distant relative. Grant and Wilder were both Mayflower descendants, so if your lineage connects to theirs, you’re in, too.
There are plenty of lists available online, but here are some famous Mayflower descendants to get you started: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Helen Keller, Robert Frost, Lizzie Borden, Sarah Palin, Ernest Hemingway, General George S. Patton, Barbara Bush, Julia Child, Jesse James, Humphrey Bogart, Jane Fonda, Commodore Matthew Perry, Orville and Wilbur Wright, Alan Shepard, Bette Davis, Grandma Moses, and John Hinckley Jr.
No matter which approach you take, and no matter whether you succeed in making a Mayflower connection, you will almost certainly come away from your search with a renewed connection to your past, and a story or two that is uniquely your own. Who could resist that?

The story in our family (Hill) is that an ancestor was a carpenter on the Mayflower. Wish there were a way to trace that.
There is a way to find out. Join familysearch.org, which is free. Start filling out your family tree. After several generations, they will provide you with hints and join you with other family trees to help fill out your tree. Then go to the Mayflower Passenger List at: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Mayflower_Passenger_List They have a listing of the people on the Mayflower that names the relatives who can belong to the Mayflower Society. On the far right of your ancestors name is a “Family Tree ID.” This will take you to your ancestors personal page and on the right is a link to see if you are a relative. I found out when I went to RootsTech, which is a yearly convention in Feb. The Mayflower group was there and I was allowed to submit a preliminary list of who my ancestors were back to John Howland and William Brewster. After a few weeks I got a letter that they were my relatives and I would need to continue from a proven point forward to me with all the necessary documentation. RootsTech is having a virtual conference this year, but I don’t know if the Mayflower group will be there or if you can do the same thing I did.
I’m a Hill descendant as well and have traced my ancestry through the Hurd line to Francis Eaton, the Mayflower ship’s carpenter, and his son Samuel.
Was very nice reading about the Mayflower, I have gone to Plymouth Rock many times even went on the Mayflower, so it was nice to read about it. Thank You
Probably the carpenter you are referencing is John Alden…the most famous of all the MF people. He married Priscilla Mullins, who was also aboard the MF with her parents and a brother..They have millions of descendants..the most of any other Mayflower passengers..
John Alden who m. Priscilla Mullins was a carpenter. They have the most descendants of any MF passenger..they had about 10 children!
I’m a descendant!
My grandma and a cousin did a bunch of research. I was given the information. They traced our family back to John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. Their daughter Elizabeth is my lineage. I believe she married William Pabodie. I find this all so cool and distant cousins of famous people.
Marcia…there are many books regarding Mayflower passengers and their kin…Nathaniel Philbrick wrote “Mayflower”..get it from library or purchase it..another is Saints and Strangers by George Willison lots of info there. Many more out there as well.
Marcia..go to 23andme, or Ancestry.com(online)…and follow the directions; send them a sample of spit; send it back with $ and in about 2 mos. they’ll send you your ancestors and dates. Fascinating.. I did both of them; 23andme also gives you understanding of your health and diseases that run in your family.
Your list of “22 male passengers” is incomplete. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants lists fifty one Mayflower passengers known to have descendants living today. I descend from 11 of them. The GSMD also accepts lineages from the women and children (including girls) who were passengers. For more information see the GSMD website http://www.themayflowersociety.org
I can claim directly decended from 28 Pilgrims!
I would like to connect with any decendents of Edward Doty
I am related to Edward Doty!
Recently learned Edward Doty my 8th Great Grandfather on father’s side of family!
Descendant of Doty here in Missouri.
Descendant here in MO.
My Lacey is a brickwall and lived in Missouri. I cannot find his parents. It as been suggested that I am the 2nd cousin twelve times removed to James Chilton and I have a James Doty.
I am a direct decendent of Edward Doty. And I believe his daughter Desire married Myles Standish’s son Alexander.
I am related to Anna Doty (1784-1828) and Charles Cromwell Addington. If Edward is related to Anna Doty (1784-1828) I would love to hear from you.
I am related to Edward Doty.
Even as a list of male passesngers with living descendants, this list is not complete. You left out Moses Fletcher.
Just read your story about Moses Fletcher and responded to you on Facebook Messenger. Looking forward to a discussion! My family tree is in the discovery stage, but it appears that I my family is connected to Mayflower passengers Thomas & Joseph Rogers and their Leiden, Holland family, the White Family, Edward & Elizabeth Winslow, the Chilton Family, whose daughter Mary Chilton, married John Winslow (Sailed on second ship “Fortune”), who was the Brother of Edward Winslow II. Enjoying the historical research.
Years ago I met a Chilton relative who was attending East Tennessee State and had numerous Black Belts in karate! Think his first name was Bruce. And I am a descendent of Peregrine White! We MF dez seem to turn up everywhere. But never knew till this article that we number in the millions!
Constance Hopkins is my 10th great-grandmother who was 14 years old on the Mayflower voyage from Plymouth u.k with her father Stephen , constances’s step-mother who also gave birth onboard the Mayflower to a son named Oceanus . Along with constance’s brother Giles, and half sister Damaris , can anybody tell me the maiden last name of stephen Hopkins wife Elizabeth . I have traced my tree all way back to Constance Hopkins would love any info about what happened to them all after arriving in cape cod I know Constance went on to have 10 or 12 children . I am British and I live in Hampshire on the south coast of England and through ancestry.com have found many American DNA matches and descendants that I’m researching.
If my research is correct, I believe Elizabeth’s last name is Fisher. Born 1595, died 1639.
Yes, Stephen’s 2nd wife’s name was Elizabeth Fisher. I am a descendant of Stephen Hopkins, daughter Constance, her son John Snow. I am fascinated at how much information can be found online.
Hi. It’s no longer really acceptable, to simply derive Mayflower lineage from the adult men who signed the Compact. Several women on the Mayflower married men who arrived on later ships or married men who were just too young to sign the Compact. In addition, very few people are descended from just one Mayflower passenger. Offhand I can name seven or eight my sisters and I are proud to descend from but a lot of people have a dozen or more.
True. There were women aboard the Mayflower, but most were with a male family member. I do seem to recall at least one woman was with an unrelated family. She was an employee of that family. I do not remember her name or that families name at the moment.
Agreee. Husband is related to the Howlands. Of course Howland married Tilley who crossed over on the Mayflower (her parents died).
Passengers John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley were married in 1623 and had ten children. John Alden and Priscilla Mullins had seven children. [See the GSMD Silver books for genealogical information on these families]
Husband is descended from Howland and Tilley. This summer we visited the Howland home in Plymouth. What are the GSMD Silver books?
Howland and Tilley are my 8x grandparents.
Received information about being related to John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley through Elizabeth Howland. Hannah Dickinson and Issac Gibbs Jr. Sarah Gibbs then Gabriel Hutching. Does anyone have a connection to these people.
Last year I learned that on my mothers side I am related to these two also. Had known my father’s side was traced back to William Bassett who was on the Fortune. Would love to learn more of these families.
The Silver Books are the nicknames for books actually entitled “Mayflower Families through the Five Generations” then it goes on to save the volume number and who the book is about and whether it is Part 1, 2, etc. They can be found at many libraries that have genealogical sections. They can also be purchased at: themayflowersociety.org, americanancestors.org, Amazon.com and other sites.
William Mullins was left off the list and was a Compact signer. Big mistake to leave him out!
Hello I’m a decendant of Peregrine White. Where are my White Family decendant’s? Thanks ????
Hey there cousin! I’m descended of him through Peregrine!
I am too! Through Peregrine White!
Hi Meara, I’m descended from Peregrine too! Seems there are a lot of us! We should have a reunion in Plimouth someday! peregrine.potter@gmail.com
I’m also a decendant of Peregrine White.
I am too!! I descend from him as well as John Alden! Hello cousins!!

White. Look forward to learning more about these connections!
Hello Robyn, I am a descendant of Peregrine also. peregrine.potter@gmail.com
I just found out William White was my 11th great grandfather and Peregrine is my 10th great grandfather
Hi Kathryn, Me too! Seems there are a lot of us! We should have a reunion in Plimouth someday! peregrine.potter@gmail.com
You left out my ancestor, Richard More. He was one of the children on the Mayflower and went on to have 6 children.
You left my ancestor Richard More. He didn’t have a choice of weather he want to sail on the Mayflower or not. But he was definitely on it, as were his siblings who all died.
I too am descended from R More. A most colorful man!
Descendent of Isi
Name also Allerton
Also part American Indian.
Is Priest in NewHaven 1630-1640s related,& was there an Indian bride or Horton? What date was the part Indian?
You cant please all 35 million! Isn’t your list the ones who sign the Mayflower compact? Of course there were others. Priest my 9th grandfather. Allerton and wife my 9th uncle-aunt . Their 3 children 10th cousins. Great article. Thanks
I’m doing my lineage and do far have 3 Mayflower ancestors
I’d like to connect to any Richard More descendants on here!
I’m a descendent of William & Mary Brewster
With the help of a friend who is into genealogy, my brother has found out we are direct descendants of William Brewster also. We are from Maine and have the research (births, marriages, deaths) that was done. The document I saw was from Ancestry that showed the family tree. It is very interesting. A name that I recall my mother used when she was searching a Maine cemetery was Tedford. Was fun and interesting!
I am a descendant of William White. My grandmother (1912-2012) was a member of the Mayflower Association. This society requires documentation proving your linage in order to belong. Knowing she had this documentation, I plan on keeping becoming a member and passing it down to future blood line.
Hello Julia, I am a direct descendant of Peregrine White, son of William and his wife, Mistress Susanna White. peregrine.potter@gmail.com
We are also direct descendants to William White, through his son Resolve! My Uncle has documentation of our lineage and it was certified. There are so many descendants it’s fascinating!
Hi cousin. I am also a direct descendant from William White through his son Resolve. I am proud to be a member of the Mayflower Society.
I am 14th direct generation from John and Priscilla (Mullins) Alden. Would love to connect with any Aldens in Florida.
While it was never mentioned while I was growing up that we were Mayflower descendants, after my parents’ death, I found a genealogy list showing that we are. I set out to confirm the information, and found out it was true. My family is descendants of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. I’ve never taken the effort to join the Mayflower Society, but did compile an album of our family’s history including photos and newspaper clippings found after my parents’ deaths. My mother always described us as “Swamp Yankees”. Although I live in San Diego, I’m a New Englander at heart and look forward to news from Yankee magazine.
I also am a descendant of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. My great grandfather and great grandmother, Bullock and Comstock were descendants of a different one of their 10 children. I sent in the paperwork but have not heard back. Our families come from MA. and R.I. My husband and I brought our family to Atlanta.
I am also a descendant of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley!
Definitely a descendant here, traced back to two on the Mayflower. My mother and her brother (Osborne), both joined the society.
Bradford and Hinckley lines, anyone related to these families?
I just found this on Family Search. She was born in 1704 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. It said that she was a Mayflower descendant, but it didn’t list who from.
Re: Bradford line, my great grandmother was a Bradford. When I followed the leafs on Ancestry.com, it took me to John Bradford 1704-1735 who married Rebecca Pace, who was the 3rd Great Grandaughter of Richard Pace from Jamestown, VA. I initially saw that her lineage went back to the Mayflower, but my research so far leads me to Jamestown, VA. I am working on their profiles now. I look forward to hearing from you.
Diane Joerger
Nice to find some more “Leads” on the trail! Thanks to all for contributing!
My ancestor, Robert Cushman, chartered the Mayflower, and came over himself on the next boat, the Fortune.
I can trace to the 2nd and 3rd ships… The Fortune and The Anne
Me, too! It’s my understanding that those who came on the Anne were given an acre of land for having come to the new world. Pretty slick, huh?
I’m not a descendant but John Clarke, 1st mate and pilot of The Mayflower is my 10th great-grandfather.
My wife and therefore my children are descendants of both John and Priscilla Alden and John and Elizabeth Tilley. Both John Alden and John Howland were “strangers” not members of the puritan religion, but hired as craftsmen for the colony. Both signed the Mayflower Compact. Priscilla Mullins and Elizabeth Tilley their wives were both orphaned the first winter in Plymouth.
I am a direct descendant of John Alden as well!
i’m a direct descendant of Elizabeth Tiley, Joan Hurst, Elizabeth Howland????
I am a 9th Great Granddaughter of Stephen Hopkins and 8th Great Granddaughter of Constance Hopkins (Mayflower passenger’s) who married Nicholas Snow (Ship Anne passenger in 1623). I just found out through a Cousin DNA match. My Great-Great Grandmother was Caroline Snow-Wilson. I hope to find documentation to join the Mayflower Society. Strange thing is, I live in Northern Nevada and started working for a company in Massachusetts Aug. 2019 and will be flying there 3 times a year. I am definitely going to visit the area to see what I can find on my family.
Just found out i’m (potentially) a distant granddaughter of Constance and Stephen too! If this is true, I’m excited!!
I’m related to Steven Hopkins, also. His wife’s name was Mary Kent. Are you aware Hopkins was the Stefano character in Tempest by Shakespeare? The story is based on a true story of their leaking ship forced to land in Bermuda.
I just found out that Stephen Hopkins is my 10x great grandfather! I just started looking for the connection, Sarah Snow is in the mix.
I am descended from 3 males on the Mayflower, a father and son, and another man. The names slip my memory at the moment. I think the 2 are Warren if I recollect? When I get home, I’ll have to look at records again. My father, Miles Barnes, worked on our genealogy for 50 yrs as a hobby. I can be in the DAR if I wish and Mayflower Society. Have never gotten around to it. He traced us back 40+ generations on his side. My mother is a newbie. Her parents came from Germany in the early 1920’s.
I, too, am descended from a father and son Mayflower passengers….Francis and John Cooke (my 9th and 10th great-grandfathers), as well as Richard Warren (my 10th great-grandfather) whose daughter Sarah married John Cooke. This is a new discovery for me as I thought most of my ancestors originated in New York and New Brunswick.
As of yesterday, I have found out that I too, have John Cooke in my heritage. Looking forward to doing more research.
Karen – I found 7 generations of Francis Cooke in Nova Scotia, Canada and Massachusetts, USA, and an still trying to link to the MF Francis Cooke.
I am also a descendent of Francis and John Cooke…they are also my 10th and 9th great grandfather
Francis Cooke was my 16th cousin. I live in New Zealand.
Francis Cooke and I share the same 27th great-grandfather Alan fitz flaad born 1070 Dol-de-Bretagne, France died 1114 Shropshire, England. I have our family tree going back several more generations.
I have direct lineal heritage to Robert Treat (9th GGF), a founder, Lt Governor & Governor to Milford Connecticut. His Grandson Rev, Thomas Paines Son Robert Treat Paine (signor on DOI 2nd cousin 8x removed). Mary Paine (Robert sister) is as close as i can get and shows she is connected to a Snow *married name? and/or a Knowles. I cannot locate ANY of these names. Any suggestions?
Relation to Kennedy’s and FitzGeralds
I’m descended directly from Edward Doty . I found this out from my cousin two years ago. I’m hoping next year we can have the public festivities celebrating the voyage. The revelation was a true surprise to me .

Direct descendant of Edward Doty. Seeking more information.
MO? Is that Missouri?
I am also a descendant of Edward Doty, in WI.
Just found out I am a descendant of Edward Doty. He’s my 10th great grandfather.
I am descended from Francis Cooke and Thomas Rogers…coming down through Abigail Rogers Richmond. Anyone else in line?
I am directly descended from both Thomas and his son Joseph Rogers who sailed on the Mayflower. Both of them were initially aboard the Speedwell and when it was decided she was too leaky to make the voyage they joined the other separatists aboard the Mayflower.
I am directly descended from Thomas and Joseph. Joseph is my 9th grandfather (Thomas my 10th).
Regards,
Paul Rogers
I descend directly from both Thomas Rogers and his son Joseph both of whom were on the Speedwell before it was decided she was too leaky to make the voyage. They both joined the other separatists on board the Mayflower. Thomas signed the Mayflower compact and died during the first winter at Cape Cod.
yes decendant of Francis Cooke and Richard Warren
Descended from Francis Cooke and his daughter Jane Cooke
I too am a descendant of Thomas Rogers
I am also related to Thomas Rogers -10 th great grandfather:)
I have recently traced through various sources such as Ancestry and Family Search to John Billington and family. John would be my 9G grandfather. After he had been in Plymouth plantation 10 years, he was hanged for killing a man. His 14-year old younger son Francis almost blew up the Mayflower but later settled down, married and had 8 children.
I have 4 Mayflower connections…john howland and Stephen Hopkins and John alden and myles standish. I’ve been researching g for 2 years now. Ancestry.com is an invaluable tool but I also go to other sites as well. Have visited Plymouth and want to make a return trip to all the burial sites in Massachusetts.
I am a direct descendant of John Alden as well as Peregrine White (both of my parents trace back directly).
I too am a descendant of Peregrine White. Many in my family took White as a middle name.
Hello Jennifer, I am a direct descendant of Peregrine White too! Peregrine.potter@gmail.com
Hello Frank. Just found out that my grandmother is a direct descendant of John through Francis. Small world, isn’t it.
I just found out that William Brewster is my 10 x great grandfather. It seems there are a lot of us! My line comes down through his daughter, Patience. This then goes through her daughter, Mercy, and then down through the freeman’s and Cobbs. Many of the Cobbs in this line migrated south, ultimately ending in Georgia and Florida, which is where I am originally from. I was shocked to find this relation
I have been told by a relative that has done the research that I am also a descendant of John Billington. The only confirmation I have seen is the lineage he had shared. So interesting if this is true. McCallum is the family name.
Mayflower Pilgrim ancestor is Stephen Hopkins
I am related to Francis Eaton and George Soule they are both my 10th great grandfathers. George was an indentured servant. They both were signers of the Mayflower Compact as well.
I am a descendant of John Alden. We’ve had a lineage going for a few generations now, passing it on. It took a lot of research but we eventually found the exact lineage. John Alden is my 12th generation grandfather on my dad’s side. What’s cool is I once met another very distant relative while visiting the founding fathers stone. He knew he was related to John Alden but wasn’t sure of the lineage. All this is cool, but I hope one day I can trace the lineage back even further.
Hello John,
I just found out that I am also a descendent of John Alden. He is my 11th great grandfather on my dads side.
I very much need strong help with a document or newspaper or church record, Baptist church, proving that my great-great grandmother, born Matilda Pineo (Mrs. Peter Crandall Weaver) was born 17 April 1822 in Cornwallis, Kings Co., Nova Scotia, Canada, was a daughter of John Pineo (1785-1871) and John’s wife, Sarah Ells Pineo (1790-1874) in Cornwallis. My Matilda died in 1892, Cornwallis. I have seen tons of references, but no document! Please help me, or call me, Mrs. Jack Simon, at 256-457-3406 and/or leave a message! Ever so greatful!
A great place for Alden Descendants www, alden, org
Both of my father’s parents descend directly from Stephen Hopkins. My grandmother through his son from his first marriage, and his father through his daughter from his second marriage. My grandparents are 8th cousins, once removed to each other.
Just discovered that Stephen Hopkins is my 11th great-grandfather. I just recently contacted the Mayflower Society to officially verify.
My decendant is William Bradford from some of the stuff I got in my family tree.
I recently learned that William Bradford was my 10x great grandfather. After receiving the results of a DNA test, my aunt shared her DNA results and a family tree linking us to Bradford. I have since become a history enthusiast.
He is also my 10 times great grandfather.
Hi Dawn I just found out thatI too am a descendent of William Bradford
William Bradford
A cousin of mine just let me know that i am a descendant of William Bradford. He would be my 9th great grandfather. This is really exciting to know my family roots had such a great impact on America. He did alot while he was alive to. A great history lesson that i have shared with my children. You can find more info on him in Findagrave.com .
I’m a descendant of Isaac Allerton. Shame he absconded with the other passengers’ money while dealing with contracts back in England.
I wouldn’t be so quick to judge people. The strictly conservative Pilgrims were not a fan of his more liberal dealings with contracts. That doesn’t make him a thief. It means their minds were not open to learning something new. He did right by the colony.
i’m a descendant of William Brewster, John Alden, and Priscilla Mullins. a genealogist helped trace the lines. It’s fun learning the lineage.
Lovely site! Glad to have found it just before Thanksgiving too!
Did you know the ‘Mayflower’ was named after the Glastonbury Thorn in Glastonbury, England? The Glastonbury Thorn grew from Joseph of Arimathea’s staff he thrust into the ground when he arrived after laying Jesus to rest in his tomb. Joseph was Jesus’ uncle. What’s fascinating is Joseph of Arimathea brought Christianity to England and the Mayflower, named after the Thorn Tree, brought Christianity to America. I am a descendant if William Brewster and Steven Hopkins. (Joseph was very wealthy man in the Tin business in England.)
Say, I am also a descendent of both Stephen Hopkins and William Brewster. I assume you are a descendent of Sylvanus Hopkins, who was the great great grandson of one and 3xgreat grandson of the other.
Thank you for that fascinating connection of the Mayflower to the Glastonbury Thorn tree. I’ve always been interested in the story of Joseph of Arimathea in England. There’s a legend that he brought his teenage nephew, Jesus, with him to England. They were there for the tin from the Cornwall tin mines, which date back to the Neolithic. I’m not a Mayflower descendant, but grew up in Massachusetts surrounded by them; I appreciate the historic connection.
My stepdad’s middle name is Hopkins, descended from Stephen on his paternal grandmother’s side. Dad’s family have been members of the Mayflower Society for generations. Now retired, he does a lot of a ancestry research, building on work done by an earlier family historian.
Good to see Yankee feature something that is central to the identity of many, many old New England (especially Massachusetts) families.
My family is descendants of William White, from his son Resolve. My Uncle traced it back and was able to have it certified. History just amazes me!
Helpful genealogy website – https://www.wikitree.com
If my calculations and information is correct, I and my siblings descend from John & Priscilla on my father’s side
I may be related and would be interested in tracing the line further. I am currently a member of colonial dames 17th century
Your help appreciated
We are related. John and Percilla are my 11 great grand parents. Their first daughter Elizabeth is my 10 great grandmother. I found this out today and it’s really cool.
My 9th great grand parents were Alexander Standish and Sarah Mullens, children of Myles Standish, John Alden and Pricilla Mullens. The cast of “The Courtship of Myles Standish” by Longfellow.
Seems like it’s pretty common to be descended from multiple MF passengers-? So far, I’ve identified 5 direct MF ancestors (George Soule, John Alden, Priscilla Mullins, Myles Standish, and Richard Warren), and I’m sill working on it. Is there a leader-board of most MF ancestors? (I know I’m not close, but I’m curious)
I never knew my extended family, and grew up on the West Coast, so never thought much about my New England ancestors. I got a crazy hair and just worked all this out, what a weird week to make these connections- Pilgrims!
Even 1% of the U.S. population is about 35,000,000 million Americans. There’s a lot of us, but not compared to the overall population.
Interesting. Found out today I am the 1st Cousin 11 times removed of William Mullins. I traced this through the bother of William’s wife, Joane. She was a Bridger before she married. My blood line goes through them.
Correction. I traced through Joane’s mother and father who were Bridger’s.
William & Susana White were my 12th great grandparents. Resolved White and Judith Vassal were my 11th great grandparents. It seems like from recent research her family built and owned the Mayflower. This is all new for me so excuse me if that is inaccurate. Interesting the LDS family search has my family at 14 ancestors direct and indirect on the Mayflower.
I also show William White as my ancestor, through Resolved. I have not found anything that listed information about building the Mayflower. I understood the passengers pooled money to buy the Speedwell, then the Mayflower. Can you direct me to the building information? Thanks,
I am 9x from Resolved White through my maternal grandmother. Live in Miami. arthur.carson@gmail.com
William White is my 4x great-grandfather!
Also my great grandfather, on peregrines side anyway, even kept the name.. cousins much lol
Susanna and William white are my 10th gg parents. Resolved and Judith vassell my 9th. Samuel white and Rebecca green 8th, Penelope white and Peter crapo 7th, and so on and on
Anyone a descendant of Peter Browne?
He is a distant cousin.
I have been successful in finding a connection to Peter Brown via Snow, Tolman, Gilles. It indicates he is my 9th Great Grandfather.
I have been successful in finding a connection to Peter Browne via my mothers side (Brown) paternal side of the family in Scituate, MA
Would you know if Mary Hopkins married to Samuel Hickocks and d/o John Hopkins is a Mayflower descendant of Stephen Hopkins? Thank you!
I want to know how unique it is to be related to 11 passengers from 6 families plus Robert Cushman who planned the voyage.
What is the most amount of passengers on person has been related to?
I am related to
Edward Doty
Francis Eaton
Richard Warren
James Chilton
Chilton’s wife name unknown
William White
Susanna White
Resolved White
Isaac Allerton
Mary (Norris) Allerton
Mary Allerton
Maybe that is a lot…not sure.
Best part is I am not done yet.
I’m related to a good chunk of those people, we’re probably cousins.
I seem to have a whole boatload full as some of my ancestors were from Devon and Somerset England and were very religous. mainly Puritan, I have cousins from the Hopkins, Rogers, Brewsters , White , Alltertons, Treats, Chews and about half a dozen other, None of them are direct descendants but cousins, I even have Captain Ralph Margery who is a direct decendant and was the right hand man of Oliver Cromwell . Him and my distant grandmother were excomunicated from the church and were strict Puritans but didnt immigrate to the New World and died in England.
Well hey cousin! That is AMAZING!! Keep going! That’s my question too! My mind has been blown by what I’ve found in the last year, and how my family largely did not know is beyond me.
Me too. It would appear my lines go back to:
James Chilton
Thomas Rogers
Stephen Hopkins and Constance, my GGGM
William Mullins – Priscilla his daughter only survivor from the Mullins family after the 1st winter, as I understand;
John Alden. John Alden also went on to be accused of Witchcraft in the Salem Witch delusions in 1692, but he fled, which was a smart move. Good luck, and hope to somehow find how you’ve progressed. I think I’ve hit the end of my lines insofar as the Mayflower/early settlers. Be well!
Recently discovered my 8th Great Grandfather is Edward Doty on father’s side of family!
Is he related to Anne Doty? She is one of my great grandmothers. Also just received a familysearch.org notice that on my Lacey side I am 2nd cousin 12 times removed to Mayflower – James Chilton.
just found out he is my 13th ggf
It appears that Mary Chilton / Winslow is my 10th gr grandmother, via a circular route, but i may have a more direct connection route to William Brewster and William Bradford.
I descend from James Chilton and Edward Winslow, but my DNA connects to people with the following last names as distant relatives: Alden, Billington, Bradford, Brewster, Browne,Chilton, Cooke, Doty, Eaton, Fullerton, Hopkins, Howland, Priest, Rogers, Samson, Soule, Warren, and Winslow. I may be related to most of the survivors!
I also have multiple links and am not surprised given the size of the community. My husband is from a German community and almost everyone is related somehow… so, I’m guessing this might be a similar situation with the Pilgrims.
Edward Doty is my 11th great grandfather and Samuel Fuller, who was also on the Mayflower, is my 9th great grandfather!
I don`t know about it being a badge of honor (perhaps so) but such things as Mayflower descents, royal descents, Loyalist descents and Veteran descents are very much common place and part of who we are genetically speaking. They are all of interest to most people , yet do not in fact define who we may be completely. We can`t rest on their achievements and make none of of own. That said I have Alden / Mullins, Doty, Cooke, Hopkins (and both wives), Chilton, Cushman, Howland/ Tilley/ Hurst, Warren, Edward Fuller, and Soule ancestors on both sides of my family tree.
James…. don’t be so hard on yourself. Growing up in Plymouth I worked many summers aboard the Mayflower II as a guide. These were just people seeking religious & political freedom. You are who you are.
Hello, Rick. Well said. When I look at John Howland’s well known descendants I could cringe thinking I’m related. Can’t help that, can we? On the flip side…a maternal g-grandfather was murdered by the Bloody Benders. It’s been quite an exciting journey learning about my ancestors.
I just learned I am related to Priscilla, wife of John Alden. She is my 10th GGM on my Paternal side.
I’m related to John Alden
Me too.
I think I’m a descendant of George Soule, who was a servant of the Winslow’s on the Mayflower. I think I’m related, through a winding path of several families, namely the Youngs, the Crandalls, the Fones, Martha West to finally Susanna Soule and her father George. Phew, those old folks did a lot of playing around. Now I’d like to verify all of my info and get information on a Mayflower Society, if there is one. Will someone please reply, thank you. Dick
Why not poke around online or open an Ancestry.com account and look there? George Soule has been researched to death. It’s probably pretty certain that everything you’re looking for to trace your ancestry back to him has already been done by somebody.
Edward Doty is my 9th Great-grandfather on my father’s maternal side.
mom always told we were from a doty on the mayflower who fought a duel on the shore when they landed-they moved up to Nova Scotia and then moved back-the family are in Danvers, Essex county. I never met any of them as they moved back when I was not even born yet-many were sailors and in the US military from what I heard-her parents were Ellsworth and Alberta (Porter) Doty and they lived in weymouth NS
I am a descendant of Richard Warren
Same! Hi, extremely distant relative!
He’s my 13th great-grandfather, hello distant family!
As am I. Such fun to make distant family connections!
One more descendant of Richard Warren here. Hello family !
Richard Warren is my 10 great grandfather. His daughter Anna married Thomas Little Jr whose father Thomas Little sr was on the Mayflower. Hi cousins!!
Hello Cousins! Richard Warren is my 13th great-grandfather! How incredible is this?!
Decendant of Richard Warren, John Tilly, Elizabeth Tilly, John Howland
From the Dexter back to Delano back to the Warren family!
William Brewster
My brother told me recently that we are descendants of William Brewster, Alden’s and others he had mentioned but I still need to talk more in depth.
We do know that we are descendants of Mathew Fuller( the Pilgrim’s doctor), which came later to be with his family, the Fullers as well as related to the Alden’s daughter Pricilla whom married the Bass boy (a gr…. uncle of ours).
How is it your list is missing William Mullins, father of Priscilla who was wife to John Alden? Their descendants are numerous including my son who counts William, John Alden, Myles Standish and George Soule among his ancestors.
William Mullins, his wife Alice and son Joseph all died within months of arriving in the New World, along with their servant Robert Carter. Only their daughter Priscilla survived. William may have been the first of the family to die, probably on February 21, 1621. In his will, written on his deathbed, he mentioned “my man Robert” indicating Carter was still alive then. Per Stratton, Alice, her son Joseph and servant Robert Carter were all alive on April 5, 1621 when the Mayflower set sail on its return voyage to England, but all had died before the arrival of the ship Pricilla Married John Alden so descendants of Pricilla and John Alden are also descendants of William Mullins, It’s nice extra information but just to find out if you are a mayflower descendent not nessecary since John Alden and Pricilla were also on the ship and since she was his daughter and did not keep the last name it is easier to trace it to John Alden then to William Mullins.
Mayflower descendants track through the male who booked passage, in this case William Mullins who booked the passage for his family should be listed among the male passengers. My son (through his father) is descended from William through Priscilla as well as John Alden, Myles Standish and George Soule.
We can be descended from the WOMEN who were on the Mayflower, too, not just the men. Like it or not, women do play a role in reproduction! And very few people are descended from just one male passenger.
But, isn’t it also true that most of the women had no known last names, and so it becomes a whole lost search for Francis … Unknown, or Mary.. Unknown. My search has led me to continue my maiden name so that eventually, one can be found among their ancestors.
Yes I was wondering why only the males decendants are mentioned here and ps BTW where are the Tilleys they are not mentioned at all.
Related to Edward Fuller and wife q9 times gr grandfather Samuel Fuller 9 times great uncle, the Tilleys and the Chilton’s (Mary) I think her parents perished on board just before they went Ashore
My guess is that the original qualifying lines to join the Mayflower Society went only to signers of the Compact who were all men.
That would be because all Tilley descendants are also descendants of John Howland whom she married after the death of her parents. It would be redundant to list them both since she did not have any other children except for those she had with John Howland.
Nope. Elizabeth Tilley was not the only child of John Tilley and Joan Hurst. I’m a descendant of John Tilley but not John Howland. Elizabeth Tilley is my 11th great-grand aunt. John Tilley and Joan Hurst are my 12th great grandparents. Unrelated but William Bradford is also my 13th great grandfather.
This article lists Lizzie Borden as a Mayflower descendant, but I don’t think that she was.
Lizzie borden lived in Fall river and was suspected to have killed her stepmother and father, she was not on the mayflower because she was born in 1860 but if you would like to learn more about her you can look her up and read some articles all about her.
Is anyone here related to George Soule?
I’m descended from George Soule through his son, Nathaniel.
I am a descendant of George soule.
I’m related to George Soule.
I am descended from George Soule through his daughter Susanna.
I would very much like to compare notes with you. I am working on Ancestry. Our line goes from Susannah to son John West, then William West, Ichabod West, Penelope West, Lucy Covell, Louisa Chaddock, Cyrus Weaver, Esther Weaver to us. Thank you in advance. Marjorie Davis
Mother’s maiden name white want to find if there is a connection to Benjamin white Sr 1784- 1836
Constance Hopkins is my 13th great grandmother
And Mary Snow her daughter is my 12th great grandmother
I am.descended from William Brewster.
I am a direct descendent of William Bradford by both name and lineage. We have traced our family name all the way back to the house of bourbon.
I have two proven ancestors William Bradford and John Alden
The branch of the billingtons I am from originate from Cheshire England.my son now lives in the USA and very proud to be linked to the billingtons,Hi relations
over the pond .stay happy and safe.
My 8th great grand father William Bradford recommended that my 9th great grandfather John Billington be hanged. Nice to meet you cousin.
You left off Richard More from whom I am descended.
I am also a descendant of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley! My family are descended from many folks who lived north of Boston, including E. Tilley!
same
The Howlands are also my great grandparents. I’m not sure how many times removed. So cool to see more very distant cousins
John & Elizabeth Tilly Howland are my 8x g-grandparents. It’s fun searching sites like this and “meeting” so many cousins.
John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley were my 11th great grandparents too.
We are descendants as well from st thomas , Ontario Canada
I am also a relation to John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. I live in Australia and have connections to Bunker and Fisk ancestors who settled in Australia
My English teacher is William Bradford
same
Looking to confirm ancestry with Sam Fuller
Same. My grandmother gave me a computer print of our cascading pedigree to William Bradford III, thru his son William Bradford IV. Known for awhile but never met any others. ????
William and Alice Bradford were my 9th great grandparents, my family traveled west and eventually settled in Canada’s West.
I grew up knowing I was a descendant of this guy who came over on the Mayflower. It was William Brewster. It’s probably mostly fiction (or perhaps a child’s fantasy?) but I remember learning he was a “stow-away preacher” on the Mayflower. This is not documented and again may be tainted by a child’s mind at the time of memory-commitment, ha…but I thought fun to share.
I was also told he was my 14th-great-grandfather. I’m tracing things now on Ancestry.com (trial membership for the moment, so I’m hustling lol) to confirm that. My mother, Carol, daughter of Anita (nee) Brewster is the last of our line in William’s Bible in a museum in LA…I’m also told. 😉
re: 14th-great-grandfather
I was born 1979…not sure of those generation numbers…but let me get back to genealogy lol.
Use familysearch.org, that is how I found out that I am related to alot of people on the mayflower, start a family tree with as much information as you can and then information that others have found will show up on your tree. it is managed by the mormon church.
Michael P.
I’m related to a William Brewster born in 1600. I would be interested in more info about him. Can we compare notes? You may be one of those “shirt-tail” relatives my grandmother used to talk about!
William Brewster was not a “stowaway”, he was an older well respected minister in the group. I am quite sure I am descended from him so have read a lot about him.
William Brewster is my ancestor twice, through two of his son Jonathan’s daughters: Elizabeth and Ruth. William was on the run from English law, but then all of the passengers were rebels against the English church. William Brewster was a spiritual leader in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England and later of the Plymouth church – he was known as Elder William Brewster.
I’m the 9th great-granddaughter descended from William White, Susanna White and their son Resolved White. My father would often joke that although we are Canadian we’re more “American” than most.
My great grandma is Mary Elizabeth White, her great grandpa is William White, born in 1770, his wife was Polly Hunt. But her father, Elisha John White was married to Martha Crane, whos father was Francis Crane. but how do I get back to 1620?
Erin, we are cousins! On my mother’s side (the Whites) I am descended from Peregine White – the Mayflower baby. :). I have confirmed this with 2 different friends using different resources. Hello cousin!
I believe my ancestor Catherine white botn 1820 who was my 3rd great grandmother is descended from William white mayflower passenger I think she was born in Dublin can I prove this as I saw it on my ancestry account
my great grandmother was also Mary Elizabeth White. where can i find descendants beyound her? Hi to new found family. Are any of you on Ancestry DNA? I am.
Between my Father’s side of the family and my Mother’s side of the family with help from FamilySearch.com and Ancestry.com our family lineage was traced back to 20 passengers on the Mayflower.
A friend said there great great great great grandfather was on the Mayflower could you find Edward Margeson
You left Richard More of the list of male passengers. Please correct this.
I recently discovered that I am descended from Peregrine White (the Mayflower Baby). Peregrine White is my 9th Great-grandfather. And my family line also includes Myles Standish and John Alden! I never imagined I might be descended from 1 passenger of the Mayflower, never mind 3! Any other cousins out there?
Peregrine is my 12th Grand Uncle and Resolved is my 12 th Great Grandpa. Their parents are my 11th Great Grandparents.
this cousin is also descended from John Alden also Edward Doty
Am directly related to Peregrine White through mother’s side. Lots of notes and pictures. My mother was a historical buff.
My father Brayton White thinks we are direct descendants of Peregrine White.
My father B.White has always said we’re descended from Peregrine White and we have an old morter and pestle we think came over on the Mayflower.
I think I may be too .
My father always spoke of a Martha white.
My grandma was Laura white. She married a Strong.
I’m a direct decendant of Peregrine White too!
I am descended from both Isaac Allerton through is daughter Mary and William Bradford. Interestingly, Mary Allerton married Thomas Cushman who was the ward of William Bradford after his parents dies.
A minor edit. You don’t have to be a descendant of one of the male passengers to join the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. You can also be a descendant of one of the women or children on board. I’m the past governor of the New Hampshire Mayflower Society, and I descend from ten passengers – two of them were women, and two girls (one was about fifteen years old in 1620, and the other girl was only five years old during the passage to the New World).
Is there a list of the women and the children of the Mayflower?
I was pleased to find out that I am the descendant of John Adams who
arrived on THE FORTUNE, the ship that followed the Mayflower, in November of 1621. I am now trying to find the relatives of John Eliot, the Apostle to the Indians, who arrived in the colony on THE LYON in November of 1631.
I AM A DECENDANT OF JOHN ELIOT
Yes look up Mayflower Original passenger list it is fantastic.
I am the 11th great-grandson of Stephen Hopkins. I would like to find more about him and his descendants, how can I?
How can I join the General Society of Mayflower Descendants?
I am not the 11th great-grandson of Stephen Hopkins, I am actually the 12th, please pardon the mistake.
I’m a 13th Great Granddaughter of Stephen Hopkins. Just learning all about it. Also 12th of Gov Thomas Prence.
Go to The Mayflower Society website:
https://themayflowersociety.org
I think the first step is to submit your lineage for verification – once your lineage is established, you are eligible to join. I just submitted mine a few days ago – I believe I am a greatx10 grandson of Stephen Hopkins through his son Giles, and also a descendant of Elder William Brewster through his daughter Patience. Good luck!
Stephen Hopkins has a fascinating life story. He originally went to the Jamestown colony, was shipwrecked in Bermuda, organized a mutiny, was sentenced to death, pardoned at the last minute, spent several years in Jamestown, got word his wife in England had died, returned to England, remarried, and then boarded the Mayflower with his new wife and children. His experiences in Virginia and knowledge of Algonquin proved extremely useful to the Plymouth settlers. There are several books written about him, including “Here Shall I Die Ashore: STEPHEN HOPKINS: Bermuda Castaway, Jamestown Survivor, and Mayflower Pilgrim” by Caleb Johnson, and “A Stranger Among Saints: Stephen Hopkins, the Man Who Survived Jamestown and Saved Plymouth,” by Jonathan Mack. There is also an older children’s book about his daughter, “Constance: A Story of Early Plymouth” by Patricia Clapp.
I’m a descendant of Stephen Hopkins too. There’s a bunch on line about him nowadays
Richard Warren
Hey! Me too! Richard Warren
Me three! Richard Warren twice: once through daughter Mary, and once through daughter Abigail.
Richard Warren is my 10th grandfather. I’ve seen many with direct lines to someone through more than one child. How does that work? It’s very interesting.
I was told I am related to Richard Warren as well. Grandmother was Mary Warren. from VT. Moved to MA. Any info would be helpful.
I am Samuel fuller 13th great grandson, and Edward fuller 14th great grandson. My grandfather ted odenweller sent me an email with the family tree linking us all the way back. He is 85 and going in to surgery on wedsday to remove a tumor. I hope he has a good recovery.
Same family line here as well! Also a Fuller.
I too am a descendant of Samuel Fuller, the Colony’s Physician. He is my 9th Great Grandfather.
Same! I’m unsure of how many greats but I am the [insert how many greats] granddaughter of Samuel Fuller! So strange to know we are related.
I too am a Fuller descendent, from Elizabeth, daughter of Capt. Matthew Fuller, son of Edward. She married Moses Rowley, and I believe his sister Sarah married another descendent of Pilgrims-Jonathan Hatch, Sr. It would have been a small pool of people available in that time, and any information that is provable is good information, yes? I am still untangling all of those lines.
I am both Fuller and a Doty. Sam Fuller’s great-granddaughter married Edward Doty’s grandson. I am 13 generations from Edward Doty and 15 generations from Edward Fuller.
Is a second cousin 13 times removed considered being a descendant?
I have read that Edward Doty came as an indentured servant to Stephan Hopkins. I believe I am a great x 10 grandson of Stephen Hopkins – so, my question is this – is the indenture still in effect? I sure could use a hand around my place, LOL!
John, I worked at the Yale Office of Undergraduate Admissions in the 1960s and a woman there named Nellie P. Elliot was in charge, very well known in the University. She was a descendant of John Eliot, apostle to the Indians, as he was known though their last name had been changed to Elliot. She lived in a very old historic house in Clinton CT. She died quite awhile ago but came from a big family, some may be still in that area now. I live in VA now so don’t hear much from that area anymore. But there is a lot of information about that family online and in books. You can e-mail me if you wish, though I don’t have any further information on them. Nancy
It is not surprising that those of hubris Mayflower origins should demonstrate their guilt for treatment of Amerindians and Slavery. The majority of later immigrant ancestry have none of the “white” guilt or “responsibility for the above sins. JMNSHO.
Myles Standish is a ancestral relative. Mama said he was not direct line but related by blood none the less. Given he was afraid to ask Pricilla to marry him 😀 I am kind of ok with not knowing where he fits on the family tree God bless him.
I just found out that Captain Myles Standish, is where my mothers , Great, Great,
Great, Great. Great, Great Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather. Her Maiden name was Phelps.
My brothers and I are 14th generation descendents of John and Priscilla Alden through their 6th child Ruth who married John Bass. Thanks to the detailed genealogy by previous family
members we have this family history. A big hello to all cousins out there.
I’m a cousin and have all the genealogical tracings up to my mother and I..so interesting..I live in Idaho but was born in Illinois where many Mayflower families went..pls write if you would like..
My 14th great grand father was Thomas Rogers, my 4th Great grand father was Luke Samual Johnson (one of the original 12 pillars of the Mormon Church), his family are direct descendants to Thomas Rogers. Fascinating history.
I’m a descendant of Thomas Rogers as well, I kept seeing Mayflower descendants on my AncestryDNA line and couldn’t figure out how, but finally went far enough back. Very neat!
I mentioned in a later comment about an English teacher at my high school in RI back in the late sixties, Priscilla Alden from Barrington, RI. She was quite a character. And, as a direct descendant I bet you can locate her on your family tree.
Degory Priest is my ancestor. He died the first winter. His wife was in Holland with her two daughters. She remarried and came on a later ship with her new husband and her daughters. I am also related to the Howland’ ss through John’s brother Arthur. I also believe I am related to John Clarke, Thomas(Prince) Prence, who was governor but not in Mayflower. Also the Pratt family.
You do not list Constance Hopkins as a passenger and source of Mayflower descendants. Could you explain please?
Constance arrived with her father, Stephen Hopkins. If you are a descendant of Constance, you are by default a descendant of Stephen, so including Constance would be redundant. I believe I am descended from Stephen Hopkins through his son Giles, who was Constance’s brother. Constance and Giles were children of Stephen’s first marriage to Mary Kent, who died in England while Stephen was at the Jamestown Settlement in Virginia – in fact, it is believed that it was news of her death that prompted Stephen to return to England – he remarried, and sailed on the Mayflower with his new wife and children. Stephen was the only Mayflower passenger to have had previously spent time in the Americas.
There is no mention of the Moore and Wilkinson families? They were my ancestors and were on the Mayflower.
I am a direct descendant of William Bradford, any one else?
My former classmates at UConn was a descendant of William Bradford. His last name was Coville
8th great grandson of William Bradford and 9th great grandson of John Billington. Hello Causin.
My last name is Cary, also a 8th great grand son of John Cary 1610, joined Plymouth colony in 1634.
William Bradford is my 11th great grandfather. I’m directly connected to several Mayflower passengers.
William Bradford is my 12th great grandfather
10th great grandmother was Alice Carpenter Southworth Bradford (William’s 2nd wife)
My husband, Lewis Hathorn Smalley, who grew up in South Portland, Maine, is descended from Stephen Hopkins. We have the entire record of the ancestry.
I too am a descendant of Stephen Hopkins. He was my 10th great grandfather. Frances Cook was also my 10th great grandfather. I am also a decendant of the Winslow’s and the Chiltons. This has been great reading all of the comments! Thank you everybody!
Seen this article as placed on Facebook by a US friend. So where did they come from in Britain. The first name on the list “John Alden” appears to come from the Norwich or maybe Leeds area. https://named.publicprofiler.org appears to be very accurate.
I enjoyed reading the comments! (Like a historical “Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon”.) When I was in school at East Providence (RI) High, the English Department head was Miss Priscilla Alden, a direct descendant. Years later when I taught at the same school, we had a Latin teacher, Roger Williams, also a direct descendant. That’s New England for you!
I was born in Providence (1950), grew up in Rumford, RI (1950-1966), attended East Providence public schools (EPHS 1965-66)
Many friends were descendants, including my family from my maternal grandmother- directly from Constance Hopkins and her father Stephen Hopkins-
I am a direct ancestor of Francis Cooke (12 generations). His daughter Mary is a direct ancestor
I am also a descendent of Francis Cooke through his daughter Mary Tomson. Francis is my 10th great grandfather. I have known this for many years through genealogy with records, but I was able to also confirm it via DNA in recent years as well.
I’m digging deeper with my free Ancestry.com trial. Most of my Mayflower relation’s run through 1800’s Snow marriages. I count 11 10th great grandfathers on the 1620 Mayflower, so far: Alden, Browne, Cooke, Doty, Hopkins, Howland, Mullins, Soule, Standish, Tilley, and Warren. Some naturally go together, still 11 seems like a lot. I come from Mormon Settlers, so there are plenty more of people too similar to me everywhere out West…
I have 16 Mayflower ancestors who are all my great grandparents. I was amazed to find some from all 4 of my grandparents. Add 7 more who are great aunts and uncles and a cousin 11 times removed. My biggest help came from Family Tree. It made a pedigree chart for me automatically. I have been working on this tree with Ancestry initially. Great fun to see! I wish my parents knew this before they passed. Sue B, Bangor, Maine
My mother is from East Holden, ME. We are related to 2 people on the Mayflower, Stephen Hopkins and Thomas Rogers.
I was Born in Boston (1948) and raised in the towns of Duxbury and Plymouth. While I know for a fact that I am not a descendant of the Pilgrims, during the 1960’s I had the amazing luck of working summers aboard the Mayflower II as a guide or translator. I do recall going to the Plantation during winter months for training. In fact I still have one of the books that was required reading. The job wasn’t a job; we had so much fun meeting people from all over the world. Back in those days we wore the traditional garb of the period. On hot summer days “up on deck” it got toasty. Back then the ship was open through Thanksgiving so the change of the season’s were always a challenge to stay cool or warm. My wife and I now live outside of Seattle and have planned a trip to Plymouth, Nantucket and Maine for early October. Yes we will visit the Mayflower….
Don’t forget the Family Search web site generated by the Mormon Church. It is free and it contains a huge digital archive of records. Don’t be put off by the church part. The Mormons take genealogy very seriously. And the actual records are real.
I was born and raised in Maine and have four lines, Tilley, Chilton, Brewster and Howland. My late husband born in Boston and moved between Massachusetts and Maine had ten lines: Alden, Allerton, Billington, Cooke, Doty, Hopkins, Sampson, Soule, Standish and Warren. There may be others Ihaven’t dug into yet.
