But the popularity of this paved mountain pass, which opened in 1959, is well understood. Up and up you go, to 2,860 feet, with a scattering of lookouts where you can pull over to take in views of areas like Mad River Notch–where you can take out a picnic to linger, just a little bit longer, above the foliage.
