Scenes of Summer in Ogunquit, Maine
Ogunquit is one of the most popular coastal towns in New England, and this look at summer in Ogunquit, Maine, from photographer Kindra Clineff is the next best thing to being there!
Aerial view of the coastal town and beach in Ogunquit.
Photo Credit: Clineff, KindraPhotographer Kindra Clineff captured summer in Ogunquit, Maine — the #1 beach town in New England — from both the air and ground in this series of photographs for our 2012 cover story on The Best Beach Towns in New England. The aerial photographs she shot from a helicopter gave her a real appreciation for the beauty of this vast stretch of beach, but she also discovered that this great walking town was actually much easier to get around on foot. We can see why…
Please enjoy some of our favorite shots of summer in Ogunquit, Maine from her travels around the beautiful coastal town. They’re the next best thing to being there!

Thank you for sharing all the great pictures! It is appreciated!
We have beeb to Ogonquit several times so it was nice to see the sights from the air.
I enjoyed these pictures very much! I have been to OGUNQUIT many, many times. Probably at least 25 times. I’ve walked the Marginal Way, taken the trolley, and eaten at the many fine seafood restaurant.
THIS LOOKS LIKE A PERFECT PLACE TO GET THE COLOR BACK IN MY CHEEKS AFTER A WINTER OF BRONCHITIS. THE PICTURES ALONE BRIGHTEN MY MOOD.
We love Ogunquit and vacationed there each May for over 25 years. My heart is broken as we no longer can do this due to my husband’s health issues. I go to Ogunquit in my mind & try to re-live the beauty, smell the salt air, enjoy the seafood and the peace & relaxation I felt each time we entered the town. Thank you for these wonderful photos. They have brought tears to my eyes but they have also brought me a little peace again.
There is no other place i would rather be !!!! Spent many family and romantic weekends with my husband in the most beautiful place by the sea !!!!
When staying in Ogunquit, we walk the Marginal Way twice a day, no matter what the weather is like. It is a wonderful walk. Thank you for sharing those beautiful photos. Can’t wait to get there again. Barnacle Billy’s is a great place to eat at or just have a drink.
Ogunquit is my happy place, we have spent a week there every summer for many years. Thank you Yankee, the only magazine I subscribe to, for the beautiful pictures. I’m looking forward to our vacation even more after seeing them.
After seeing these photos I would love to visit Ogunquit. Can anyone recommend a place to stay that is handicapped friendly.
my husband used a wheelchair and several years ago we found a very nice unit with a kitchenette at the Pink Blossom. The hotel is between ogunquit and perkin’s cove with easy access to the marginal way.
Beachmere Inn also has a beautiful wheelchair accessible room with handicapped bathroom.
Ogunquit is a must every year for us for about 15 years ago. Wonderful shopping, restaurants , beaches are beautiful, theater (Ogunquit Theater)is outstanding.
Main is truly beautiful
We go alot but have yet found the perfect lodging any suggestions would be wonderful!
Beachmere Inn right on marginal way. Always stay there when we go!
We used to stay at the Anchorage – which is very nice. Moved to the Sparhawk – with balcony overlooking the ocean, so when high tide comes it’s incredible! Prefer Sparhawk for now………have already booked 2019!
For great seafood The Bull and Claw was fantastic ,!!! Great crablegs!! They are huge and best I have ever had ! Husband gets the Lobster omg they were huge too! Took up the whole plate !
It is Rita Magadieu Parker, my husbands health also keeps us from coming also, a cray knee of mine hopefully it can be fixed, I meet the surgeon next week. When I am up and walking I hope to come and stay awhile.
It was in the ‘70s and after many visits to Ogunquit I met a beautiful girl from Montreal. Needless to say we enjoyed each other’s company enjoying this wonderful town for 3 or 4 days. How can this not be a wonderful memory.
I have stayed at a B&B in Boothbay Harbor and loved it. Ogonquit is my next choice. I grew up in Massachusetts, but live in Colorado now. Miss New England.
We used to go to Ogunquit at least once a year. Health issues had us moving to AZ. I miss our trips there and our niece will be married in Bar Harbor next spring.
My husband and I have been coming to Ogunquit for over 50 years. Now we come with our extended family ( 15 total) plus friends. This was my late brother-in-law’s favorite place in the world. We put a stone with his name carved in with the stones by the little beach.
What a wonderful place, far away of my Switzerland home, but I go in September in Maine region !!! Thank you for this pictures.
It also has one of the most beautiful libraries I’ve ever seen! A must visit when you visit. It was built from donations of a widow to honor her husband—it is fabulous with huge fireplace.
I live in Maryland and have been to Ogunquit only once. It is special and I’m planning another visit. Not your usual tacky beach town.
Don’t forget to visit the art museum – American artists – it’s fantastic!!
Have been to Ogunquit many times and walked Marginal Way, and been to Barnacle Billy’s.Wonderful place, wonderful memories.
I have been going to Ogunquit for 75 years and the beach looks just the same today as it did then. It is still a beautiful community. And dont forget the delicious seafood!
Anchorage Inn is beautiful!! Sun and Surf restaurant across the street has excellent food and wonderful wait staff!!! It has been our go-to spot for a few years now!!!
I have been going to Ogunquit every year since I was born 47 years ago. As a child, my family used to regularly stay at the Colonial Village (Resort) and then the Dunes. As an adult I started taking my girlfriend and now wife, and now my 2 boys as well. We’ve stayed at many places including the Ogunquit (M)Hotel, Norseman, Footbridge Motel, Anchorage, Bourne’s, Meadowmere, Sea Castles.. probably more i can’t remember. We also stay in York at Short Sands and Union Bluff, in Wells at one of the Forbes’ places, and in Old Orchard Beach at the Edgewater. We love Maine and are hoping to move there once the kids are grown. Ogunquit will always be #1 in my heart!
I grew up in Moody, Maine and now live in Texas. Maine will always be home for me. I met my wife of 45 years in Ogunquit. When we travel, southern Maine is our preferred destination. Flo’s hot dogs, Goldenrod kisses, Barnacle Billy’s, The Ogunquit Playhouse, walks on the beach and the Marginal Way…….the list could go on and on. I started school in the one room school house on Eldridge Road, spent my 5th grade year in the Ogunquit Village School and graduated from Wells High School. Memories, I have more wonderful memories than one can imagine. Growing up in the Wells/Ogunquit area was the best time of my life.
My advice to everyone…..visit Ogunquit at least once in your life.
One place we made sure to go to was Flos hotdogs to die for that’s for sure. We honeymooned at Wells Beach ! Made sure to go to Marginal Way! I live in Va hard to get up there often. I have been 3 or 4 times. Anchorage By The Sea is a great place to stay !
I just returned from our first of 2 trips to Ogunquit 2 days ago, amid Covid-19. Ogunquit is my “happy place” – easy, beach life the way it should be. Very family friendly and definitely quintessential New England, no cheesy Jersey Shore vibe. Fabulous inns & resorts. Terrific restaurants, fabulous trolley service (not running during summer 2020 due to Covid), easily walkable and its miles of picture postcards from the beach to the area homes and route 1 drive.
Where the Ogunquit River & Atlantic meet makes a great lazy river, even adults like me love it! Looking to move up this way eventually. Maine, especially Ogunquit, lives up to their motto “life the way it should be”.
I recently stayed at the recently renovated Ogunquit River Inn and had a great stay, very clean, right on the Ogunquit River. I’ve stayed other places from on the beach to York Beach. My absolute favorite place to stay is the York Harbor Inn, just 10 minutes down the road from Ogunquit with it’s own stretch of gorgeous beach out front & blueberry pie to die for!
We will be returning at the end of August, because one week is never enough. Right now we will probably rebook at the ORI, but the Anchorage Inn & other spots listed here are absolutely awesome. Hard to go wrong booking anywhere, the standard in Ogunquit is high and there really are few properties that don’t offer a proper stay.
We have been vacationing in Ogunquit for 30 plus years. We have loved the fine dining, beautifully clean beaches, and the safe, hospitable atmosphere which is small town Maine’s attraction. We have stayed and loved many hotels in the area. The Mariner is very family oriented, the Puffin Inn is great and the Terrace by the Sea…well you can’t beat the view. Not going this yesr due to COVID but will be next year for sure…God willing….Ogunquit Maine is my family’s happy place to be.
I grew up living and working summers in Ogunquit. my family still owns the cottage near the footbridge. Walking that beach and the Marginal Way refreshes my mind and soul every time.
Born in Massachusetts, grew up in California. My husband and I loved to go to Boston and on to Ogonquit. He has now passed away and I live in Colorado. Still miss New England.
