It’s been 250 years since our divorce from England, and we’ve finally allowed ourselves to be swept up in a new romance with … Scotland? Scottish football fans brought so much zeal to New England during the World Cup’s group round, and while Scotland has sadly been eliminated, July’s matches at Boston Stadium (better known to us New Englanders as Gillette Stadium), including a quarterfinal game on July 9, are bound to keep the energy in the city at an all-time high this month, especially when you toss in tall ships and all of the doings around this year’s big birthday on the Fourth of July.

If July’s heat has you feeling too lazy to make New England travel plans, that’s why we’re here. Our Yankee team is 100% motivation and 0% perspiration, or something like that (I’m a writer; I don’t do math). If you’re not a subscriber (why aren’t you a subscriber?!), you can flip through the digital version of our July/August 2026 issue right now and discover the allure of Massachusetts’ North and South shores and myriad places where you can feel like you’ve vacationed, even if you take just one day off.

Plus, read on for my top Independence Day and July weekend event picks, July’s best travel deals in New England, and a guide to where you’ll find us out and about this summer.

Barbara Prey, one of America’s most accomplished contemporary artists best known for her large-scale watercolors, will show her newest works during a series of three exhibitions celebrating the American landscape this summer. Visit Barbara Prey Projects in MidCoast Maine, housed in what was once an N.C. Wyeth haunt, the Village Inn, for the inaugural exhibition, Barbara Prey: 250th—The American Landscape (Oil), which opens July 1. The installation will be followed by Barbara Prey: 250th—The American Landscape (Watercolor), a presentation of monumental watercolors that runs from July 13 through September 7. To close the season, The American Landscape Abroad: Art in Embassies, on view August 10 through September 7, showcases dozens of Prey’s works commissioned by US government agencies.

Celebrate the Fourth of July in New England

Fourth of July Celebration | Bristol, RI

America’s oldest continuous Independence Day par-tay, Bristol’s Fourth of July Celebration, is back for the 241st year with all of the patriotic ingredients you’d expect: a parade, music, carnival rides, and fireworks (on July 3).

Harborfest | Boston, MA

One of our nation’s largest July 4 celebrations is relatively new by comparison. For the 44th year, Boston Harborfest fills the city with celebrants, drawn to a three-day schedule of America 250 happenings, many of them free. Events in the city kick off on July 2 and culminate with the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on July 4. Lainey Wilson, Chance The Rapper, and Trombone Shorty are among the guest artists scheduled to appear. Earlier on the Fourth, starting at noon on the Esplanade, The LEGO Group invites visitors to help assemble a giant American flag, brick by brick.

Long Weekend | Hartford, CT

Connecticut’s capital hosts the state’s largest America 250 bash, stretching the Fourth of July into a five-day Long Weekend event envisioned to be the start of a new city tradition. From July 1-5, music, film, art, and technology converge, and Hartford will become a living stage. Many events are free; some require tickets or passes, which can be purchased online. The centerpiece is Saturday’s Hartford Bonanza, a free festival from noon until 10 p.m. in Bushnell Park that concludes with a commemorative concert by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and fireworks. Don’t miss the chance to see Rebellious, a new exhibition at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History, during free-admission days from June 30 through July 5 (closed on July 4).

Weekend of July 4-5, 2026

Lost Fox Independence Day BBQ | Litchfield, CT

Feast your eyes on the Fourth of July when Lost Fox Inn hosts an Independence Day BBQ on Saturday, open to all. Advance ticket purchase is encouraged.

Independence Day Beach Ball | Watch Hill, RI

Whether you’re happy for Watch Hill’s most famous homeowner, Taylor Swift, or wistful she’s no longer single (if her rumored wedding at Madison Square Garden actually happens on July 3), Ocean House is a stylish spot for an Independence Day Beach Ball. This signature July 4 tradition features a classic New England lobster boil, a sushi station, specialty cocktails, live music, and dancing with an Atlantic Ocean backdrop, all culminating in a seaside fireworks display. Tickets can be purchased online.

Weekend of July 11-12, 2026

Sail Boston | Boston, MA

In honor of America’s 250th birthday and in partnership with Sail250, Sail Boston brings the largest-ever assemblage of elite tall ships and military ships from around the world to Boston Harbor from July 11 through 16. If you’re a fan of that medicinal-tasting yet oddly refreshing soda, patented back in 1876 as “Moxie Nerve Food” by a Mainer, Dr. Augustin Thompson, then the Moxie Festival is for you. This 42nd annual event celebrating a true taste of New England promises to be the orangest one yet, with madcap happenings July 10-12 that range from a chugging contest to Maine’s longest parade on Saturday, July 11. Wear orange if you want to fit in.

Pursuit of Happiness 5K | Exeter, NH

The inaugural Pursuit of Happiness 5K is a new addition to the American Independence Center’s annual American Independence Festival on Saturday, July 11. Register to run or walk, and your participation fee supports this nonprofit that is so much more than a museum. It also earns you your first Sam Adams beer at the festival, which is steps away from the finish line and open free to all. There’ll be opportunities to observe historic trades, to chat with George Washington, and to see New Hampshire’s original copy of the Declaration of Independence, which arrived in Exeter on July 16, 1776.

Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival | Across Cape Cod

It’s opening weekend for this 10-day celebration of glorious blooms across Cape Cod, July 10-19. If you missed seeing a parade and fireworks on July 4, head to the Hillsboro Summer Festival: an old-timey community celebration that’s been a tradition for more than 35 years. The carnival runs July 9-12, but the main events, including the Women’s Skillet Toss (you don’t see that every day!) are reserved for the weekend.

Opera North Presents The Ballad of Baby Doe | Cornish, NH

There are few American operas, and this one, The Ballad of Baby Doe, based on a true story of New Englanders “gone West,” will take you on a wild ride. Head to Blow-Me-Down-Farm as Opera North brings this tale of a love triangle and an American Dream gone wrong to mesmerizing life. Opening night is Sunday, July 12, and there will be two additional performances on Wednesday, July 15, and Friday, July 17.

Weekend of July 18-19, 2026

Yarmouth Clam Festival | Yarmouth, ME

I always get a giggle out of the clam mascot that roams around this enduring festival, which has saluted the humble clam for 59 years. If you’re heading to the Yarmouth Clam Festival, July 17-19, you’re in for more food and fun than you imagine. Try not to fill up at a pancake breakfast because there is so much to sample, starting, of course, with fried clams and clam chowder (plus steak sandwiches, a literal ton of french fries, and strawberry shortcake). You’ll be thoroughly entertained by everything from a parade to the Diaper Derby, from live bands and the Maine State Clam Shucking Contest to the Main Street Rumble car show.

Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival | Revere, MA

It’s the 22nd anniversary for this seaside festival that elevates sand play to an art form.
