Best Hot Dogs in New England
Where are the best hot dogs in New England? It was a tough assignment, but Yankee contributor Mike Urban set out to discover (and devour) the region’s most delicious wieners.

Two dogs with spicy relish at Blackie’s.
Photo Credit: Kim Knox BeckiusRed snappers, New York Systems, Coney Islands, two-footers—these are just some of the interesting and unusual hot dog species that inhabit the New England culinary kingdom. Yankee contributor Mike Urban recently went on a hot dog safari, and here are his top picks (in no particular order) from New England’s colorful world of wieners.
Guide to the Best Hot Dogs in New England
Doogie’s | Newington, CT
Home of the two-footer hot dog, Doogie’s is more than just a novelty shop. The grilled pork-and-beef wieners here, which come from nearby Rosol’s Meats, are genuinely tasty, regardless of their length. In addition to the two-footer with the works (chili, cheese, onions, and roasted peppers—big enough for two people), try the “College”—a 16-incher with chili, bacon, sauerkraut, jalapeños, cheddar, and American cheese on a garlic roll.

Flo’s Hot Dogs | Cape Neddick, ME
This classic Maine roadside shack has no phone, no lobster roll, and no spare headroom, with its six-foot-high ceiling in the cramped order/dining area. But it has a couple of extraordinary steamed hot dogs that are well worth checking out. The customers’ favorite (and with good reason) is the House Special, which is adorned with Flo’s special relish, mayo (yes, mayo), and celery salt. The “Loaded” dog comes with mustard, green relish, Flo’s relish, chopped onions, and celery salt. Because it’s Maine, you have to order a Moxie, too.

Nick’s Hot Dogs | Fall River, MA
In hot-dog-crazy Fall River, Nick’s stands head and shoulders above the competition. Purveyors of locally famous Coney Island–style hot dogs, this 1920s-era shop has held fast to its traditions. The recipe for the meat sauce, which is slathered onto the dogs was created by founder Nick Pappas nearly a century ago, and remains a secret. Add a squiggle of mustard and a sprinkling of chopped raw onion, and the Nick’s dog is complete. At least two wieners are recommended for a full meal, along with a side of hand-cut fries and a tall mug of ice-cold coffee milk. Be sure to enjoy your meal while sitting at one of the school desks from the 1800s that line the back wall of the restaurant.

Super Duper Weenie | Fairfield, CT
Super Duper is tops when it comes to hot dogs in New England. The meaty franks here are split and grilled and served in as many as eight different ways. The New Englander (sauerkraut, bacon, mustard, homemade sweet relish, and chopped raw onion) is the dog of choice, served on a soft, home-baked bun. Other wienies on the menu (New Yorker, Chicagoan, Californian, Dixie, Cincinnatian, and Georgia red hot) cover much of the rest of the American hot dog landscape. Be sure to throw in an order of fresh-cut french fries, made from Super Duper’s specially procured potatoes.

Blackie’s | Cheshire, CT
This barn-like stand has been around in one form or another in the same spot since 1928. The hot dogs are boiled in oil until the casings split, giving the wieners (from Martin Rosol’s Meats in nearby New Britain) a taste and texture somewhere between grilled and steamed. All dogs are served plain on soft buns; customers then apply spicy brown mustard and peppery homemade relish to each pup. Birch beer on tap is the preferred beverage, and there are no fries, just chips. Nota bene: Blackie’s is closed on Fridays, in keeping with the once-cardinal Catholic rule of no meat on that day.

Olneyville New York System | Providence & Cranston, RI
Olneyville is the premier spot for “New York System” hot wieners in Rhode Island. So named as part of a marketing gimmick in the early 1900s, these dogs are best when ordered “all the way”—mustard, a spicy meat sauce, finely chopped raw onion, and a dash of celery salt. Be sure to order more than one, and wash them down with the Rhode Island beverage of choice: coffee milk—a glass of plain milk with a generous shot of coffee syrup mixed in. Watch the cooks line wieners in buns up their arms while dressing them with condiments en masse. It’s quite a show!

Wein-O-Rama | Cranston, RI
With the look and feel of a 1960s coffee shop, Wein-O-Rama has a variety of breakfast and lunch items on the menu. But WOR’s raison d’être is its New York System hot wieners, which they cook by the dozens in plain sight on the upfront griddle throughout the day. Order two or more with “the works”—mustard, spicy meat sauce, onions, and celery salt on steamed buns. The “small” coffee milk here is big enough to bathe in.

Simones’ Hot Dog Stand | Lewiston, ME
This super friendly hot dog emporium in the old mill town of Lewiston has the warm look and feel of a diner on the inside, and the finest hot dogs in central Maine. Home of the “red snapper” hot dog, Simones’ wieners are bright red, plump, and steamed to perfection. Try the kraut dog, loaded with homemade sauerkraut and mustard, or the chili cheese dog, smothered in a meaty chili sauce and graced with a generous helping of melted cheese. Wednesdays are $1 hot-dog days, the owners’ way of saying thanks to their many loyal customers.

Wasses Hot Dogs | Rockland, ME
A tiny hot dog empire has sprouted in mid-coast Maine: Wasses Hot Dogs has four retail outlets and counting. The original Wasses, just off Main Street in Rockland, began business under the ownership of Keith Wass in 1972. The Wasses method of cooking is to fry the hot dogs on a griddle in a shimmering pool of hot peanut oil. The unbreaded “fried onions,” cooked in the same manner, are a must-have on each Wasses wiener. Try the hot dog with the works or the “Texan,” which is smothered with bacon, fried onions, ketchup, and baked beans.

Jack’s Hot Dog Stand | North Adams, MA
This cramped, dimly lit spot in northwestern Massachusetts has been slinging weenies since 1917. Current owner Jeff Levanos is the third generation of the Levanos family to hold dominion over Jack’s. Hot dogs here are best ordered two at a time, along with Jack’s famous, hand-cut fries. Try the dog with the works and the chili cheese dog, which features a slice of white American cheese in lieu of gloopy cheese sauce.

Tex Barry’s Coney Island Diner | Attleboro, MA
Located in a small Worcester diner car on the edge of a narrow canal, Tex Barry’s is a southern Massachusetts institution when it comes to hot dogs and hospitality. The diner has been around since 1924, serving Coney Island hot dogs, cooked on a foil-covered griddle and packed into perfectly steamed side-split buns. The tangy hamburger sauce is a must, along with a smear of mustard and a topping of chopped raw onion. The diner’s compact interior engenders conversations between everyone in the place, and the convivial atmosphere adds greatly to the hot dog experience.

Gilley’s PM Lunch | Portsmouth, NH
New England diners are usually good bets for tasty hot dogs, and Gilley’s is no exception. Housed in a 1940s Worcester diner car tucked away on a side-street in downtown Portsmouth, Gilley’s prides itself on its small but alluring hot dog menu. You may choose between plain, chili, kraut, chili-cheese, or “loaded,” with ketchup, mustard, relish, and onions. Gilley’s hot dogs are made from beef, pork, and veal, and they come from Shields Provisions, a nearby family-run business. Good news for the late-night crowd: Gilley’s is open until 2 a.m.

Where are your favorite spots for the best hot dogs in New England? Let us know!
This post was first published in 2016 and has been updated.
The best hot dogs in New England are in Waterbury,Conn at Frankie’s Hot Dogs. They far outweigh Blackies in Cheshire.I live in California and have never had a hot dog close to Frankie’s.They are foot long, toasted roll and toppings galore.
The very best hot dogs in New England are Rosie’s on the breakwater in Eastport, Maine! I have been enjoying them since I worked summers at Holmes Packing Corp’ when I attended Univ. of Maine in the 1960’s. I would cross Water Street and buy a birch beer at Lucy Gardner’s quonset hut convenience store to make my perfect meal. Rosie’s is still there, and I will be having a dog over the annual Fourth of July!
I love Rosie’s too , will be glad when the breakwater is finshed being repaired so I can enjoy a hotdog sitting here !!
Every time I go home to Worcester to visit rhe family I have to stop and enjoy some dogs at Coney Island. No place in Delaware where I live even com3s close!
They may not be the best, but Coney Island Hot Dogs in Worcester, Mass has the best neon sign. Last I checked they were still $1.50 and the place hasn’t changed in forty years. (Hope it’s still there).
Top Dog on Bearskin Neck in Rocmport, MA.
The Dog House in Dennis port Cape Cod! Best charbroiled split dogs and fantastic homemade fries. And an endless menu including seafood – fish tacos, quo hogs.etc. But the hot dogs are signature!! Open Memorial day to Columbus day.
Coney Island in Worcester, MA
Amazing original Deco decor. Awesome service. I’m always treated like a friend of the family and I don’t even know anyone who works there. Order your number of dogs “up” and it’s their signature chili meat sauce. It’s a tradition to get a chocolate milk. It’s like stepping back in time with decades of sweethearts names carved all over the booths.
anyplace that serves kayem natural casing dogs…they are the very best….
Capital Lunch in new Britain Connecticut,. Best in state. Great meat sauce.
Wasses Hot dogs in Rockland. Maine
Silver Ranch, Jaffrey NH
I guess Worcester got skipped over again. We have Coney Island Hot Dogs in Worcester and Hot Dog Annies nearby the Leicester/Paxton line. Both are incredible.
would have to agree w Michael Cappabianca re Coney Island and also add nicks nest in Holyoke a family tradition since the 50’s
Casey’s in Natick,MA, are my pick for best dogs in New England!
I cant even imagine a best hot dog article without Casey’s Diner in Natick, MA being at the very top of the list! the best in the land!
Although they are not culinary works of art, the best hot dogs are Fenway Franks at Fenway Park while watching the Sox play.
Nothing brings me back in time like a dog at the park.
Merritt Canteen in Bridgeport, Ct is the best chili dog hands down
I have to disagree with his article. I have eaten at hot dogs resturants/stands/trucks/carts/ you name it across the country, ht only dog I have have craved, and have craved sense I was 12 years old (now 30), is Top Dog hot dog stand In Portland CT.
The Cajun dog, with pepper jack and cajun relish is mouth watering. The snap of the hot dog is in overbite I have not found a hot dog that compares. I like, no, I love hot dogs, but most of the time they are nothing more then a snack to hold me over until dinner. Not that case with Top Dog. Catch her at the right time and she has a local mustard called “curley’s” with cajun relish or simply add onion, i say this once, you won’t find a mustard on a dog that stands to this stuff.
JR
Top Dog is terrific!! I grew up in East Hampton and have been visiting her “hotdog” stand for many years. It’s the only stand I know of that shaped like a hotdog in a bun!
It still is! The first time I went here was about 1976. It hasn’t changed a bit since then! Hot dogs still fabulous…..
Hot Dog Annie’s in Leicester,MA! Love the homemade BBQ sauce they have.
Frankie’s in Waterbury, CT – Hands Down the best hot dogs…..
Please consider JJ’s in your next adventure…you wont be sorry!!!
What about grumpy grampies in Cornish me on rt 160
They have the best
I have eaten at blackies,Frankie’s,Maine red hot dogs, Fenway Frank’s at ball park, but best I have ever had , route 7 Main Street south in Kent Ct, road side stand, best ever. Great variety of hotdogs. And his special onions like spaghetti sauce cooked ” secret” .great addition.
I noticed u have north Adams on her how bout a venture south about 15 minutes to Pittsfield. For the best baby dogs we have two long standing hot dog joints one is Teo’s the other properly named the hot dog ranch both grill Whorle’s hot dogs from the well know Whorle’s wholesale meats. Order them with everything onion mustard and sauce. Tater tots and nice tall glass of favorite beverage both have full bars. As they are babies u need about three or four
Can’t believe that Capitol Lunch in New Britain, Ct, wasn’t included. With out them this list is bogus at best.
Oh Mike Urban, we love Yankee Magazine but you missed the very best. First, it’s got to be a Hummel’s dog. Then, it’s go to be char-broiled. We’re talkin’ Glenwood Drive-In, Route 10, Whitney Ave., 3 blocks north of Hamden Town Hall. Hey, Doogie’s is great. Blackie’s isn’t fine. And the guy that’s talkin Fenway Frank’s doesn’t even rate comment. If the Sox fed him Alpi, he’d be in. Now cmon down and try Glenwood. Some pretty smart folks have been downing Glenwood dogs for decades and we know.
You missed Milsie’s in CT!! By far THE best dogs in CT.
I’d have to give my vote as Hot Dog Annie’s in Leicester. Grilled with Bar-b-que and onions. The only thing that has changed in 45 years is the price. Used to get 12 for a buck…
For over 50 years, we have enjoyed stopping at Tom’s in Whately, MA. Always a treat to get those steamed foot longs with the works when we were kids.
What about Saugy’s in Rhode Island. You would walk a mile to get a Saugy!
I would, moved to Houston TX in 1979 and every time I flew home, I would bring bach saugy hotdogs, soft-sided rolls and autocrat coffee syrup for the kids. Dang I am getting hungry.
Nothing worse than having a homesick stomach…
I agree that Hot Dog Annie’s in Leicester is great. The two that top my list are Top Dog in Rockport, MA and Red’s Eats in Wiscasset, ME. While Red’s is best known for its lobster rolls, their hot dogs are darn good too.
Nick’s Nest in Holyoke – Best by far – for years and years!
Absolutely! This list is goofy.
Capital Lunch in New Britain, Ct should be on top of list. They are the best with their famous chilly sauce,
I second the motion stating that Casey’s in Natick, MA is tops for dogs in New England! My father started taking me there over 50 years ago and when in New England on business, I stop by there for lunch in this original Worcester Lunch Car with eight stools and a sliding window on the side for carryout. Located at 36 South Ave., they have been in business for 120 years (4 generations of the family!) and, they are the best!!
I 2nd the fact that Casey’s is the best!
The Glenwood in Hamden has been Hot Dog heaven for over 50 years, still going strong, Also, try Capt. Seas in Wallingford a close 2nd.
Glenwood Drive-in in Hamden CT has the best dogs hands down!
Gilleys –wonderful memories, the dog cart was parked downtown in the evening. A treat to go there with grandparents when I was a girl in the 50’s. Never have forgotten that snap when you bit into them.
The best hot dogs is Gary”s – Best in new Bedford. They one I like is the hot dog with linguica sauce on it…
obviously this guy hasn’t been to either coney island in worcester or hot dog annies in leicester – both in massachusetts …
Top Dog in Rockport, MA – hands down is the best in New England.
Was very surprised not to see Snappy Dogs in Hopkinton, MA listed in your Best hot dogs of New England…..
Get in line (and it may be long) to get the best dogs in New England at Coney Island in Worcester since 1919. Then enjoy them as you sit back and eat them in a scene from an Edward Hopper painting.
Glad to see Nick’s from my hometown of Fall River, MA made the list!!!
Doug’s Dogs food truck in Marlborough, NH. Not fancy…simply great!!
I would add Snappy Dogs in Hopkinton MA to the list. Lisa Hachey and her partner, Teresa, serve up a nice choice of dogs, but it’s the wonderful relishes and toppings –all home made by Lisa — that really set Snappy Dogs apart. And with any luck, Lisa will have some of her amazing whoopie pies when you visit.
You’ve gotta try the Blue Rooster Food Company on Dana Street in Portland, Maine!
The Connecticut best dog is anywhere that serves a Hummel’s with casing. We never take our summer vacation without an abundant supply, so there’s enough to share with the uninitiated. Nothing like a Hummel’s.
The best hot dogs in the world are Hummels natural casing from New Haven. The best way to cook them is broiling. Thus, every frank in the world can frankly bow to Glenwood Drive-In, Route 10, Hamden, CT. I’ve had many of the others. I’ve eaten Capital Lunch of New Britain, Nick’s Nest of Holyoke, Blackie’s of Waterbury. No contest! Jimmie’s of Savin Rock were great back in the day but Glenwood has reigned supreme for a half-century.
Love Glenwood, have been eating there for almost 60 years. But they missed so many other great dogs. What about Dino’s in North Haven, Rawleys, Super Duper Weenie, Saints. They are all good. I would saw Glenwood is by far the best in CT and Frankies would be next.
Teo’s in Pittsfield MA are my favorite. Now I’m drooling!
Teo’s Hotdogs in Pittsfield are fantastic. Little crunch from the natural casing.. Everything sauce is phenomenal…
I have seen Sullivan’s on Castle Island in South Boston as the best. I had some and they are delicious.
How could you possibly leave out Coney Island Hot Dog in Worcester?! Best hot dogs in New England!!
I don’t live in New England anymore (and I miss it every single day!), but my favorite place for hot dogs was “Hot Dog Annie’s” in Leicester, MA (get the barbecue dog…..it is soooooo good!)
I am from Worcester, and many people speak high praises for Coney Island Hot Dogs, but I consider Hot Dog Annies to be the best in the area. I think they are in Leicester. You are never sure what town you are in the backwoods. LOL
Best hotdogs on cape cod is Frank’s franks in mashpee at the cape cod children’s museum in mashpee, ma. All beef hotdogs ,ballparks and Hebrew nationals , chips & soda. Great service and lots of fixins.
The Wasses hot dog with beans is not called the Texan it is actually called the Western Dog.
Courtney’s Hot Dogs in Winslow Maine is definitely one of the best in Maine.
next time …come to Sylvia’s hot dog cart on International dr in Windsor CT…best chili dogs in CT…..Mucke brand hot dogs and local Janik kielbasa!! Open for the season on May 16 2017
By far the best hotdogs I have ever had come from Gary’s Best Hot Dogs in New Bedford Massachusetts. Their chili cheese dogs with a little fresh chopped onion and celery salt are to die for and are one of my favorite comfort foods!
I concur on Gary’s, no gimmicks just a great dog!
Yes! I knew someone else would say so. Gary’s best is the best. My kids gobble them up plain! I am a fan of the works with celery salt! Fresh and hot. We bring a table cloth and sit on the picnic tables on warm summer nights.
flos is the best by far
Did anyone else notice that on the NH and Maine locations used “real” New England hot dog rolls? Made me chuckle – thanks Yankee! Best hot dog brand ever – Schultz’s from Portsmouth!!
Larry Joe’s New England Fire Pit in Hopedale is a rare find. The huge char-broiled dogs are the top quality dogs in the whole area. Truly great!
How can you even talk about New England hot dogs and not mention Simco’s Blue Hill Ave, Mattapan. Simco’s has been legendary for ever!!
You missed the BEST ! Bolley,s, on the Augusta / Hallowell line ! (Maine)
I’m with you Jake. I drive from Portland to Augusta just to get a Bolley’s hot dog. THE BEST!
I agree, Bolley’s are awesome! Whenever I am in the area, it’s my first stop.
When I’m in MA, I try to eat at Lee’s Hot Dog Stand in Baldwinville. Foot-long dogs, New England rolls (butter-grilled, thankyouverymuch), lots of fixings. Great stuff.
I will second that comment, Baldwinville MA stand a true singularity in NorthCentral MA.
I’ve had several of these, and they all take a distant second place to the amazing Larry Joe’s New England Firepit in Mendon MA, which was inspired by the legendary and now dearly departed Boston Speed’s (which the Wall Street Journal called the best hot dog in the USA). A variation on the “White House” style hot dogs that Roosevelt reportedly served to the King and Queen of England. Can’t beat that provenance lol!
I was going to mention Boston Speed, went to his trailer at Newmarket for over 30 years, never before and never again will there be a better dog. Ezra Anderson aka Speed was the premier hot dog efficiando, I know Larry got his style of dog from Ezra and IS A DAMN GOOD DOG, nothing will ever compare to the Original Boston Speed Dog, from his home made corn relish, chili, marinated peppers n onions, to his oxymoron nickname Speed, if there were 4 people in line, you had to prepared for a 20-30 minute wait, not because it took that long to put your order together, but because the man loved to talk and we all loved to listen to him, a real sweet man, I miss him big time!! One day after going to him for years, I asked about the Speed moniker, turns out he was a track star in his college days somewhere in Virginia, at one time tagged as the fastest man on the east coast!!! So, yes Larry’s should be mentioned as well as Speedy being memorialized!!!
The People’s Pint in Greenfield has an awesome hot dog that tastes like bacon.
I use to go to Tex Barry’s Coney Island Dog on Main St. Downtown Brockton, never knew he continued on in Attleboro, will have to venture out and have a bite!
Frankies Waterbury CT the best hands down, never a disappointment
I agree it’s been more than 25 years in Waterbury and still love Frankies reminds me of Fritzes in my home town Oxford ct
DOUG’S DOGS in Marlborough, NH – popular roadside truck on Rt. 101… AMAZING dogs and homemade sodas!
my fav…the dogs on Castle Island in Southie (Boston) missed the cut 🙁
Sullivan’s on Castle Island makes no secret of the fact that they use Kayem Natural Casing hot dogs; the distinctive blue boxes are easy to spot. Can’t go wrong here.
In northern Rhode Island, Woonsocket has the best wieners. New York lunch on Main Street has the best! Their sauce along with mustard, celery salt and onions is fantabulous! I’ve been going there since the mid 60’s.
New York Lunch has the best and coldest coffee milk, too! My Dad started bringing me when I was a boy in the mid 60’s. He and I would sit on the stools.
He’d buy me two wieners and some coffee milk and would buy the same for himself. If I wanted a 3rd wiener, which I always did, he’d let me have a 3rd, but that was the limit even though I craved for more! If he only knew I’d be eating 10 at a time later in life with three large coffee milks he would not be happy! He would not approve! 🙂 lol Too bad! I think he’d approve the small flat screen TV w/ wall mount I had donated once to the restaurant? They had needed a TV for so long for take-out and seated customers near the entrance!
I don’t care where in New England you go a hot dog, steamed or grilled is delicious on a New England bun that is also steamed or grilled. I live in Florida and can’t get New England buns and boy do I miss them.
Best alternative: Buy Publix hot dog buns, slice and prepare to your liking.
Good hot dogs are easy, come on.what makes one special is a treatment or variety, like a special sauce.my favorite is the reuben dog,and Dee’s hot dogs,2 locations,in New Bedford has a mouth-watering version-sauerkraut,and a melted swiss cheese sauce with russian dressing. After tasting one of these,I was spoiled for life.
The Merritt Canteen in Bridgeport and the Super-Duper Weenie in Fairfield are great CT hot dog stands, but I also have to mention the Botsford Drive-In in Newtown, and their incredible foot-long chili dogs. Best witha side of beer-battered onion rings. Yumm!
Rawley’s in Fairfield, CT is another incredible hotdog institution. Duchess is a southern CT chain that makes great dogs as well!
Out of your flippin minds not listing Nick’s Nest in Holyoke. Since 1921 the best New England hot dogs, steamed buns, and fantastic baked beans! And you put those circus clown pink dogs on this list??? pffffht
Amen to that!
Yep, Nick’s Nest should be on the list – A real taste of home.
Nick’s Nest!!! Totally agree. What an experience.
My husband’s family came from Holyoke originally and we have always loved Nick’s! Hotdogs, Baked Beans and the most aromatic Popcorn you can imagine! You’re correct Gary, this should have been on the list! Many of the greatest places in Western MA are overlooked, very sad,
You left out George’s Hot Dog Stand in Fitchburg, MA. Best dogs in the area. Gotta have them with onion rings.
You’re RIGHT !! Grew up on Georges Hot Dogs !!!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME……JIMMIES IN WEST HAVEN (AT SAVIN ROCK)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They serve Hummel’s Hot Dogs. A Connecticut favorite. Never take a lake vacation without Hummel’s, with skins.
NICKS Grill Warren RI the best of all of them………….
Sorry ROD’s Grille
Rod’s are great, all right–this from a former Warrenite. By the way, the “New York System” has no connection whatever with New York. The inventor gave it this name as a sort of joke, since these wieners are not to be found in the Empire State. They’re as native RI as coffee milk.
When in Worcester MA, Hot Dog Heaven is Coney Island, 3 up with a birch beer soda. When in Providence RI, Hot Dog Heaven is Olnyville System, 3 with the works & a large Arizona. BUT, the the ultimate Hot Dog Heaven is going to a Rhode Island grocery store, order a couple of Saugy’s, buy a couple New England Hot Dog Buns, fry up the saugy’s, toast the buns, golden brown, Sit back & enjoy. You can almost hear, Heaven, Heaven, I’m in Hot Dog Heaven, Ooooooh Yeah !!!!! Enjoy
woah, you don’t fry those saugy’s up, you boil them to hear them snap when the skin breaks!
Deary Bros./Mike’s Stand, just off Route 12, in Putnam, CT; something of a tradition around here. Nothing exotic, but good, with toasted buns. They also have seafood and burgers. Nice setting by the river.
I moved to Texas in 1981 and still miss Nick’s Coney Island dogs in Fall River, MA. Nick’s son ran the business in the 1950s and never deviated from his father’s great recipe. I have tried to duplicate the sauce, but have never come close to matching his perfect deliciousness! We always had a Nehi with ours.
Kayem’s Old Time Best is the finast hot dog on the planet! Any business that uses them has a huge advantage. All naturally made the authentic way, no plastics!
omgosh, you got that right! My favorites use to be Essems but we can’t find them anymore, so Kayem’s deli dogs in the package (pork and beef) are absolutely “Da Bomb!”
Disappointing, my mistake I thought this was an article on New England hot dogs, not “New York System” or “Coney Island” hot dogs – neither of which appeal to me.
I love Rosie’s. Travelled all the way from California and it was on my bucket list. Made it there and loved it…
I’ve always enjoyed Guida’s drive-in on the Middletown/Meriden line! Great pepperburgers Too!!
ahhh yes the hot dogs from New England by far the best. But it’s not where but who manufactures the best. I was brought up eating Hummels hot dogs from New Haven, CT but also liked Roessler yellow tags. As a kid we went to Turks in West haven for Hummels and Jimmy’s for Roesslers. The bun yup the New England flat side by far so you could toast them and they would sit flat so you could pile the goodies on. Living in Florida and now TN. I miss them so much. To ave them ship Hummels we would need stock in Ft. Knox..so all I can do is dream and eat “stuff” here referred to as a hot dog and suffer indigestion and disappointment.
It seems to me there should be a ‘naked’ hot dog competition. The article and comments seem to be about the condiments, the rolls, and the memories. How about a flavor testing party for just the dogs themselves…grilled, steamed, or boiled? I think know which will win! (Without saying, of course, the dogs need to be made in New England.)
Agreed. We have a sauce that I think is even better than flows, and it makes any dish taste really good. We had to make our own because of allergy to some ingredient in flo’s sauce- our sauce tastes equally good on chicken, pork, hotdogs, hamburgers etc. Can’t give the recipe, but it’s made mostly with Vidalia onions, worchestershire sauce, tomatoes and a few other ingredients, and the result is a perfect condiment for several foods, especially chicken. Hto dogs are hotdogs as far as I’m concerned- it’s what is added to, ie the condiment, them that makes the world of difference. I don’t particularly like, hotdogs anymore, but put our sauce on them with mayo, and celery salt, and I’m a happy person
hot dogs & hot wieners are not the same tasting. Some places make hot dogs & other places serve wieners both are good ,but they are not alike as far as taste. I like wieners more, thou they are not made everywhere
New England Travel should know better. Hot Dogs and Weiners are not the same. Different content in the tube and are different in taste. Weiners, as many places in Rhode island spell it, can be individual 5 inch lengths or they can be cut off a long roll. You don’t do that with a hot dog. Nick’s in Fall River and Olneyville, R.I. Weiners are the best. The best hot dogs were Rosseler Red Hots at Jimmie’s in West Haven and saugy’s at Haven Bros in Providence..
What? No mention of RI’s Spike’s Junkyard Dogs? I’m lost for words…
Carol’s Lunch Box in Farmington CT is a good hot dog destination to check out.
I know everyone thinks their local stand is best, and I’m no exception. So how about Toms Long Hotdogs, in Whately, Ma? They have a wide variety of toppings, and they are all delicious, as well as soups, chili and burgers, and various Polish treats.
Capital Lunch…New Britain Ct.
Capitol Lunch in New Britain are the BEST with mustard, onions and meat sauce. You guys missed the BEST in your article.
Cappy’s is a must to be on this list. Frankie’s in Waterbury, CT would be another.
Definitely struck out by missing Capitol Lunch in New Britain, the best dogs around, mustard, onions & “sauce”…oh yea! Waterbury’s Frankie’s a solid second. Doogie’s? Really? They’re nothing special and always really skimpy with the toppings (unless they’re going to take a picture for a magazine, by the looks) I never got one dressed like the picture in this article..never!
The best dogs are from Snappy Dog in Hopkinton, MA! The homemade relishes are super! And it is woman-owned and operated.
best dogs are at Scott’s Place in Camden, Maine!!!!!! Kraut with mustard please!!
If you like red snappers, try Tomaso’s Canteen in Portland Maine…grilled on a grilled roll….then you be the judge….
You might want to check out a local street vendor who sets up seasonally as soon as spring is firmly rooted, Fred’s Franks at the head of Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield, Ma., the food is great, the people are pleasant, and outside by the lake view for a hot dog in the summer is a nice break from the every day grind.
Have to agree with other commenters, just moved back from Austin, TX to my beloved New England and Doug Dogs are the BEST ??. A food trunk in tiny Marlborough, NH on RT. 101 located in Shell Gas ⛽️ Station. Open all year round and not pricey with home made Doug’s flavor sodas too. Hmm! Almost lunch time, got to go!
folks do not confuse hotdogs & weiners ,they are not the same. The weiners are more flavorful than hotdogs they have chopped off ends. Place i know for weiners are in rhode island , prov & woonsocket Don’t mistake the two
True. We Rhode Islanders never call wieners “hot dogs.” The wiener is in a class of its own. Have to mention that although your picture of the RI wieners features French fries covered with ketchup, the preferred condiment (and the typical RI swamp Yankee way) is vinegar.
How is the White Hut in West Springfield, MA not on this list? Blasphemy.
Where is White Hut located in W.Sprgfld?
The White Hut is located on Memorial Ave in West Springfield. Come off the Memorial Bridge linking W. Spfld and Springfield or Rt 5…it is on the right, approx 1/4 mile.
Now, the Hut has changed owners and prices have gone up. Not as good as it used to be. I grew up having a dog (mustard/relish) and hamburger with cooked onions and mustard and a chocolate milk.
Everything was and still prepared by several cooks doing the dogs and burgers on a big grill. When I moved to eastern Mass and did sales for all of New England I would stop there and get my usual. The original owners were the best and always kept things the same.
Reno’s in Canton should definitely, definitely be on the list.
whaaaaat!?!?!?! No Castle Island dogs in Southie?? WTH?
You’re right, Deb….it’s Sullivan’s (Sully’s) out by the Fort on Castle Island. It’s “hot dogs with a view”!!!
When In Pittsfield Ma. , I go for 5 dogs with everything either at Teo’s Hot Dogs or the Dog Ranch are the way to go , (you choose ) Both are good !
Wow Teo’s, I didn’t know they were still there, when I worked in GE 1969 we used to go up there, the first place we ever had Chile on a hot dog, and they were smaller dogs but they were good.
In high school I order a dozen Teos dogs with a frosty cold mug of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. They were the best.
Glad to see Teo’s in Pittsfield was mentioned. Thought all was lost. Haven’t been back since ‘ 08. Fond memories. I tell people about these. I grew up going therd. Miss the old mom & pop places. ( Dare I mention Angelina’s.. I know, not hot dogs, but WOW!) Two’s would actually prepare hundreds of their dogs for me to carry on flight to relatives every summer. Class act!
Riley’s in New Britain Connecticut……that is all they serve is hot dogs but with a variation in toppings. Neat atmosphere, new and named after their dog…get it…dog!!!
Most all these hot dog places are great ‘cause they want you BACK! But the absolute best tasting hot dog I’ve ever had ( am 63) is a Deutscmacher!! Should have seen the face on a camper friend when I pleaded he try my Deutscmacher vs his “ super” Stop & Shop deli dog. An instant convert! I like them all, but only love a hot Deutschmacher!!
Does anyone know of a good hot dog on Cape Cod? We have to travel to CT to get our hot dog fix!
Not on the Cape but on the SouthShore in New Bedford on Acushnet Ave the best hotdog stand called Gary’s Best Hot Dogs…steamed ..perfect
Gary’s doesn’t have true Coney Island sauce so the best in New Bedford now is also on Acushnet Ave in the Lund’s corner area Nick’s of Fall River fame! Number two above.
The Dog House on Lower County Road in Dennis Port has amazing dogs. Believe me, I wrote a feature about Cape Cod hot dogs, including the ball park franks sold at Cape Cod Baseball League games, and The Dog House is KING!
Try Big Lenny’s in Rutland, VT. Well worth the trip.
Berlin Pizza in Berlin, CT hands down! The meat sauce and hotdogs are awesome. Should’ve been on the list
All may be OK but until you`ve had a Glaziers Michigan [northern NY state] you haven`t had a hot dog!!
But NY is not in New England despite what some people think ????
By far the best dog was the foot long with the special red sauce in Stratford Ct. it was called The Cricket, I could eat 4 of these in my prime. They have lost their lease or something and never reopened. Good news a new owner with what I understand has some old employees have re opened in a new location in Stratford. I now live in Florida but when I visit Ct I will try them, If they are half as good as the old place they will be very good.
Also try the Black Duck in Westport Ct,
Was shocked to find that Nick’s Nest, Holyoke, Ma wasn’t on the list. Sure been there a long time. Our go to for Hot Dogs
I found the quality of Nick’s Nest dogs has gone down in the past years. Something changed.
I am very shocked not to see Tex Barry’s in Attleboro on here. Flo’s is horrible that Mayo is no bueno. Go to Tex Barry’s and have the best dog ever
Larry Joe ‘s in Mendon should be on this list. Best dog I ever had.
Cindy Drive In in Granby, Mass uses Blue Seal hot dogs the best in Western Massachusetts!
You seem to have forgotten a Connecticut icon which is Frankie’s hot dogs in Waterbury, Connecticut. I’m certain that Frankie’s could top a lot of the dogs that you featured in this article
Flo`s have every year when on Vacation ,you got it right THE VERY BEST!!!
You got it right ,nothing comes close to FLO`S
Flo`s the best ever .
Spikes Junkyard Dogs in Brighton, MA. Pure beef dogs, fresh baked rolls, homemade mustard and sauerkraut.
I agree that Spike’s Junkyard Dogs should have been included. When I had been living in Rhode Island I was a regular at the Cranston franchise, at the corner of Reservoir Ave. and Park Ave. They Dogs are the most flavorful and their fresh baked rolls are 2nd to none. I would order mine with raw onions, spicy brown mustard and melted Swiss cheese. If I didn’t have to go to work I might also order chili on top as well. Although the chili dogs were messy, they’re the very best!!!
Tom`s Hot Dogs in Whately MA are the best on the planet! Foot long, steamed deliciousness. Can`t say I`m wrong until you have one.
I agree none better
Hot Dog Annie’s in Leicester, MA is my personal favorite and has been for more than 40 years! Whether it’s the traditional hot dog with mustard, onions, and relish or just ketchup, they can’t be beat. And the BBQ hotdog is the best ever! Served on lightly toasted top split buns with a bag of Wachusett chips, sitting at a picnic table outside regardless of the weather is a tradition!
Would have been nice to know what places did not make the list. In the MA Berkshires, Bob’s country kitchen, formerly known as Dopey’s had the best regular dogs. Trio’s and the Hot Dog ranch have baby boy dogs that are a must have whenever visiting…made by local meat processor Whorlley’s. Have not been back in a while, will have to try Jack’s to see how it compares.
Hot dog ranch has the best. Then Teo’s are second best . Pittsfield MA.
You’re correct. The Hot Dog Ranch on West Housatonic Street in Pittsfield has moved expanded its restaurant with baby hot dogs in a wonderful chili sauce with lots of onions. Teo’s is great too, sporting the chili sauce & mini hot dogs. Both get lots of patrons who love the baby hot dogs. Our house guests always want to visit these two restaurants for hot dogs & a brewsky!
Frankie’s Hot Dogs in Waterbury, Connecticut are the best hot dogs I have ever had. Great decor, fun place.
Frankie’s or Blackie’s two Great dogs !
I’m shocked that Nick’s Nest in Holyoke, MA, was not leading the list of Best Hot Dogs in New England. And at Nick’s Nest, the hot dog is enhanced by great buns.
I am a California girl… been here all my life. Now at 70 yrs old, I still want to visit New England, especially Brattleboro, Vermont, where my mother was from. I can see I could see all of New England just by going from one hot dog stand to another! They are popular in California, but in New England they seem to have become a culinary delight! Hope to still get there one day…
Why was Nicks Nest of Holyoke Ma left out best hot dog in New England been going there since my kids were little and my oldest is 60 and we still go there
Nick’s Nest is an all time favorite!
Natick, Ma you can get wicked hot dogs at KC’s. It’s a historical landmark.
Get 2 all around, chips and a drink and you are in heaven.
I didn’t see Braddish’s on Rte 140 in N. Grafton. They have been a staple for more than 50 years. Every kid in the neighborhood goes there at least 1 or 2 times a week (the parents about the same). Whenever we go back up there Braddish’s is the first place we hit.
And onion rings to die for!
We tried Jack’s in N. Adams while visiting the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Nov. 2019. I like frequenting small local businesses, especially those that have been around for a long period of time. I am the furthest thing from a picky eater or gourmet person and enjoy hot dogs, burgers, fries, etc. Jack’s were doing a brisk lunchtime business, but must be an acquired taste. We unfortunately were unimpressed with everything but the price. But, where the dogs were neither very good nor very large, the low prices actually made sense. Don’t want to discourage anyone, and the regulars obviously will disagree, but we found the dogs tasted gamy, buns were steamed to point of being almost soggy, fries were very small and oily.
You missed Coney Island in Worcester. Best around.
One Saturday AM…my wife surprised me with a road trip all around CT to try everyone’s HOT DOGS. It became clear as the day progressed that it wwas MUCKIES or HUMMELS (your call) but….what separated winners from losers were “the spreads” on top. Blackies has exception relish. Think back…..isn’t it really about what goes on top????
Art Bradish stand in North Grafton Ma Foot Longs and throw in the best onion rings too! And Deary Bros. Mikes Stand in Putnum Ct awesome foot longs. Both places are grilled dogs and grilled buns. Love Coney island Worcester MA also
All the others might be nice hotdogs but if you want the best go to
CAPITAL LUNCH in New Britain, CT. You may leave the city, you may leave the state, but when you come back home to New Britain you make the pilgrimage to Capital Lunch for their hot dogs.
I see several people have opined that Capital Lunch of New Britain, CT, has the best hot dogs. I’ve been there, and it isn’t the case. The best hot dog in the entire world is available at the Glenwood Drive-In on Route 10 (Whitney Ave.) in Hamden, CT. The hot dog is a 12-inch Hummel’s, one that’s crafted with an exclusive blend for their customer of about 60 years. It’s cooked over an open flame to your specifications, but having one well-done makes the classic snap from biting into crispy skin an excursion to hot dog heaven. There are others that use Hummel’s, which has become the only hot dog I’ll eat, but Glenwood also has top-quality seafood. Hamden folks know that if they want everyone in town to see their handbill for a high school reunion, it will be seen at Glenwood. Glenwood also features Kelly’s Kone Connection, for those who would like quality ice cream for dessert. I live near New Britain and I’ve had Capitol Lunch. No comparison. Go to Glenwood!
Glenwood rules. Great seafood and Kelly’s has the best ice cream in New England
You have forgotten to include George’s Coney Island on Southbridge Street in Worcester, which just celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2018. It is a classic to order “two up” (mustard, onion, celery salt, meat sauce) with a pickle, a Table Talk pie, and a can of Polar soda.
I agree with Paul. I think Yankee Magazine missed the best by not listing Coney Island in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Survey is very skewed as there was no mention of Hot Dog Annie’s in Leicester, MA or Coney Island in Worcester, MA.
Yes to both. When my children were young I could get 3 hot dogs for a dollar at Annie’s. Both places are part of the glory of Worcester County.
When I was young, Hot Dog Annie’s were 8 for a dollar!
If Ed McMahon were alive, he’d tell ya Elliot’s in Lowell, MA is Best Hot Dog in New England. Must be doing something right as was established 100 years ago this year! spent a lot of time growing up here with relatives, e.g. graduated LHS circa 1940. I can only imagine other Lowellians like Jack Kerouac, Bette Davis, Micheal Chicklis or Olympia Dukakis might concur!
Me? An ex-Lowellian who would get you off your duff to “do” Route 66 whereby hitting Albuquerque, you’d “do” the hole-in-the-wall Dog House where Breaking Bad dudes “dealt”. Besides keeping its animated neon sign of the 50’s shining, it is also infamous for its Footlong (New Mexico Red) Chile Cheese Dog with onions of which I’ve had 598 feet of ’em. Yo, best to “pair” one with an orange drink, not a cola. Eh! they take the extra time to split the dog open for that extra “flavor” from the 65ish year old grill. The Red Chile sauce has a renowned tang/piquancy and is no way near the blah brown stuff of Coney Island or what’s found in a can or so-called Tex-Mex Chili. I.e. note the “e” and “i” difference in spelling. So…saddle up or hit the road in your Vet to get your kicks on Route 66! Elsewise and RE Hot Dogs, how about The Great American Hot Dog Book by Becky Mercuri over in Buffalo or a Foodie’s take
“Chow!” as we non-Italians say!
Couldn’t agree more!!!!
Absolutely! Joe Elliots!
Snappy Dogs in Hopkinton Mass. OUTSTANDING!!!!
The Best Hot Dogs in New England
Ben’s Chili Dogs in Newport, RI. I try to swing by whenever I am up that way.
Ben’s is the place!
Arnie’s Place Concord NH Best Hot Dog in NH
Pats hot dogs in Calais, Maine. Best hotdogs ever.
Hot Dog! So many varieties, some better than the rest. Mine HAS TO BE a boiled or steamed, natural casing hotdog. Don not grill, split, or use oil I. I want to taste the meat, however chili is my favorite (not canned, runny, not meaty commercial brands). Roxie’s Roadside Food Truck in Danbury makes THE BEST homemade chili, packed with meat, real spicy, and no beans. Served on a toasted Martin’s Potato Hot Dog Roll, it’s delicious, but unfortunately it’s a spilts and grilled Old Neighborhood dog. Martin Rosol’s natural casings from New Britain would make a better choice, and the absolute best hot dog anywhere, anytime.
My vote for best hot dog goes to Casey’s Diner in Natick, MA. Awesome steamed dog’s in an intimate small & cozy diner. Casey’s first established in 1890. Go there!
Absolutely agree. We are now on four generations frequenting Casey’s!
Yummy. Get there early, the line outside is LONG!
the best weiners i have ever had are at Rod’s Grill in Warren, RI.
Flo’s is definitely the best.
At only $1.50 each, including a cold drink, you can’t beat the dogs at Costco’s! The price is cheap, but the size and flavor are worth much, much more.
Too salty compared to majority of other top leading brands.
Costco has fantastic hot dogs. Get them each time I am there
You really have to do Kips on Newport Ave in Pawtucket, RI. Fabulous is a word that comes to mind. They have been there forever and their weiners have always been my favorite!
Has anyone mentioned Fred’s Frank’s in Wakefield MA, best dogs around, order the Schnurble if you want something outstanding
Whoever wrote the best article has never been to Coney Island ? If they had , they would have known where the best really0
are ! Coney Island. Worcester
Agreed!!!! Worcester’s Coney Islands dogs are the best I have ever had , hands down!
Glaring omition! Been in business since 1919, and has changed very little. Very good hot dogs, and cheap too.
Yup! got my vote that place just celebrated it’ 100 anv. that’s right 100 years !!
The “Dog House” Dennisport MA. One w the best.
Casey’s hotdogs in Natick, MA two all around. Yum!
Walter’s Hot Dog Stand in Mamaroneck, NY. Worlds famous, Delicious. The best. The line is always long but worth the wait.
Coming into discussion late but NY I’d not New England. Casey’s in Natick gets our vote.
Who goes to New England for the hotdogs???????
LOL. My husband’s family was in Cheshire CT. Nice that Blackie’s has survived for almost 100 years BUT it’s the original WASP hot dog.
Millions of us don’t go to New England for hotdogs, we live here!
We grew up on flows hotdogs. It was like the third foodgroup in the list of the food pyramid posters. (Not really but by all rights it,shoulda been!).
I’ve been to most of the places mentioned and they are all good in their own way. This summer have been taking the grand kids around touring hot dog joints and comparing. A few other unique places are Dudley’s Dogs in Uxbridge, MA; Ed’s Weenies in Littleton. MA; Murph’s Hot Dogs in Lancaster, MA; JK’s in Danbury, CT and Sycamore Drive In in Bethel, CT.
Looking forward to this whole pandemic being over next year (i.e., vaccine) so we can do a Hot Dog Road Trip down east! (we did Route 66 last year, and except for the Dog House in Albuquerque, and some Weinerschnitzel’s in Texas, Arizona & California, nothing to compare to the places on this list, plus many additions by readers–thanks!
The only true New England hot dog is a split TOP one. Two people mentioned Doug’s Dog’s in Marlborough in NH. You HAVE to put the mustard & Cain’s relish in the bun BEFORE the dog. Sadly, Cain’s come from the midwest now. Oh, don’t forget the Moxie! Can’t get more NE than that!
Buy some Schutz’s, Maple Leaf or Schonland’s natural casing hotdogs at the deli along with a package of the split top New England hot dog rolls, boil or steam them, slop some mustard and onion in the roll, top with a dog and wash it down with a can of Moxie! Yummy and save you some big bucks.
I’ve been trying to find Maple Leaf w/casings for years. Best hot dogs ever. Research says they no longer make them. I substitute w/Boars Head, but not the same.
How in the world did you not mention the hot dogs at SULLIVANS up at Castle Island?
Wha u kidding me!!! JIMMIES @ Savin Rock, West Haven! SIMPLY DA BEST!
Grew up in West Haven near Savin Rock. Jimmy’s grilled hot dogs were the bomb! Best ever.
My favorite from summer camp days (Keewaydin on Lake Dunmore) was the My favorite from summer camp days ( Keewaydin on Lake Dunmore) was A&W root beer stand on stouter 7 south of Middkebury, VT.
Rods Grille in Warren, RI!! Best Coney Island hot dogs I have ever had!!!
Where’s Hot Dog Annie’s
Sam’s in North Providence, RI has the best!
My favorite which wasn’t mentioned is Coney Island in Worcester. Great meat sauce and absolutely delicious hot dogs. Very surprised it wasn’t listed.
Joan C., Sandwich, MA
Take Nicks in Fall River,Ma. They are AWFUL and the place is so dirty. That was the worst coney island dog I have ever tried . Tears ago they were good ,but they have really gone down hill
This has a lot of older comments so I may have already posted, but I still say Lee’s Hot Dog Stand in Baldwinville Mass!
Amen!!!
Some one Commented on Coney Island Hot Dogs Worcester Ma. how could this place be missed this Icon it only been there since 1918 I think just the fact it has been around for more than 100 years tells me those dogs must be pretty good I have eaten my fair share Yummy !!!! Taste Test Complete …
The best dogs are at Bid Daddy’s hot dog cart in Copley Square, Boston. Probably not open because of COVID.
When one has to munchies from legal weed and feel the need to fix it,head to Attleboro ma for Tex Barry’s,
Make it yourself with a split top roll, boiled Ball Park Frank, baked beans and ketchup on top. Just like Grandma use to make! ????
I’m glad to see Doogie’s on the top of your list for best hot dogs in New England. But I would like to inform you that the Doogie hot dogs are not made at Rosol Meats. They are in Fact made in Bloomfield, CT at Mitty’s LLC. The original Grote and Weigel, Mucke Brand hot dogs. We are a proud Partner with Doogie’s! http://www.mittysfood.com
Judging by the photos, only the dogs of Maine origin are served in New England style split top buns. Just sayin’…
I’m jumping on the Coney’s in Worcester bandwagon as well. my advice: Order Two dogs “up”, a chocolate milk and a bag of Wachusett potato chips and you’ll be right as rain!
I am from Fall River and grew up going to Nick’s at state line to Tiverton,RI. Would go with my parents sometimes eating inside but often doing a take out. As a kid I loved watching the guy putting hot dogs all the way up his arm and adding those wonderful toppings. I still go when I am home visiting
best ones are NY System in RI. Fall River and Attleboro copy the RI weiners. BTW,
weiners are a special type of hot dog with unique combination of meats.
Whenever my dad would bring the family back to his hometown of Burlington from the various AF bases we were stationed at, he would make a point of visiting Charley’s Red Hots to get some dogs!
Why do you continually & repeatedly leave OUT Jimmies at Savin Rock, West Haven??
Its criminal to leave out George’s Coney Island in Worcester. In addition to having a most-righteous Coney dog, it sports the absolute best neon sign, with mustard dripping, in a style as timeless as the restaurant itself.
Capitol Lunch in New Britain, CT
Dogs made by Martin Rosol just around the corner. Famous meat sauce (not a chili) is a must.
CAPITAL LUNCH, New Britain CT. How in the world could you overlook them? https://www.capitollunch.com/
You forgot Rawleys in Fairfield CT. It is Martha Stewart’s favorite hot dog joint…
Best hot dogs? Sully’s, Castle Island, South Boston
