BEST LAKESIDE LUXURY:
INN AT SHELBURNE FARMS, Shelburne

Country ease meets Gilded Age opulence. Many guestrooms in the Tudor-style mansion overlooking Lake Champlain feature furnishings original to the Webb family, who summered here on a 1,400-acre model farm that today supplies meats, dairy, and produce to the inn’s elegant restaurant. Rates: from $320 with private bath; $155 with shared bath. Cottages/houses: from $265. 1611 Harbor Road. 802-985-8498; shelburnefarms.org

BEST LINCOLN LINK:
HILDENE, Manchester

Presidential son Robert Todd Lincoln built his Manchester summer retreat here in 1905. Home to Lincoln descendants until 1975, this Georgian Revival mansion features family furnishings, a 1,000-pipe organ, landscaping by an Olmsted protégé, and a restored 1888 Pullman rail passenger car, a legacy of Lincoln’s presidency of the firm. 1005 Hildene Road. 802-362-1788; hildene.org

BEST LEGENDARY EMPORIUM:
THE VERMONT COUNTRY STORE, Weston

In 1946, writer Vrest Orton set out to re-create the ambience of old-time country stores. Setting up shop in Weston, he stocked useful goods in a penny-candy-and-potbelly-stove atmosphere. The stove and candy are still here—along with everything from flannel nighties to classic toys. 657 Main St. Also Route 103, Rockingham. 802-824-3184; VermontCountryStore.com

BEST OLD-TIME CHEESEMAKER:
CROWLEY CHEESE FACTORY, Mount Holly

Winfield Crowley began making cheese in his kitchen in 1824, and in 1882 opened his “factory,” a post-and-beam building where visitors can see cheese being made just as it was in Winfield’s day, using his same method and recipe. 14 Crowley Lane. 802-259-2340; crowleycheese.com

BEST IN-TOWN INN:
GREEN MOUNTAIN INN, Stowe

Inns aplenty dot rural Vermont, but this plush hostelry anchors the state’s most famous small town. A 180-year hospitality tradition is enhanced by fully equipped apartments and townhouses, an outdoor heated pool, and fine informal dining. Stowe’s shops, restaurants, and the Vermont Ski Museum are steps away. Rates: from $139. Apartments and townhouses: from $199. 18 Main St. 802-253-7301; greenmountaininn.com
