Yankee Magazine‘s fall photo contest is the most popular one we host, and each year our readers submit hundreds of stunning photos. After careful consideration, we’ve narrowed it down to five images that stand out from the rest. Here are the five photos that made it into the finals.
Congratulations to the finalists and a warm thanks to all who entered our 2014 fall photo contest!
Northeast Kingdom by Thomas MitchellJudges’ Comments: Getting down on the ground gives a unique perspective to this frame with colorful orange, red, and yellow leaves scattered across the field of green grasses in the foreground. The softness of the fog creates interesting layers of trees and architecture in the distance.

Birch Strand by Al C.Judges’ Comments: The combination of angles and graphic lines creates an almost abstract canvas of lines and color. We love the birch trunks in the foreground and the texture of the leaves and the layers of color and light in the grasses.

Warm Embrace by Alex AtwoodJudges’ Comments: The simplicity of a single oak leaf awash in soft sunlight drew us to this shot. The pleasing focus and tones, color, shadows and light speaks to the beauty of the changing season. It calls to mind those last warm days of early autumn.

Boardwalk in Fall by Jacquelynn BeginaJudges’ Comments: The colors are not typical of autumn in terms of really bold colors. The subtleties of the season are seen in the grasses with the weathered board path leading your eye into the scene which disappears and makes the viewer wonder what is around the corner.

Moosehead Lake by Michael WhitmanJudges’ Comments: The wisps of mist lifting off the lake provide a nice contrast to the colorful backdrop of vibrant leaves. This is the autumn in New England that visitors envision.
