My wife, then girlfriend, and I have been walking along the Marginal Way ever since 1963, when I spent the spent the summer between my junior and senior years in college as a waiter at Ogunquit’s Cliff House. It draws us back for a visit every summer, if only for a day, so that we may once again enjoy the beauty of the Atlantic’s waves crashing against the shore, and savor as well the lobster at Barnacle Billy’s in Perkins Cove, which opened for business that same magical summer of 1963. Nearby is the Ogunquit Museum of Art, which offers not only some beautiful paintings by Maine artists but also striking views of the Atlantic and the rocks below.
The Marginal Way is one of my all time favorite seaside walk. I have been going there for over fourteen years now, and it just feels like a blessing that restores your energy and peace. We often stop at the Rose Cove in the evening to sit by the fire and have dessert during the summer and fall.
