Revolutionary Tea

I read your article about the Boston Tea Party tea chest (November/December, p. 52) and thought you’d enjoy this absolutely true story. A few years ago my parents went to England, and my mother went gift shopping at Fortnum & Mason’s. The salesman was very helpful—he helped arrange shipping, and translated prices, and gave information about import duties. My mother picked up a canister of Earl Grey tea and asked about import duties. The salesman drew himself up stiffly and said,“Madam, ever since that unfortunate incident in the harbor of Boston there has been no tax on tea.”

Only in New England: Unsung Pilgrims

Karen GutekunsMy grandmother traced her family tree back to the Mayflower…told a man named Jonathan Hamilton French, our ancestor, came here on it…but she also commented that a lot of prisoners were sent here that way! lo

Dorothy Lara Cute and true, no doubt! Wished the rest of my nine times great-grandparents were parodied though! Myles Standish was my ten times great-grandfather; Hopkins, Soule, Cooke, Allerton and Warren were all nine times great-grandparents of mine— also Robert Cushman! Slim pickings for a mate in 1600s Massachusetts.

Maine Potato Donuts

Patrick Littel OK, a new doughnut recipe to try! Although our Yankee mother never made these, we did have potatoes everyday, except Monday (that was Irish spaghetti night). Even though we didn’t get these, we did get potato pancakes. Not the same, but delicious nonetheless.

Dawn Byland I have to go home! I am so hungry hearing what my Maine family plans for meals. NM does not understand. “Do you want red or green with that?” They even make jelly out of peppers. I am so home sick.

Question of the Month

From lighthouses to lobster, what’s your favorite New England icon?

Take our New England Icons Poll to answer. We’ll publish reader responses in the April issue of Yankee Plus!

In the December issue of YankeePlus we asked: When the weather turns cold, what soup do you find yourself craving? This being New England, the winner wasn’t all that surprising.

Instagrammer and Australian native, Rachael Mullins, found a reason to celebrate one of New England’s most delicious exports. Not that there has to be a reason.

Pumpkin pancakes with real Vermont maple syrup. Oh, and a pot of hot chocolate that came with a full mug of cream and chocolate topping. #godblessamerica #vermont #newengland #newenglandfall #mynewenglandfall #yankeemagazine #roadtrip #pancakes #pumpkinpancakes #maplesyrup
