All varieties of vinegar (white, cider, etc.) contain about 5 percent acetic acid. For a stronger solution, you can boil down bottled vinegar to make it more concentrated. Just remember: The stronger the solution, the more powerful the solvent — and the more dangerous it is to handle.
To loosen a rusted nut or bolt when you have no penetrating oil, soak a rag in a cola drink, club soda, or cider vinegar, then leave the wet rag on the nut for about 1 hour or until the nut can be loosened. Repeat if necessary.
When closing up a summer cottage, place shallow pans of cider vinegar under beds and in closets. This will keep rooms from smelling stale come spring.

Here’s a restorative drink to pass around to a work crew on a hot day. Old-timers call it switchel. Mix 1 gallon of water, 2-1/2 cups of sugar, 1 cup of dark molasses, 1/2 cup white or cider vinegar, and 2 teaspoons of ground ginger.
