Serve toasted or plain, with peanut butter, jam, or cream cheese.
2 packages dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1-1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup wheat germ
1 cup raisins
1 cup peeled, chopped apple
4 to 5 cups flour
Dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside. Scald milk, remove from heat, and stir in sugar and salt. Pour into bread bowl and, when cool, add yeast and egg. Beat in wheat germ, raisins, and apple. Add flour, 1 cup at a time, to form a stiff dough. Turn out onto floured board and knead until smooth. Place in buttered bowl, turn to grease top, cover, and let rise until doubled. Punch down and place in 2 greased 9-inch loaf pans. Cover and let rise until doubled. Bake in preheated 375° oven 30 to 35 minutes.
