Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies

The fresh orange gives a wonderful flavor and provides a nice twist on a traditional recipe. If you like, mix all the other ingredients in a food processor, then add the chocolate chips and nuts by hand at the end.

Yield

6 dozen

Ingredients

1 cup (2 sticks) margarine or butter, at room temperature
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons white sugar
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
Grated zest of 1 orange
2 cups all-purpose white flour (or substitute part whole-wheat pastry flour)
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Juice of 1 orange
1 to 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease 2 baking sheets.

In a mixing bowl, cream together the margarine and sugars. Add the salt, egg, and zest and beat well. Sift together the flour and soda. Add to the creamed mixture with the orange juice, mixing well. Stir in the chips and nuts. Drop by the spoonful onto the greased baking sheets.

Bake for 10 minutes or until lightly browned on the edges. Remove the cookies to wire racks to cool completely.
