1 full cup old-fashioned oatmeal
1/2 cup molasses
1-1/4 teaspoons asalt
1 yeast cake
1 tablespoon sugar
2 cups boiling water
2 full tablespoons butter
3-4 cups sifted flour
Dissolve the yeast cake in a little tap water, and sprinkle the sugar on top until it rises. In a large bowl mix together the oatmeal and molasses and salt. Boil the water, dissolve the butter in it and add to the oatmeal. Sift in the flour until no more can be added, when partly cool add the yeast and mix well. Let rise in a warm place free from drafts for almost 2 hours or until doubled. in bulk. Knead on a floured board and put in 2 greased pans to rise a second time. When doubled, bake in a 350 degrees F oven for about 40 minutes. Remove to a cooling rack and brush with butter. This recipe may be used to make rolls, too. Shape them accordingly.
