GIngered Apple Cider, Mulled Wine & Apple Chips

4 bottles medium-bodied red wine (such as Merlot or Pinot Noir)
5 cinnamon sticks, plus extra for garnish
1 orange, studded with about 20 whole cloves, then quartered and seeded
1 cup sugar
Fresh orange slices
Mix all ingredients in a large pot (or slow cooker) over low heat. Simmer gently at least 30 minutes before serving. (Don’t let it boil; once it boils, it spoils.) Add extra sugar if you prefer a sweeter wine.
Garnish with orange slices, orange peel, and/or and cinnamon sticks and serve in wineglasses or clear teacups.
