Mother Lancaster’s Sugar Cookies

These will keep well, if you hide them!

Yield

Makes 15 dozen.

Ingredients

1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar mixed with 3 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets. Cream shortening and add sugar. In separate bowl combine eggs, milk, and vanilla. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Alternately beat egg mixture and sifted dry ingredients into creamed mixture. If dough is very sticky at this point, add a bit more flour. Roll dough into cylinder about 1-1/2 to 2 inches thick. (Store dough in the refrigerator or freezer if you’re not ready to bake the cookies.) Slice cookies very thin, place on greased cookie sheet, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, and bake 12 to 15 minutes.
