Molasses Cookies

“I always have a loaf pan filled with molasses cookie mixture in my refrigerator. Whenever I need a dozen, I just slice them off the loaf and bake them.

Yield

Makes 3-4 dozen.

Ingredients

1 cup molasses
1/2 pound butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 cup hot water
4 cups flour
2 teaspoons salt
1-1/2 teaspoons ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon allspice
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

Bring molasses to boil. Remove from stove and melt butter in molasses. Place 1 cup sugar in mixing bowl. Add soda to hot water and dissolve. Add to molasses and pour over the sugar in bowl (molasses will froth over). Mix well. Sift flour, salt, and spices together. Add to molasses mixture and mix well. Put in loaf pan lined with waxed paper and refrigerate overnight. Cut dough thin. Bake at 325 degrees F for 12 to 15 minutes on well-greased cookie sheet. Remove from sheet immediately.

  1. I love these cookies. I lost the recipe and was so happy when I found it again. I’ll warn you, they are a hard crisp cookie but that makes them good for shipping as gifts. The flavor is amazing.
