Kids from miles around appear at Hildur’s house on Halloween, looking for this treat that they’ve come to expect.
1 tablespoon butter
2 cups sugar
2/3 cup milk
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped walnuts, or 1 heaping tablespoon peanut butter (optional)
Melt butter in a heavy saucepan. Add sugar, milk, and chocolate, and stir constantly until chocolate is melted. Boil for 13 minutes and remove from heat. Add vanilla (and walnuts or peanut butter) and beat until creamy and mixture begins to sugar slightly around the edge of the pan. Pour at once into a buttered 8-inch square pan, cool slightly, and mark into squares.
