Gingersnaps

“This is a great recipe for teaching small children how to make their first cookies. The cookies come out about silver-dollar-size and little ones can eat a bunch of them.” –Sugar Hill Inn, Franconia, New Hampshire

Yield

Makes 3 dozen

Ingredients

3/4 cup shortening
1 egg
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup dark molasses
2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons ginger
1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon salt
Sugar for rolling

Instructions

Combine shortening, egg, 1 cup sugar, and molasses in bowl. Sift flour and other dry ingredients into another bowl. Fold dry ingredients into wet mixture and beat. Form dough into small balls like marbles. Roll in sugar and bake on cookie sheet in oven at 350 degrees F for about 15 minutes.
