When it comes to classic New England farms, one Gilded Age “ornamental farm” is as picture-perfect as they come. In this season one segment from “Weekends with Yankee” (episode 108), Richard and Amy are at Shelburne Farms in Shelburne, Vermont, on the shores of Lake Champlain. Founded in the mid-1880s, the property is now a thriving working farm and nonprofit education center for sustainability in a perfect rural Vermont setting. It’s fascinating to see the dairy farm and expansive cheddar cheesemaking operation, however, the true stars of the show might be the herd of beautiful “gentle giant” Brown Swiss cows.
