Make a Window-Washing Solution

Wash dirty windows with a solution of ½ cup ammonia and 1 gallon hot water. If the windows are greasy (in the kitchen, for instance) or smoky, add 2 cups rubbing alcohol to the water.

Wash Windows without Leaving Lint Behind

If you’ve cleaned windows with newspaper, you know how terrific it is. But did you know that timing is everything? The best newspaper to use has been around for 2 days or more. Why? The ink on the pages is completely dry, which means you’ll be less likely to end up with black hands, and the paper will clean much more effectively. If you must clean your windows and can’t wait for your newspaper to dry, reach into the pantry for some coffee filters. They make dandy cleaners for glass surfaces and mirrors in the house. Best of all, they remove streaks and smudges without leaving any lint behind. If you aren’t comfortable cleaning with anything other than paper towels, invest in a clean blackboard eraser to rub over your windows after you clean them. The eraser will eliminate streaks and leave behind a shiny finish.
