Half the fun of shirred eggs is how easy it is to mix and match the other ingredients, depending on what you’ve got on hand or what extras your brunch guests might prefer. Try a few variations and see what new favorites you’ll discover. With a dish so simple and versatile, your only limit is your supply of eggs!
  • Not a bacon fan? Instead, try arranging slices of ham, a few spoonfuls of chunky homemade or jarred tomato sauce, or crispy nests of frozen shredded hashbrowns around the ramekins or muffin cups for an extra-artful presentation.
  • A spoonful of sautéed baby spinach and thinly sliced mushrooms is a tasty vegetarian option, while crumbled chorizo or breakfast sausage is sure to satisfy meat-lovers. By swapping out the Parmesan for hearty Cheddar, nutty Gruyère, or tangy goat cheese, the list of possible flavor combinations gets even longer.
  • As a garnish, you can snip and sprinkle fresh herbs for seasonal flavor (as noted in our recipe at left), or try toppping your eggs with a few shakes of your favorite hot sauce.
