Allergic to garlic? Fate worse than death! You have my condolences. If other members of the onion family are okay, shallots would be a good substitute in almost all situations; just use a slightly larger quantity. If all onions are on the forbidden list, the best thing to do is look for recipes that have lots of other strong flavors, so you can simply leave the garlic out. There isn’t really anything that tastes like garlic except its very close relatives. (The leaves of garlic mustard, Alliaria officinalis, a fairly common weed, smell like garlic when you crush them, but many find the flavor disagreeable.)

Thank you for including the info on substituting garlic. I too am allergic to garlic and have found many others that are also, nevermind many people that just don’t like it. The comment about fate worse than death is of course a commentand their opinion but that is the attitude that society has and gives to those of us when we are just trying to eat out in a restaurant. Allergies are very serious and of course much more prevalent than ever before but the everyday stress we go through as do other allergy sufferers is very frustrating and sometimes degrading.Thank you for taking the time to read my response and thank you for the awesome Yankee info you share.
Pleasantly, Dawn
