When I was a boy growing up in New Hampshire, my family made a regular late summer trip to Maine’s Moosehead Lake to stay at a large camp a friend of ours owned. It was off the grid in every way: accessible only by boat, lacking electricity, no running water. Time there became a continuous stretch of swimming, eating, and of course, reading. Even for a kid who liked to move, our quiet August vacations up north became something I looked forward to each summer.
I guess that’s why I still equate this time of year with sitting by some kind of water and nose diving into something good to read. I know I’m not alone.
That’s why I’m happy to share this new issue with you. It’s jam-packed with good content—stories and photos, audio interviews and videos. From our excerpt from the excellent new biography of the adventure skier, Doug Coombs, to a moving portrait of a race horse jockey; from an inviting look at the work of Vermont painter, Jane Davies, to an engaging interview with retired Olympic runner, Joan Benoit Samuelson, our August issue gives you every reason to kick back and make these dog days of summer extend a little longer.
