It is said that home is where the heart is, but the nearest hut will do just fine when deep in the woods of the Appalachian Trail. In this season 2 segment of “Weekends with Yankee” (episode 206), Richard is in Jefferson, New Hampshire, to visit one of the eight huts along the Appalachian trail and to meet the Appalachian Mountain Club “hut croos,” the hardworking young men and women who trek food and supplies up the steep trails. On the trail, hikers may come for the sights, but they often stay for the community found within the cozy huts.
