There’s so much great pizza in New England that narrowing a list down to the best pizza in every state means overlooking a lot of excellent pies. But the following spots are so truly exceptional that any real pizza lover must pay them a visit posthaste.

First, a quick history: New Englanders have been enjoying great pizza ever since the first large waves of Italian immigrants began selling hot pies on the streets of cities like New York, Chicago, and Boston at the turn of the last century. Gennaro Lombardi is credited with running the first American pizzeria, beginning at his New York grocery store in 1897 and later at the pizzeria Lombardi’s in 1905. However, an October 4, 1903, article in the Boston Journal offers the following gem:

Scattered through North and Prince streets and other portions of the Italian colony where Neapolitans congregate are occasional little shops with the words “Pizze Cavuie” on the windows. The words mean simply “hot cakes” in the Neapolitan dialect, but only a traveler would know that the pizze are one of the famous products of Naples, eaten by rich and poor, high and low, and dutifully partaken of by every tourist as one of the features that must be “done” in order to say that one has seen Naples…

So maybe pizza hit New England’s shores before New York’s. Maybe it was simultaneous. When it comes to food history, important moments tended to happen without official scribes present.

Now … on to our picks!

Where to Find the Best Pizza in Every New England State

Best Pizza in Connecticut: Sally’s Apizza

You can’t write about pizza in Connecticut without starting in New Haven, and of all the excellent spots serving apizza — the traditional local moniker for Neapolitan-style pies, pronounced “a-BEETS” — we’re partial to Sally’s for its thin, charred-at-the edges crust; its generous toppings (if you’re feeling ambitious, try the bacon and onion); and its zippy red sauce. It’s worth noting that Sally’s has recently been sold, after having been owned by the Consiglio family for more than 80 years, but all indications are that the new crew will stay the course.

Best Pizza in Maine: Slab

Neapolitan-style thin-crust pizza may be enjoying an extended moment in the spotlight, but Slab’s thick Sicilian pies are a reminder that the world of pizza contains delicious multitudes. The oil-enriched crust is bubbly and tender, topped with rivulets of tangy-sweet sauce and melted mozzarella and provolone. Sure, you can add other toppings, but try the original first. It’s perfection.

Best Pizza in Massachusetts: Area Four

It takes 30 hours of fermentation and a 13-year-old sourdough starter for the pizza crust at Area Four to develop its signature tang and a shatteringly crisp exterior that belies the tender, chewy interior. This crust is so good we’d eat it plain. But then we’d be missing out on one of the best clam and bacon pies in New England, not to mention the earthy mushroom-fontina-gremolata blend. You can find Area Four in Kendall Square and Technology Square in Cambridge.

Best Pizza in New Hampshire: Alley Cat

It’s not just the Alley Cat’s extra-crisp crust — which holds up even under a blanket of toppings like cheese and pepperoni or barbecue chicken and red onion — that earns our praise. Nor is it the charming hole-in-the-wall vibe of this downtown Manchester joint. The prices are refreshingly restrained prices, too.

The Best Pizza in Rhode Island: Al Forno

Best Pizza in Rhode Island: Al Forno

Think back to pizza as we knew it before Al Forno. When George Germon and Johanne Killeen opened their restaurant in Providence in 1980, they introduced grilled pizza to New Englanders, launched the careers of future luminaries like Ken Oringer and Suzanne Goin, and drew our attention away from the pillow-crusted pies that had long defined the genre. It was a watershed moment, a game-changer, and it’s well worth remembering that these rustic delights are still on the menu, still made with the best seasonal ingredients, and still fantastic.

Best Pizza in Vermont: American Flatbread Burlington Hearth and Brewery

Yes, it’s a chain, but it’s not a chain-chain. And the crowds lining up on St. Paul Street in Burlington (and at sister locations in Middlebury, Stowe, Waitsfield, and West Dover) are a testament to the quality of these handmade pies baked in hand-built wood-fired oven and topped with local cheeses, house-made sausage, and organic red sauce. There’s beauty in watching them get made, and even more beauty in the eating.

  1. It appears that you haven’t been to Cubbers in Bristol. VT. Their Pizza is fantastic. They have great traditional pizzas and some really great combinations. Try the June Bug pie!

    1. I lived in Bristol for years. I like Cubber’s, but…meh. Their pizza is pretty mediocre. They have a few awesome sandwiches though…

  2. Having grown up in New Haven there is no question that Pepe’s has the best pizza in Connecticut. Sally’s is similar ,but not better !

  3. How could you feature a place ‘outside’ of the North End! Pizza Regina is the original and the best! Kendall square, really???

    1. I disagree that Cockadoodle Pizza is anywhere near the best. It’s not bad; it’s just okay. The cheese is sometimes gluey.

  4. A must try & possibly the best in Vermont is PIECASSO in beautiful STOWE, VT. Its a must do if ever passing thru Stowe – believe me, you will not be dissappointed. Plus now its been completely renovated and is gorgeous – but the PIZZA, Oh the PIZZA !!!

  5. Grand Pizza in Clinton,Madison is the best. Modern Pizza runs a close second but Grand is what it is GRAND. The original Grand Pizza was located in pizza heaven New Haven

  6. You should consider an article on the many Greek families around New England who make a medium-thick pizza with a unique taste and texture. Often they live above the restaurant. A great one is Village Pizza in Greenfield, MA.

    1. I absolutely agree. I grew up eating pizza from a local Greek own pizzeria and it is the pizza I will always prefer.

  7. At the other end of Massachusetts in Pittsfield, don’t miss Berkshire Mountain Bakery’s sour dough pizza. So good.

  8. Just returned from a trip to down east Maine and stopped in Portland for the night. Had thin crust pizza at otto’s, it was wonderful! My mouth is watering! Think I will try Al Forno’s. On another note, we stopped At McCloons because of your vote for the best lobster roll in Maine. Next time you might mention that it is quite a confusing 9 miles to find it, not sure it was any better then Red Eats, less expensive and no long lines, blueberry pie was also yummy!

    1. Since moving to Portland, ME six years ago, Ottos is my fave! Usually the 4 cheese pizza, add pepperoni.
Down in Providence this weekend and reading through comes to find suggestions which brought me to your comment from a few years ago.

  9. I’d like to suggest an off beat place – Rick’s Tavern on Rt 30 just outside Newfane, VT. My husband and I were doing work on our home in Newfane and finished late (8 pm), and decided to find somewhere to eat. Rick’s was about to close, but we must have looked pathetic and needy, so they stayed open for us and gave us their short menu. We noticed pizza made with a homemade dough. My husband is Italian and we go to Italy every year, and we both pronounced these pizzas among the best we have had. Better than the more pretentious Fire and Ice in Brattleboro, even with their wood fired oven. We no longer have the property, but we intend to make a special pilgrimage to Rick’ s when we’re next in the states.

  10. How did I know the Massachusetts winner would be from Boston. Sometimes Yankee acts as if nothing exists west of I-495.

  11. Also in Vermont, Goodmans in Ludlow. All fresh ingredients wood fired. Expect a one hour wait on takeout during ski weekends. Their frozen cheese and garlic, available in local stores, is probably the best frozen pizza you’ll ever try. On Friday they have specials from the farmers market. In Connecticut, Pepe’s.

  12. You definitely need yo stop into Mama Mia’s Pizza in Plymouth, Ma…..absolutely fantastic pizza!

  13. Sally’s in Conn.and Slab in Maine have always been my favorites but Modern Pizza in New Haven Conn. is also as good as it gets

  14. Best thing crust

    BB

Best thing crust is Sweet Tomatoes in Sandwich Ma. I wait a full year and do not eat any other pizza.
    Best

  15. In Connecticut Sallys is great but Modern Pizza in New Haven and Saccos in Torrington should be recognized.

    1. Agreed! Modern over Sally’s any day of the week. Personally, I think Sally’s is the weakest of the “big three” in New Haven.

    2. I would also recommend Saccos in Torrington, CT. Or even the Berkshire in Torrington. I’ve been to Sally’s, and Pepe’s in New Haven and sadly with the prices that they charge you can only eat about 3/4 of the pizza because sadly, the rest is burnt.

      1. Piccolo Market in Moultonborough, NH. The best NY Style pizza in New England. Always fresh and always wonderful … try the short rib pizza!!!

  16. Alfornos in Old Saybrook, CT has incredible pizza and they make and sell their bread at the restaurateur too.

  17. YES on Sally’s, all day, every day. NO on American Flatbread in Burlington. Anyone who lives here knows that the original in Waitsfield is significantly better, but still isn’t nearly as good as Folino’s.

  18. IIRC, Yankee rated Parker Pie the #2 pizza in New England several years back. It’s still by far the best pizza in VT. Far better than NE FlatBread! I can’t believe no one mentioned it. And I always thought Pepe’s was the best in CT (Sal’s is a spinoff). And I’m surprised no one mentioned Santarpio’s, the one that usually competes with Regina for #1 in Boston. TripAdvisor just rated Regina #1 in the nation.

  19. I normally do not care much for Pizza (open faced cheese sandwiches) and rarely order it. There is one exception however and that is Pat’s Pizza in Orono, Maine. I always order it with double cheese, anchovies, jalapeños and pepperoni. I always order it when I go to Orono which is fairly often because we have a house there. Their ingredients are always fresh (many places use canned jalapeños and don’t understand what double cheese means) and the result is superb.

  20. Cantore’s in Lebanon, NH. Great NY style pizza. Very hard to find real New York style pizza in Northern VT, so we go whenever we are in the area.

  21. Whenever we vacation on the Nrth Shore we must go to Riverview in Ipswich at least once. The rest of the year we yearn in Ohio for one of those pizzas. The restaurant is always crowded and they do not waste replenishing the fine china. You are given a piece of waxed paper to put your slice of pizza on. A fun, unpretentious place with the best pizza our family has ever eaten.

  22. Santarpio’s is E. Boston and Rte.1 Peabody, Ma. and Prince House of Pizza also Rte. 1 in Saugus, Ma. are great pizzas.

  23. Everybody always goes with Sally’s or Pepe’s as best in CT. They’re good but there are better ones. Modern in New Haven, GiGi’s in Milford, Roseland in Derby are all better, and I am sure there are some great pizzas in off-the-beaten-path places that I haven’t found yet.

  24. A lot to argue here (in a polite way).
In Massachusetts, I would tie between The Pizza House in Great Barrington and The Lynwood Cafe in Randolph.
In Rhode Island, it’s Caserta’s. No doubt on that one.
In New Hampshire, Athens V in Keene is the best pie up there, and one of the best in New England.

      1. Absolutely. Caserta’s changed years ago, that old time reputation is picked up by Federal Hill tourists and college students who rave about it. Rosa Mia in Johnston, RI has great pizza now, what my grandma used to call a tomato pie.

    1. Come on now folks. All this thin crust burnt NYC wannabee pizza is fine occasionally, but in New England Greek is King! Hurry and get it, as all of the coal fired, “same as the others” places are popping up everywhere.

  25. Looooove Casertas in Providence and Sally’s in New Haven!!!!!! Looooove PIZZA so I will be trying all the mentions!

  26. Every time I go back to Connecticut – it’s pizza time at the Berkshire in Torrington! Never had a bad one in all the years – even while living there!

  27. It does my heart good to see the suggestions in Torrington, CT. When I grew up there, Berkshire was a bar. My Dad used to go down to get the pizza. How smart they were to put in tables and make it into a family restaurant. I’m in CA now and go to the Berkshire every time I get back there. Feels like home.

  28. Catanzaro’s in Cranston, RI is my choice for the best. It has also been voted the best for the last 2/3 years.

  29. It is straight up offensive that Ida is not listed for VT. It’s the best in that state and it’s not even a conversation. Whoever put this list together clearly has not been!

  30. Best Pizza in Massachusetts are pretty much any of the Bar Style Pizza on the southshore. Lynwoods in Randolph is the GOAT, but you have Buddys Villa in Easton, Poopsies in Marshfield, Venus in Whitman, The Riviera in Bridgewater, The Town Spa in Easton, Olde Colonial Cafe in Norwood and others.

  31. Our favorite was always PICCO in the South End Boston, but recently moved north and discovered Frankie Slice in Peabody, which is great pizza.

  32. “Best” pizza! Lol. What’s the criteria? Have all the pizza establishments been tried? How about “great tasting” pizza in each state. “Best” is definitely subjective at best! Lol

  33. Pizzeria Regina is always my go to in the Boston area. Santarpio’s in E. Boston 2nd
Feeling Sicilian pizza? Leone’s in Somerville or Umberto’s in the North End.

    1. By far in Boston my two favorites are thin crust Santarpios, simple cheese pizza is incredible and Sicilian style Umbertos HANDS DOWN! Nothing fancy, simply great flavor sauce, cheese and crust. Amazing!

  34. When you’ve grown up with all the great CT pizza available, all others pale in comparison. It’s the only thing I regret about moving north, neither VT or ME have anything close to the pizza of my past life!
