A legendary coastline and postcard-perfect small towns give midcoast Maine a feel all its own. With its gorgeous harbor and lively downtown, Camden is one of the area’s starring attractions. A popular year-round home for writers and retired intelligence officers, Camden is one of only two places on the Atlantic seaboard where the mountains meet the sea — which makes it a popular tourist destination, too. Planning a visit? Read on for a selection of some of our favorite Camden, Maine, hotels and inns.

Camden, Maine | Hotels & Inns Guide

THE NORUMBEGA INN

Eleven luxurious rooms and suites await guests at this high-end B&B, which is located in a stone castle built in 1886 by the inventor of the duplex telegraph. The property was added to the National Historic Registry in the early 1970s and converted to a B&B in 1984. Gas fireplaces and sweeping views of Penobscot Bay adorn most of the rooms. Named a 2014 Yankee Editors’ Pick for “Best Castle by the Sea.”

WHITEHALL

Though the core of Whitehall may be an 1834 sea captain’s home, the building has progressively accreted rooms since becoming an inn in 1901. Reimagined in 2015 as a chic coastal getaway, the 36-room hotel and its rambling porches sprawl across green lawns between the rounded peak of Mount Battie and the lapping blue waters of Penobscot Bay. Touches like aged barn board and grass-cloth wall coverings produce a breezy contemporary decor that still echoes the leisurely rusticators of a century past. Named a 2018 Yankee Editors’ Pick for “Best Boutique Hotel.”

CAMDEN HARBOUR INN

This Relais & Châteaux property puts midcoast Maine on full display. The front-row views include both mountains and water. No, a stay here isn’t cheap, but the amenities — on-site restaurant Natalie’s, champagne breakfast, turndown service with gourmet chocolates — make it memorable. Natalie’s was named a 2019 Yankee Editors’ Pick for “Best Special-Occasion Splurge.”

  1. I would also recommend the lovely Inn at Sunrise Point. It is a Camden Maine bed and breakfast with beautifully appointed rooms, delicious breakfast and stunning ocean views!

  2. These are all beautiful places to stay, but this short article seems like pretty lazy reporting to me. Why mention only the larger and/ or expensive inns and hotels, three of which are under the same ownership, with all of the photos courtesy of the properties you list? Camden is especially well known for its smaller, owner run B&Bs and inns, which help shape the town’s character and which aren’t all large, expensive, or located in the middle of downtown. Where are the Maine Stay Inn, the Hawthorn Inn, the Blackberry Inn, the Blue Harbor House, the Belmont inn, or the Elms of Camden, to name just a few? Also, the Inn at Sunrise Point mentioned in the comment isn’t in Camden, it’s in nearby Lincolnville.

  3. The best B And B we have stayed at yet by far was the Captain Swift Inn in Camden Great host great food great accommodations!
