Slide Show: The Emerald Necklace in Massachusetts by Sean Litchfield

Sean Litchfield is a Boston-based editorial and fine art photographer. A Cape Cod native, Litchfield holds a BS in Photography and works in large and medium format film as well as digital. He produces earnest, beautiful images that evoke the deep sense of uneasiness that marks the contemporary landscape. Ordinary scenes are rendered extraordinary, evocative and memorable through this sense of subtle unease.

The Emerald Necklace — the first comprehensive regional park system in the country — is a diverse chain of parks in Boston and Brookline, Massachusetts, that stretches from the Boston Common to the Forest Hills Cemetery. The appearance of the parks changes dramatically as you travel from one end to the other, and some are covered in lush, exotic plants while others are overgrown and unkept. While there are places in the parks where the links connecting them become less apparent, there is one element that connects them all — the wonderful emerald color from which the Emerald Necklace gets it’s name.

The photographs in this slide show are a representation of the park’s great diversity. By working in the late summer months, Litchfield was able to photograph each park the way it is meant to be seen. A wonderful landscape study for him and one he hopes will continue to draw more interest to the parks as a whole.
