A traditional New England bread that is especially good with chicken, ham, and baked beans. Hard to go wrong making this.
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon soda
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 egg
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup molasses
1/4 cup shortening
Mix the flour, salt, soda and baking powder thoroughly. Beat the egg and add to it the buttermilk, molasses and shortening. Add the liquid to the dry ingredients and stir only enough to barely mix. Bake in a well-greased loaf pan at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.
Cut in slices and serve hot.
