For syrup:
1-1/2 cups brown sugar
1-1/2 cups water
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For dough:
3 tablespoons butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1-1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
pinch of salt
3/4 cup milk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Make a syrup from the first four ingredients, bringing them to a boil. Set aside. For the dough, cream butter with sugar. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt into butter mixture; add milk. Pour syrup into a 13×9-inch pan, then drop dough over the syrup. Bake for 30 minutes.
