I have been making Chex Party Mix since the mid 1960’s. I gave it as Christmas gifts to aunts in uncles in recycled coffee cans that I covered in wrapping paper because it was all we could afford as newlyweds. I still make the same recipe (which I consider the Original) and it does NOT include garlic or onion salt!!
I also have been making Chex Mix for decades, and my story is almost the same as Jon’s but my recipe is cut from the chex cereal box and includes onion and garlic powder as well as season salt. I use mixed nuts and pretzels in all different shapes. Always well received and sometimes asked for.
May I please contact Joan for her recipe from the 1960s? As a child in the 1960s I loved it when a friend’s mom would make it. I have a recipe from Ralston Purina dated 1988 that only lists seasoned salt. When I made it in the 80s I used Lawry’s Salt for my seasoned salt. I’m wondering what people use today. My adult children are looking forward to homemade Chex Mix at Christmas.
Claire T. – Here are the ingredients for the Chex Mix recipe I’ve been making since the mid 60’s; it was on the boxes of Chex cereal at the time: 1/4 C. butter or marg.; 1-1/4 tsp. seasoned salt (I use Lawry); 4-1/2 tsp. Worcesterhire sauce; 2-2/3 Cup of Corn Chex, Rice Chex and Wheat Chex; 1 Cup mixed nuts and 1 cup pretzels. The baking directions are the same today as in the 1960s.
I’ve been making this party mix since the late 1950s. This recipe is very similar to mine, except it calls for 1 tsp. onion salt, 1 tsp. garlic salt, and 1 tsp. celery salt along with the other mentioned ingredients. It was called “nuts and bolts” because of the Cheerios cereal and pretzel sticks.
My recipe that I used called for beau monde seasoning. Would anyone possibly still have a copy of it? It was very good. I’ve been unable to find it. ty
