Some say you can’t mess with a classic. To them I say: bacon fluffernutters.

Fluffernutters are a beloved New England treat. Massachusetts has even tried to make them its official state sandwich. And yeah, I think they’re perfect just the way they are. But although this lunchroom classic traditionally contains only peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff, it’s this same simplicity that makes the Fluffernutter the perfect foundation for more ingredients.

In 2016 we pan-fried a fluffernutter in butter per the recommendation of our Facebook audience. This year on National Fluffernutter Day we asked our Instagram audience to share more of their favorite ways to make a fluffernutter. They said to “add chips,” “add jam,” “add some Nutella,” or go full-on “Elvis style,” with bacon and banana. So we did.

If you are a fluffernutter purist and therefore likely to disagree with what’s about to ensue, feel free to switch at this point to our article about the history of the fluffernutter. But if you’re ready to push the fluffernutter limits, read on.

Five Fun Things to Add to a Fluffernutter Sandwich

Here are five terrific fluffernutter add-on ideas:

1. Fluffernutter with Potato Chips

With exactly the right amount of salt to dance around the Fluff’s sweetness (and a snappy crunch to counteract the soft bread), potato chips might be the perfect fluffernutter addition. If you’re like me and you enjoy eating fluffernutters on toasted bread, rejoice: The crunch of the chips adds a similar effect.

Here, I used baked ruffled potato chips for three reasons: They have a somewhat flat profile, which sits nicely in a sandwich; they’re extra crunchy; and they have a slightly lower fat content (which simply felt responsible, considering I was embarking upon an entire evening of fluffernutter-related madness).

2. Fluffernutter with Banana

I sliced the bananas into strips — but you could definitely cut them into disks.

For a fresh spin on the fluffernutter, add sliced bananas. Not only do they add interesting texture and flavor, they make this sweet concoction feel almost healthy. (Well, almost.)

3. Fluffernutter with Bacon

The bacon fluffernutter may be the most controversial of the lot. When I was a child, the PB&B (that’s peanut butter and bacon) was a household staple. But this? Another level.

The sandwich comes together quickly. I microwaved the bacon until it was crispy, about six minutes, buttered a nonstick skillet, and fried the sandwich for about a minute on each side.

Oh, and you’ll definitely want a napkin nearby when you eat this one, since grilling the sandwich will melt the peanut butter.

4. Fluffernutter with Nutella

Adding chocolate-hazelnut spread, like Nutella, to a fluffernutter makes for a decadent treat.

This one seems like a no-brainer. Chocolate hazelnut spread, peanut butter, and Marshmallow Fluff pair perfectly. Now all that’s left to add is a large glass of milk.

Tip: Since the Marshmallow Fluff is the hardest to spread, put it on the bread first and then layer the peanut butter or Nutella over it.

5. Fluffernutter with Fruit Jam

This was the wrong way to go about it. For easy spreading, I suggest coating one slice of bread with Fluff and then adding the jam on top, since the Fluff is the hardest to spread.

What do you get when you cross a PB&J with a fluffernutter? Perfection. I used strawberry jam, but any flavor works. And as with the Nutella sandwich, make sure to spread the Fluff first so that you don’t run into any sticky situations.

Other ways to jazz up your fluffernutters:

  • Swap out the white bread for another kind of bread. We think cinnamon raisin, challah, or banana bread would work wonderfully.
  • On a gluten-free or wheat-free diet? No problem. Try a corn tortilla fluffernutter roll-up. Or layer Fluff and peanut butter on apple or celery slices.
  • “Fun-size” your fluffernutters by making them on crackers. Ritz crackers work especially well.
  • Make a fluffernutter using French toast or pancakes. Then it counts as breakfast — right?

What’s your favorite way to eat a fluffernutter?

  1. Been doing chips and banana for years. Bacon is awesome. Try using mayonnaise when grilling, takes it to another level

  2. I have eaten my spin on the fluffed nutter for over 60 years. I call it the triple decker. I add grape jelly, American Cheese and Raisins using three slices of bread. The order doesn’t matter but I find if you put the cheese and grape jelly next to each other the sandwich tends to slide apart.

  3. My favorite way of eating a peanut butter and fluff is to add a slice of cheese. Learned this years ago in Girl Scout Camp.

  4. I’m 73, I make a peanut butter, grape jelly, fluff, and chopped walnuts on white bread. I’ve been eatting them this way for many years. It’s always my go to sandwich. Yum!

  5. Before making he sandwich I put the two pieces of bread and toast the sandwich. Outside is crisp and inside is warm to make the Fluff gooeir

  6. If you put the fluff in a pastry or ziplock bag and then just drizzle it over any desired combination you can avoid the spreading technique issue. Shalom.

  7. make it on better quality bread (maybe organic or whole grain) and use almond butter instead of peanut butter

  8. Potato chips in Fluffernutters is the best! A touch of honey is also a yummy variation. I make mine on nutty, whole grain bread which gives a little chew to it.

  9. OK, so for you, those who like a little spice try this one it is incredible… Of course we all know the old saying … Everything tastes good when it sits on a Ritz. !! so try red pepper, jelly, and fluff!! Omg a game changa ! ????????

  10. Great on ritz crackers. The taste of the cracker, saltiness, e5c, make it blend well with fluff and pb. Or jam or all 3. Nice little appatizer too. Almost like hav8ng dessert before (and after) dinner!
