lexicon-blue According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Podunk can refer to any “small, unimportant, and isolated town.” But according to Indian Place Names of New England, “Podunk” is literally translated as “a place where the foot sinks in” and is a real place — a former village and pond in Worcester County, Massachusetts. East Brookfield now owns the largest portion of Podunk, a particular cemetery and road. And, yes, it is boggy enough that one’s foot sinks in.
