BEST ISLAND LIGHT:
SOUTHEAST LIGHTHOUSE, Block Island
Built in 1874 to thwart shipwrecks, today the iconic red-brick Southeast Light is a beacon attracting visitors from near and far. Moved back from its precarious perch on the edge of the Mohegan Bluffs in 1993, this National Historic Landmark promises one of the best island vantages; if the guided tour to the top is on offer, it’s a must. Mohegan Trail. 401-466-5009
BEST DYNAMITE:
CASTLE LUNCHEONETTE, Woonsocket
Dynamites, a cousin of the Sloppy Joe, hold a special place in Rhody’s quirky culinary history. And if you want a taste of the real deal—fried hamburger, peppers, onion, tomato sauce, and crushed red pepper served on a torpedo (locals say “grinder”) roll—the Castle is the go-to. Around since the ’50s, this place has had plenty of practice and has even expanded its repertoire to include dyna-dogs and dyna-burgers. 420 Social St. 401-762-5424
BEST WALKING TOUR:
THE RHODE ISLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY WALKING TOUR OF BENEFIT STREET, Providence
This 90-minute tour delves into the fascinating past and vibrant present of one of Providence’s most storied streets. Dubbed the “mile of history,” Benefit showcases some of the capital city’s most picturesque homes, churches, and museums. From June to October, tours depart from the John Brown House Museum. 52 Power St. 401-273-7507 x362; rihs.org/walking-tours
BEST VINTAGE RIDE:
FLYING HORSE MERRY-GO-ROUND, Westerly
Imaginations soar at the Flying Horse Merry-Go-Round. And it’s no wonder: These 20 meticulously carved and embellished horses are suspended from the center, which gives the feeling that riders are flying. A must visit, it’s the oldest (dating back to 1876) and only one of its kind left in the country. 151 Bay St. 401-348-6007
BEST FAMILY-STYLE CHICKEN:
WRIGHT’S FARM RESTAURANT, Harrisville
Wright’s is a Rhode Island institution, and the numbers prove its popularity; the folks here have been churning out family-style chicken dinners for more than four decades at a facility that holds 1,000-plus diners. Even with that kind of capacity, don’t be surprised if they’re running a wait for their all-you-can eat rolls, salad, pasta, fries, and chicken. 84 Inman Road. 401-769-2856; wrightsfarm.com
