Hidden away on the corner of School and Grove Street in the center of Peterborough is a classic European-style pub called Harlow’s. The warm, cozy atmosphere and the mix of the crowd gives Harlow’s a family atmosphere, while the small outdoor deck and seating area makes it a great community “hang-out.” I find it’s a great place to meet friends for a quick sandwich at lunchtime. The after-work crowd gathers to enjoy the great selection of beer on tap — usually a nice mix of 10 beers, including New England microbrewery beers and seasonal European offerings. They’re one of the few area pubs that knows how to pour a Guinness! Plus, they have a solid selection of wine.
Another reason the locals flock to Harlow’s is for their food — a basic menu offering hot and cold sandwiches, Mexican style items, and (my favorite!) veggie chili. If you’re up for more of a hearty meal, their dinner specials keep the dining crowd happy.
Over the years Harlow’s has been become an area magnet for great alternative-style music and a great mix of music genres. On Fridays and Saturdays you can listen to and dance to funk-rock, Reggae, Gypsy rock, R&B, jazz, or even bluegrass. Many artists are from New Hampshire, the Boston area, and even from outside of New England.
If you’ve never been to a true family-style English or Irish pub, then stop by Harlow’s for a little taste of Europe. Cheers!
