Yankee is fortunate to have so many talented photographers to call upon for its varied stories. It is always an honor to look back on the year and revisit all of the work that goes into every issue. The wonderful contributions of many who make our pages sing. Among my favorite travel stories from this past year include Cait Bourgault’s beautiful images of the landscape of northern Maine (“Find your Way Downeast”) and Renaud Phillipe’s hometown take (“Weekend Away in Quebec City”). Other standouts include Greer Muldowney’s artful eye on Boston’s Emerald Necklace (“Olmsted’s Gifts”), Michael Piazza’s perspective on a thriving artist community in Lowell (“Artful Escapes”) along with Greta Rybus’s compelling portraits of forager Jenna Rozelle (“From Forest to Table”) & driftwood artist Michael Fleming (“To Hear the Voice of Wood”).
As photo editor, I’m thrilled that Yankee continues to tell such wonderful stories of New England through both compelling words and unforgettable visuals. And while it’s always difficult to narrow down a full year of work, we’ve put together a collection of 20 favorite photographs from 2023 that represent the excellence of the whole — and we hope you’ll click through to the original story or issue to read (and see) more.
