Best Hot Dogs in Every New England State
There’s more to New England dogs than Fenway Franks (as good as they are). Want to know where to find the best New England hot dogs (yes, even right now)? Our state-by-state guide will have you in hot dog heaven.

Photo Credit : Katherine KeenanIn this era of high-low foodie fusion, there are plenty of haute hot dogs to go around. Blended with Kobe beef, laced with foie gras, they come drizzled with chimichurri, bonito flakes, and sriracha, and arrive nestled in brioche and pretzel buns. And this kind of food play has its charms. But we’re partial to the classics from decades-old, family-run spots that have mastered the art of a perfect dog on a griddled or steamed bun, topped with a house relish or special sauce. So consider this list of the best hot dogs in every New England state a sort of hall of fame. All of its members are worth a visit.
The Best Hot Dogs in Every New England State
Best Hot Dog in Connecticut: Blackie’s in Cheshire
Since 1928, three generations of the Blackman-Mahoney family have been serving up top-notch dogs topped with their special (and very secret) spicy pepper relish and a stripe of brown mustard. The quirky eatery, a barnlike building anchored by two octagonal towers, sits on the same piece of land that Art and Mary Blackman purchased on the Cheshire-Waterbury line in 1925 with the dream of opening their own business. We love how the Blackie’s cooking method — the hot dogs, sourced from Martin Rosol in New Britain, are boiled in oil — crisps the edges and makes the casings split. It’s a nice textural counterpoint to the soft bun. Enjoy these treats with the house drink: a birch beer served on tap (chocolate milk takes second place). On the side? Just potato chips, no fries.
Best Hot Dog in Maine: Flo’s Hot Dogs in Cape Neddick
Flo’s Hot Dogs, located in a little red shack on Route 1 in southern Maine, has been woven into the vacation memories of countless families since Florence Stacy bought it in 1959. But as a year-round restaurant, it’s very much a local’s haunt. Now in the hands of Flo’s daughter-in-law and granddaughter, the little diner that could continue to serve all-beef dogs (from Old Neighborhood in Lynn, Massachusetts) topped as you like ’em. That is, unless you like ketchup: A sign at the counter reads, “Ketchup (for [children] under 15).” Take our advice and go with the two of the house special, a boiled dog and steamed bun topped with mayo, a dash of celery salt, and the tangy-sweet-oniony house relish, which won a Yankee Food Award in 2013 and can be purchased in jars or ordered online. Taken together, these ingredients form a perfect harmony of flavor and texture.

Best Hot Dog in Massachusetts: Jack’s Hot Dog Stand in North Adams
Eating at Jack’s requires a little patience, as there’s usually a line and the space is cramped. Like many of our best hot dog picks, Jack’s is a family business that dates back decades — in this case, a full century. Jaffros “Jack” Levanos opened this spot in 1917, and his grandson Jeff now runs the place. Our favorite order is the chili cheese dog: richly meaty, served on a steamed bun with a slice of melted American cheese, and a rightful bargain at $2.15. But there’s also sauerkraut and fried onions and peppers to top things off. Add a side of onion rings or fries (both excellent), and you’ll still make it out of here for under $5.
Best Hot Dog in New Hampshire: Gilley’s in Portsmouth
It’s hard to resist the atmosphere of a genuine 1940s Worcester diner car, but the food at Gilley’s in Portsmouth is an attraction unto itself. These hot dogs, made from beef, pork, and veal, are traditional in style — for toppings, you’ll find chili, pickles, sauerkraut, and onions — and sourced from Shields Provisions in Kennebunk, Maine. The wieners are steamed, and the buns are griddled and buttery. It’s the classic American hot dog, perfected.
Best Hot Dog in Rhode Island: Olneyville New York System in Providence
By all means, order at least two of Olneyville’s finest, served in a steamed bun with their signature meat sauce, mustard, chopped onion, and celery salt. That’s called “all the way,” and if you order enough of them, the guys who’ve worked there for a decade or three will stack them “up the arm” so they can turn out six at a time. Order them with coffee milk and a side of fries with vinegar and salt, maybe ketchup. But just don’t call them hot dogs. They’re wieners, pronounced wee-nuhs, and that’s final. Olneyville has been run by four generations of the Stevens family since the 1930s (there’s a second location in Cranston), and it’s nice to know that some things never change.

Best Hot Dog in Vermont: Beansie’s Bus in Burlington
From April through October, the Beansie’s food truck is a fixture in Battery Park. Launched from a retrofitted school bus in 1944, Beansie’s serves up Burlington’s best: steamed McKenzie natural casing franks on Koffee Kup Bakery rolls. Whether you choose the Michigan (with a homemade hamburger meat sauce) or the Virginia (wrapped in bacon), we bet you can’t eat just one.

This post was first published in 2017 and has been updated.
Good list, Amy.
Blackies has the best relish ever! Wish they sold it in bulk!
Teo’s in Pittsfield Ma is the gold standard by which ALL hot dog places are measured. Great hot dogs, cold beer, and an unassuming and unchanging style make Teo’s the best!!!
Teos in Pittsfield Ma. By far. No comparison
Teo’s is OK but it doesn’t hold a candle to Jack’s or Nick’s Nest.
Olneyville NY Sytem. Best in New England. Maybe the world.
Sorry to tell you but Coney Island in Worcester is the best in Massachusetts. Nice try.
Yea Coney Island is good too. They will get lots of business when that new stadium goes in.
Absolutely by far; George’s Coney Island Lunch on Southbridge Street in Worcester, MA.We’ve tried many, but no dogs compare to “two-up, extra mustard”. Good ol’ Kayem franks with skins and Nissen buns. “Four-up” is even better.
The best in the state without a doubt.
They must be doing something right. Recently celebrated 100 years in business! Always in the same family. Recently a book “ Two up and a bag of chips”published about the history of George’s Coney Island. Wonderful memories!
Rookie. Coney Island is to Speeds in Roxbury what the What your local PopWarner team is to The New England Patriots.
BEN’S CHILI DOGS in Newport, RI. I know Onelyville gets the attention, but try a few Ben’s on Broadway in Newport, RI. Best ever.
I haven’t had one from Olneyville but i try to go to Ben’s whenever I find myself in Newport! They are addictive.
Hot dog Annie’s in Leicester, MA. “Everything plus” dogs, homemade root beer, and lightning fast service. Deee-lish!
Teo’s Hot dogs in Pittsfield is the Ultimate Best I live in Florida but you can bet when family comes down there not empty handed!!!
Hard to beat Rosie’s hot dog on the pier Eastport Maine.
Fred’s Franks are the best…
Flo’s is a must! It reminded me of Senfeld’s Soup Nazi episode.
The best hot dogs in CT are from a little spot in New Britain called Capitol lunch. Since 1929 locals have stopped by for a cappy dog smothered with their special sauce chopped onions and mustard. I always order them this way with cheese.
went to Central, you are 100% right, it was sold but pretty much the same
I’m not a hot dog fan. Only Fenway Franks for me.
Super Duper weenie in Fairfield Connecticut has the best hotdogs and fries and homemade soup and lots of other good stuff.
Carolyn of Connecticut
The best dogs in R.I. are Rod’s Grille in Warren!
Guida’s Middlefield CT would be my last supper!
In Burlington, Vermont, Beansies which parked on the edge of Battery park facing Lake Champlain was the best grilled split hotdog with french fries! And what local can’t ever forget Charlie’s red hots on lower church street and eventually on the road to mallet’s bay. What a wonderful meat sauce!
the best hot dogs and shoe stribg onion rings are at Art Braddish’s in North Grafton Ma. They are open now for curbside take out and eat in uour car. Amazing food.
I really don’t know another place in Central Mass that grills the buns and the dogs like art Bradishes.
Ketchup is the best, what foolish place that one is haha.
What about Jimmies of Savin Rock
I was just thinking the same thing!
How about Haven Brothers at 2 in the morning in Providence
My father grew up in Waterbury got married and moved to Louisville Ky. Every summer we went back to visit. A visit to Blackies was a must. Went back in 2017 for a funeral nothing had changed. I still love them. Might be better dogs but no better memories. PS. You order the relish from their website
Nicks Nest on Rte 5 in Holyoke, Mass. Best I’ve had!
I’ll probably never get to see New England, especially Maine again but I love reading about it and watching “This Old House”
Spot on. Flo’s is a must stop favorite of mine.
grew up in NH, north of the notch. NH provision dogs were tradition. hard to find good dogs nowadays (Virginia)
Wasses in Rockland. Don’t think you can beat them.Great day trip!
Agreed!! Wasses every time!!
Nick’s in Fall River was the best. Does anyone know if it is still there by South Park?
still there and still the best!
Why the picture of weiners???? Weiners are NOT hot dogs. Are you from New England?
I’ve been to half of those. Flo’s is great, but Bolley’s Famous Franks in Hallowell, Maine is right up there with the best.
Bolley’s is the best as far as I am concerned.
I have two New England favorite hot dog stands, one long gone now, the other fading. The hot dog stand at Whalom Park in Lunenburg served good, simple dogs and were a good enough reason in itself to visit. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to save the park. Friendly (no ‘s, please) Ice Cream was everywhere and served a tasty hot dog, properly grilled and on a traditional top-loader bun, also buttered and grilled. Mustard, onion and relish were all I ever needed, you can keep the fancy-schmancy toppings…except chili, of course. I do love a traditional East Coast chili-dog!
You MUST be kidding!!! JIMMIES @ Savin Rock ROCKS!! None other can compare!
Lee’s Hot Dog Stand, Baldwinville, MA
Fan Neeks in Fall River, Ma or Nicks. Best Coney Island hot dogs!
have to agree we use to go there every Sat from Newport our saying since there were a lot of us was twenty wasn’t enough
There are places that are much better in ME than Flo’s. I’ve had dogs up & down the East coast and Flo’s pales in comparison to most,
Teos in Pittsfield Ma. By far are the absolute best!
TEO’s by far!!! I live in PA and try to get to Teo’s whenever I’m home.
Coney island totally over rated in my opinion. Worked one block away for 15 years, went twice. OK but not great.
Anyone who’s anyone knows that, while Blackie’s makes the best RELISH in Connecticut, Frankie’s Hot Dogs of Waterbury is the absolute best hot dog in the universe.
I agree. The choice of their hot dogs is outstanding and they have their own home relish which is excellent.
Haven’t decided where I’ve had the best hotdog but I do know Rod‘s Grille in Warren R.I. has the best wieners
Family Pizza Restaurant in Niantic CT has a 24″ one they call the Mega Dog! The cook is very generous with the toppings.
Love Gilly’s, best choice on the list. But my favorite hot dog is at Simone’s in Lewiston, Maine. Red, natural casing beef and pork on a buttered, toasted NE lobster roll bun. I’m dying just thinking about them. And finishing it off with a cigar up the street at Federal Cigars. Great one.
We’d seen it, but never tried. Is it still open?
as far as CT, its 1) capitol lunch in new britain (best sauce, price, quickness, blue collar vibe i want from my weiny spot) then 2) super duper weinie in fairfield. this is 2 bc its expensive and the parking lot is terrible
Capitol Lunch is #1. Been around forever, delicious, hasn’t been ‘gentrified’. My Dad grew up in New Britain but retired to NH. He would make a special stop on his way to CT to visit me to bring my family a box of Capitol chili dogs.
In CT, try The Windmill, been there since the forties on the Strfd, BPT line, good bar (hard to find with a good dog!) great deal and great dogs. Also, The Greeks, aka Tomlinsons, or vice-versa Bpt – foot long, chili dog, extra bacon, raw onion. Been awhile for both, but Rawley’s in Ffld if you don’t mind waiting and Super Duper Winnie, BPT/Ffld, both good. I’ve tried most of the CT contenders and honestly have never had a bad dog at any of them! Eat long, live long!
Like to let BobM know he must not have good taste buds. George’s Coney Island in Worcester MA has great DOGSSSSS. The place has been around for approx. 100yrs. If the dogs weren’t good, the business wouldn’t be active. Check the place out and tell Bob he doesn’t know what he is talking about.
Casey’s Natick Ma….
CASEY’S RULE!
Coney Island in Worcester is the best!
What about Wein-O-Rama in Cranston RI?
I have to agree, Faneeks in Fall River the best, just ask the phantom gourmet.
Does anyone remember Stella’s Hot Dog stand at the beginning of the Lake Quinsigamond bridge on the Worcester side? Going back to the early 60’s, I was a young boy working the fruit stand across the street, had no money but I could afford one of her GREAT hot dogs for 10 cents! Yup! Grilled with olive oil, buns were in the steamer. Stella ran it by herself, great lady, very kind! I will never forget her! Childhood memories!
Jack’s is okay but Nick’s Nest in Holyoke, MA is even better. They got my vote.
The dogs have no flavor and the steamed buns stick to your teeth
Sadly have not lived in my home state of Massachusetts for far too many years but always loved hotdogs at Brewster’s in Beverly and Vic’s in Danvers
Any list that does not include Boston Speeds, a hotdog truck in Newmarket Square in Roxbury, is quite simply not worth reading.
How about Braddish’s in North Grafton ??? I’ve had Coney Island hot dogs but I still think Braddish’s beats them hands down.
It appears that Yankee Travel does most of there reporting in Northern parts of New England. Every seldom go to Connecticut and Rhode island. On the Hot Dogs subject We have Super Weenie on the Fairfield,/ Bridgeport line. Overton’s in E.Norwalk, Ct and Capitol Lunch in the middle of the State. All are outstanding and you have to wait in line. Sometimes 15 to 20 minutes.
There’s Capitol Lunch, And then there’s everybody else, OK Olneyville is right there too.
Ahhh Hard Hittin’ New Britain! The very BEST are Cappy Dog! When you’ve been making that special sauce for over 90 years (93 this year), you’ve got to be doing something right. Rosol’s hotdogs are made just three blocks away and they’re the best around. Burgers aren’t bad either. When in Central CT, Capital Lunch is a MUST GO for the hot dog connoisseur.
We make our own sweet onion sauce that goes extremely well on many things, especially ribs, but great on chicken and pork too. We use Vidalia onions, ketchup, and a few other ingredients that I can’t divulge. We. Are the chicken with the sauce on it then rush it lightly a bit more when it’s done. We used to like flo’s sauce a lot, but it seems something changes (or our tastes have changed) and it doesn’t taste as good these days. Our sauce doesn’t have the aftertaste of flo’s, so we prefer it now. It’s similar to flo’s, but better in Our opinion. It’s wicked good!
A bit surprised that no one mentioned the Howard Johnson hot dogs. I know, HoJo’s long gone. But, the dogs were simplicity…toasted bun in a cardboard holder. One could eat plain, with ketchup, or my favorite mustard and relish. I would go to the Howard Johnson at Wollaston Beach.
You need to take a trip to Eastport, Maine and have a Rosie’s hotdog!! Oh my! Rosie’s has been around for over 50 years and has wicked good hotdogs cooked in peanut oil. Top them with sautéed onions, relish and Raye’s stone ground mustard(made right here in Eastport!) and you’ll love every bite. Enjoy your meal while sitting on the breakwater watching whales, seals, eagles as well as people mackerel fishing and fishing boats coming and going from our working waterfront. It’s a combination you can’t beat!!!
My birthday present to myself was a trip too Blackie’s. It was a pleasant surprise, clean, quick and efficient. The dogs with their home made relish, chips and a root beer made the excursion a treat.
