The 10 Best Lobster Rolls in New England
We held our local lobster expert’s feet to the fire and made him choose the 10 best lobster rolls in New England!

Coffee By Design | Portland, Maine
Photo Credit : Katherine KeenanThe lobster roll has become the New England summertime sandwich of choice. Tasty chunks of lobster meat drizzled with butter or tossed with mayo and served up on a crisp, buttery, New England hot dog bun are all the rage these days. Food and travel writer Mike Urban, author of Lobster Shacks: A Road-Trip Guide to New England’s Best Lobster Joints (Countryman Press, 2012) has shared his picks for the 10 best lobster rolls in New England. (And no, the McDonald’s lobster roll is not one of them!)

Chatham Pier Fish Market | Chatham, MA
Located at Cape Cod’s “elbow” in the town of Chatham, the Chatham Pier Fish Market serves up an excellent cold lobster roll made with fresh-picked lobster meat from the market’s super-fresh supply. A small fleet of lobster boats anchored just off the pier keeps the market well-stocked throughout the season. The roll features a buttered, toasted, split-top bun, a crisp leaf of lettuce, copious amounts of chilled lobster, and a generous sprinkling of paprika on top. While noshing on your roll, be sure to check out the fishing boats offloading their catches throughout the day on the adjacent pier.

Bite Into Maine | Cape Elizabeth, ME
This chrome food trailer in Fort Williams Park has developed a huge following in the past few years, and with good reason. Not only is the view of Portland Head Light fantastic, but the lobster rolls (six different kinds) are also equally breathtaking. The Maine-style roll is chilled and dressed in mayo and fresh chives. “The Connecticut” features warm lobster with butter. “The Picnic” roll starts with a bed of coleslaw, topped with chilled lobster and melted butter. The other three feature chilled lobster bathed in mayo seasoned with (take your pick) wasabi, curry, or chipotle. Whichever roll you pick, you really can’t go wrong.

Red’s Eats | Wiscasset, ME
If you can handle the hour-plus wait in line on the sidewalk along busy U.S. Route 1, your sweet reward will be a magnificent lobster roll that’s known far and wide as one of the best lobster rolls in Maine. With tail, claw, and knuckle meat from a 1+/-pound lobster, this roll is bigger than most and may be had with mayo, warm butter, neither, or both.

Five Islands Lobster Company | Georgetown, ME
This shack is perfectly positioned on the town dock to receive a steady flow of super-fresh lobster from the cold, deep waters of nearby Sheepscot Bay. The lobster is fresh-picked throughout the day, tossed with a bit of mayo, and served in a toasted, buttered, split-top bun lined with a leafy piece of lettuce. Cold rolls only are served here; no butter.

The Clam Shack | Kennebunk, ME
This is arguably the best of the best lobster rolls in New England. Owner Steve Kingston’s meticulous use of fresh-daily, soft shell lobsters and chilling each handpicked order on ice creates a freshness of flavor unmatched anywhere. Served on toasted, buttered hamburger-style buns from a local bakery, the Clam Shack’s cold-meat rolls may be had with mayonnaise or warm butter. This is one of the best lobster rolls, by which all others should be measured.

The Lobster Pool | Rockport, MA
Nestled in a quiet corner of Cape Ann, this pretty little spot serves up the best lobster roll between Boston and the New Hampshire border. Each roll at the Pool is made to order with generous chunks of lobster mixed in a small bowl with mayo, then placed atop a crunchy leaf of lettuce and wedged into a toasted, buttered split-top bun. Butter may be substituted for mayo, on request. The Pool’s lobsters are procured fresh daily from a supplier in neighboring Gloucester, then cooked up and hand-picked at the Pool throughout the day.
Lobster Landing | Clinton, CT
Owners Enea and Cathie Bacci have put a unique Italian spin on their hot, buttered lobster roll at this quaint, dilapidated shack next to the Clinton town harbor. Instead of making their lobster rolls with split-top hot dog buns, they load their warm, buttered lobster meat into hefty Italian grinder rolls that have been toasted on a standard-issue, propane-fired backyard barbecue grill. The result is a warm, buttery, crispy-crunchy lobster roll that pleases in both quantity and quality.

Rye Harbor Lobster Pound | Rye Harbor, NH
Down by the town dock in Rye Harbor is a tiny, sunny shack that serves some of the most innovative lobster dishes anywhere in New England. From Lobster Gazpacho to Lobster Pizza, there’s plenty to try here. Don’t miss the hot lobster roll with the meat bathed in a warm butter-and-sherry sauce and served on a buttered split-top bun that’s toasted on a plug-in griddle. There’s also a cold roll with mayo, a touch of celery, and a hint of lemon.

Anthony’s Seafood | Middletown, RI
This warehouse-like seafood market on a commercial strip north of Newport masks a wonderful eatery that serves up a heaping, six-ounce lobster roll that comes with fries, coleslaw, and a pickle for a belt-busting plate of lobster-roll goodness. The picked-fresh-daily lobster meat is tossed with a bit of mayo and lightly sprinkled with white pepper. The price tag is higher than most, but the extra cost is well worth it.

McLoons Lobster Shack | South Thomaston, ME
In 2017, Yankee Senior Food Editor Amy Traverso embarked on The Lobster Roll Adventure up the Maine coast, from Kittery to Eastport, to sample nearly two dozen rolls and crown a champion. Here’s what she had to say about her top-pick McLoons.
Imagine the lobster shack of your dreams: a tiny red hut perched over the water with a tented patio and picnic tables. Across a small cove, another red building serves as the drop-off point for day boats like the Four Winds, whose crew is unloading lobster crates while the Edith C. idles behind, waiting for the berth. And one family does it all, the catching and the cooking. There’s homemade peach pie and coleslaw and the freshest lobster. And here’s the genius part: Not only can you get a half-and-half roll (one side butter, one side mayonnaise, sliced crosswise), but also they put the mayo in the bottom of the bun. Like a condiment! Which is what it is! The lobster tastes like lobster, the bun tastes like butter, and the sauces enrich the lean meat. One thing is certain: This will be hard to beat.
What do you think? Are these the best lobster rolls in New England? Share your picks in the comment section below.
This post was first published in 2014 and has been updated.
The butter might be hot at Red’s, but when you pour it over chilled lobster meat, it coagulates. And, that’s just a downright icky taste and texture. No waiting in line on the side of the highway for me. I’ll take my lobster with the killer view at Five Islands.
The Beach Plum in North Hampton,N.H. Is by far the best lobster roll around. Winner of the Hampton Seafood festival year in year out.
Glenwood. Hamden, CT. So buttery + huge chunks of generous LOBSTER meat
I have to mention City Fish in Wethersfield Connecticut. They are a sea food distributor with a small restaurant that serves a variety of sea food meals “to go” or sit in. They have a lobster roll that should be sampled for consideration to the top 10 list. You can choose from hot with butter or cold with lettuce. The roll is almost 6 inches long and is more like a sub with fresh lobster piled on. Definitely worth the visit in my humble opinion.
Clearly, you have not been to Cape Cod, MA! The Kettle Ho restaurant, Cotuit MA. They beat every one of these in size alone! It is not even meant to be shared, but some can get a second lovely treat for later! Check it out!
Best lobster roll is here inland in a roadside Williamsburg Snack Bar food shack here in Williamsburg, Ma, lots of great lobster, minimum mayo and nothing else! Oh price $8.00.
The Galley Hatch has a year-round lobster roll that is the best – almost no mayo with great lobstah!
Almost forgot, it’s located in Hampton, NH Rte. 1.
QUODDY BAY all the way! They do it right, makes all Mainers proud!
Quito’s Restaurant in Bristol, RI right on the Harbor has a great lobster roll offered either dry (no mayo) with butter side, or with dill and light mayo. Nothing measures up to NH or Maine coastal lobster, though.
You really have to try the lobster roll at the Fisherman’s Coop in Boothbay Harbor. The other good option is the Trevett Store on the Barter’s Island Road. Super fresh and very good the Trevett’s is also reasonably priced. The lobster roll at Robinson’s on Southport is pretty decent too.
Growing up in New England I’ve tasted a lot of lobster rolls, a whole lot. Both the CT-style hot with butter (my preference hands down) and also lobster-salad-with-mayo. Two of the best spots are 1) Lenny & Joe’s fish tale in Madison, CT for a CT-style hot butter lobster roll (which is consistently less dry than Clinton’s Lobster Landing although Lobster Landing wins for charming locale, hands down!!). And although I don’t particularly care for cold lobster rolls with mayo, the one sold at 2) Grace Church in Martha’s Vineyard is by far one of the best ever to be had. Stellar lobster flavor through and through.
Almost anywhere on Mt. Desert Island!
Cannot beat the lobster roll at Red’s! Family owned for generations resulting in a pride in their product….you get more than a whole lobster in each toasted roll and it’s served with love!
I think they missed the boat when they didn’t include my favorite. JPs in Westboro, MA. Can’t beat $14.95 for the one they serve up.
Yes we love this place the lobster rolls are great!
The Barnacle in Marblehead, great cold lobster roll. Neptune Oysters in Boston’s North end has by far and away the best hot lobster roll. For CT fans Abbots is very good, but in the tiny town of Noank people also line up for Fords. It’s right on the water and has very good food.
As a self proclaimed expert on New England Lobster rolls I like many of your choices. Others I don’t know. However your missing one. Captain Scotts in New London consistantly has the best Lobster rolls anywhere. They do such a large volume that the lobsters are always, always fresh. It is a hard place to find if your not a local, but make the effort you won’t be disappointed.
I totally agree about Captain Scott’s. Some locals told us about it when we first visited New London in 2004. We go back anytime we can. I travel to New York (from Cleveland) for work about once a year. If possible, I extend my trip by a day or two and grab the train up to New London, CT, mostly for my fix of Captain Scott’s!!!
Come on! what about Marky’s or Browns?!
Was recently lucky enough to find The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport-that lobster roll was incredible. Fresh baked round bun which is toasted and lots of fresh, buttery lobster. I thought I wouldn’t like cold lobster, but it was so full of flavor and refreshing on a summer day.
I come home to New England every August and one of my must do items is have a Lobster Roll at Aquidneck Lobster Company in Newport, RI. It is HUGE! It has a touch of mayo with some dill. Definitely one of my favorites!
I have to agree! I can’t take this post seriously without the Beach Plum on it. I have been to six of the places on here and beach plum wins out!
You must try the lobster roll at The Skipper Restaurant in south Yarmouth ,cape cod. 1/2 lb lobster. Yum!
Cap’t Cass on Rock Harbor in Orleans, MA on Cape Cod offers the single greatest lobster roll out there.
seaswirl in mystic on route l has awesome lobster rolls, – have eatern in all of the above places in my travels – excellent
Vals, in Holden, Ma. served with very thin fried onion rings on top
Flip Flops, in Holden,Ma. served in a foot long toasted hd roll,
Sundancers, Dennis Ma. Jumbo Lobster Roll ($24) seemed like the meat of 2 lobsters.
ps when ordering say no lettuce. always seems like you get more lobster.
The Lobster Shack At Two Lights!
225 Two Lights Rd, Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107
(207) 799-1677
A lobster roll with a view that will make you cry like a baby…..LOL
Where is Red’s Family Restaurant, it sounds great.. Thanks.
Spinney’s at Popham Beach has been a family favorite for over 50 years.
My wife and I totally agree and don’t understand the hype about Red’s. Huge portions but we were disappointed by the chilled lobster meat and the person at the table next to us had the same reaction.
The Red Barn in Augusta, ME has a lobster roll so massive, so stuffed with ultra-fresh, tender and magnificent meat, that three healthy eaters can split it. And their seafood chowder redefines the genre. Can you tell I’m hungry right now?!
What’s your favorite type of BUN?
I think you forgot to check out Connecticut! The Seven Sails in downtown Milford (don’t blink) can hold it’s own with any more northern state! It’s worth the trip!
I agree about The Beach Plum – absolutely not a complete list without them being included!
Stowes West Haven, CT has a mean lobster roll.
7 Seas in Milford, CT has the BEST in CT.
The Port in Harwichport, MA. BEST I’ve EVER had, and I’ve had alot of them!
Don’t know how “Lobster in the Rough” in Noank, CT got such a good rep. Been there several times and very disappointed. Lobster was soggy, tasteless. Both the sandwich and the whole lobster.
I agree completely with you.My first stop on the way to Boothbay is Red’s. The lobster roll is so worth the wait.I woukdn’t miss it.
Matunuck Oyster Farm in East Matunuck, RI…BEST lobster roll in New England!
List is not complete without The Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth, ME. Best lobster roll with the best view!
Alive and Kicking, Cambridge Ma. has a lobster sandwich, not a lobster roll but it contains more lobster than the roll does and the bread is reallly good toasted Itailian bread, Has been voted best in Boston many times and it is.
I’ve been going to Browns for 65 years. Moved to SC and miss it every day. Lobsters, fried food steamers, and onion rings to die for.
Flat sides grilled hotdog roll. Best lobster s from Maine Hands down.
7 Sea, Milford Ct.
The lobster roll was invented in Milford
1927 at Perry’s Restaurant
You forgot the BEST – Stew Leonard’s!
Norwalk, CT
Danbury, CT
Newington, CT
Yonkers, NY and soon in Farmingdale, Long Island
http://www.StewLeonards.com
Stew’s is also great for their live lobster sales! For 5.99/lb, I have been able to buy 4 lobsters, cook ’em up and make 3 – 4 of the best lobster rolls…I say “best” because I am making them fresh, from scratch. If I want them cold, dressed with mayo, fine. Hot with butter? Also fine! Stew’s will also steam your lobsters for you, so you can’t go wrong here!
And when vacationing in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, a trip to Robinson’s Wharf is a must. Their lobster rolls are wonderful and reasonably priced.
Tuckaway Tavern in Raymond, NH has great lobster rolls, and 2 for the price on Monday’s and Tuesday’s!
My house, of course…no doubt about the freshness of all the ingredients. Reasonable rates and the locale can’t be better…limited seating though.
If you want a delicious lobster roll, JP’s on route 9 in Westboro, Ma has a 1 lb lobster roll. The rest of the seafood meals are reasonably priced and you WON’T believe the portions.
Both The Lobster Shack and Beach Plum should top this list!
Maine Diner in Wells, have one of the best hot lobster rolls I have tried. Comes with drawn butter, Chips or cole slaw and a great deli pickle.
What about the Beach Plum in Rye, NH? They are HUGE and very delicious. Was surprised to see it was not on the list as they have won awards year after year for best lobster roll – maybe it’s just NH.
the best lobster roll I ever had was at Kay’s in Woonsockey, RI. Tons of fresh lobster, very little mayo and perfect cold slaw on the side.
Moby Dicks in Wellfleet, MA. Their lobster roll is #1.
Beach Plum I agree is the best lobster roll what are they thinking not including them in the list they are # 1
Having lived on the NH seacoast, I too enjoyed the lobster roll from “The Beach Plum” in North Hampton, NH.
Here in north central MA. I need travel no farther than S.S. Lobster for an excellent jumbo lobster roll.
S.S. Lobster, Ltd
691 River St
Fitchburg, Massachusetts
I cannot believe this editor left out a place which is MUCH better than Red’s Eats. It is called the Red Barn Restaurant in Augusta, ME. Sounds like this place was given a placement on hype, not on quality of lobster roll. Broaden your horizons in ME to find the real deal in Lobster Rolls!
I absolutely agree. It’s not summer in New England without a trip to The Lobster Shack. Awesome lobster roll on a traditional hot dog roll, lightly toasted with choice of butter or mayo. Gorgeous view….can’t be beat.
Hallowell seafood in hallowell maine is the best I’ve had fresh everyday so big you can make two meals out of it and under twenty bucks with fast prompt service. Very courteous family run business if you don’t get called sir or ma’am a half a dozen times before you leave you went to the wrong place
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed The Beach Plum was missing. This list is not legit without them!
There’s a place in Scarborough, ME that’s awesome.
The Lazy Lobster in Milford, CT. Total dive, but lobster rolls on French baguette is awesome! Also. Haven Bros. in Providence makes a great lobster salad roll!
Totally agree with Brunswick……very difficult to eat, not worth the wait! Try the lobster roll at the Lincolnville Beach lobster pound restaurant. It’s just right!
You obviously have not experienced the lobster roll at Neptune Oyster in Boston. Been eating rolls all my life, and this $27 piece of heaven is worth every buttery penny. A must try at least once when you are in town. But, be prepared to wait at least an hour or two for a table at lunchtime on the weekend.
Wow memorys there in th 80s
While I agree with some on this list.. Reds does not deserve the hype. Too long of a line, for a so so roll. My favorite is close to home and I realize how lucky I am. Fishermen’s Net in Gray. They are open year round and the roll is market price, I have paid as high as $14 and as low as $9!! Amazing!! You won’t be dissapointed.
Route 100 in Gray
(207)657-3474
Sesuit Harbor in Dennis, Cape Cod, MA
I agree Sesuit Harbor is fabulous. Also,WEQUASSETT RESORT in Harwich although you think you are in Chatham serves up a hefty roll. Delish
Lenny and Joe’s restaurant in Westbrook, Ct. has the best lobster rolls, They are to die for.
Lenny and Joe’s wins hands down.
Whole Heartily agree. Been going to Capt Cass since 1976.
Mike’s in Mattapoiset on Rt 6 near Fairhaven. Try the lazy mans Lobster in a special dish.
Abbott’s in Noank, CT is hands down, the best place to get a hot lobster roll! We take visiting guests there all summer long and no one is ever disappointed (even our relatives from Maine)! It is so relaxing watching the boaters, kayakers, and paddle boarders go by. Don’t forget to bring your own bottle of wine or get one at the Universal Package Store on your way there. Also they are dog friendly. Enjoy!
Agree with Steve – best is at the Aquidneck Lobster House in Newport, RIin Hampton Beach NH
I don’t know about you but I am always disappointed in great seafood being served in a little hotdog bun…just had a lobster filled with not too much mayo on a long baquette style roll at McQuirks in Hampton Beach NH…Excellent!
Kays in Woonsoket is absolutely the best…and I’m from maine!
The Raw Bar in Mashpee has the largest, most delicious lobster roll I have ever had. Hands down.
Frills in Ogunquit, ME has by far the best lobster “roll” anywhere! They serve it on a buttery croissant with lettuce and it is AMAZING! Sad they weren’t included on this. They are a hidden gem on Shore Road in Ogunquit!
What about Ken’s Place in Scarborough, ME?! Whenever we visited Maine we’d be sure to stop there.
Red’s is not a restaurant. It’s a tiny roadside shack.
Larson’s Lunch Box in Damariscotta has a great roll, without the wait at Red’s.
Totally agree! I don’t know what the hype is about Red’s. I was so disappointed to get this beautiful, over stuffed lobster roll, with a dish of nice hot drawn butter, only to pour it over and watch it solidify as it hit the totally icy cold lobster meat 🙁 When I asked them, they said there was no way to heat it…. really? How do other places manage to serve it hot! A pot of hot water and a quick dunk is all it would take. Definitely not worth waiting in line for.
If you’re ever in Guilford, CT – The Lobster Pound at the Guilford Docks is awesome! Hot and butter. One of my favorites!
Petey’s Summertime Restaurant in Rye, NH, has my favorite lobster roll. The right amount of lobster and mayo on a round bun with just a little shredded lettuce. To my taste, it is far superior to the Beach Plum’s roll, although the Beach Plum may have the best ice cream on the coast.
Almost any place on Nantucket.
You haven’t LIVED until you’ve experienced the GIGANTIC lobster roll from the kitchen of THE COUNTRY INN Restaurant in Warren, RI …
Captain Carlos-Gloucester,ma. lobster land Gloucester as well
This might sound crazy but our favorite lobster rolls come from D’Angelos sandwich shop… It might be a chain restaurant but everytime we visit MA or CT we have to make a stop and get our lobster roll from D’Angelos.
Oh and the other best place for any seafood would be Lenny & Joes in CT… We also have to stop here every trip back to CT… They also sell really nice quality shirts for $6… We stock up on every trip… Our wardrobe consists of Lenny & Joes Shirts 🙂
I cannot take any article seriously that talks about the best lobster rolls without mentioning Sam the Clams in Southington, CT!
I agree 100%! Just had The beach plum for the first time Memorial Day weekend. By far the best lobster roll I’ve ever had. Also try the clams then and tarter sauce are iut of this world. There other food is phenominal as well. Can’t believe Abbots even made the list. There are much better rolls in CT. than there.
Agreed. I also lived in CT and love the Lobster Pound. We live in Bridgton ME now and like the lobster rolls at the Galley and at the Lobster Pound in Naples.
Certainly agree on the Lobster Shack
WOW never heard of it and I live in Bridgton. I will have to try that one. Thanks for the tip. I also like the Galley in Naples/ Their lemon butter roll is great
Okay okay. Now, my absolute favorite places to get lobster rolls are as follows and are a MUST TRY!!!
Sturbridge seafood-it is the perfect combination with mayo-not too powerful and just enough meat.
Maine fish market and restaurant in east Windsor-biggest lobster roll I’ve ever had!!!! Enough to feed two people.
Lobster craft food truck or their restaurant in New York!! They serve CALIFORNIA lobster rolls-meaning it comes with avocado as well!!! Good chunk of lobster meat.
Stowes in West Haven best I’ve ever had
Best lobster roll was last weekend at Landfall Restaurant Woods Hole MA
This article seems to be missing some really fabulous places that I’ve found to be miles better than the rolls listed here. Bite Into Maine in Cape Elizabeth, ME is the best lobster roll I’ve ever had. Anyone who googles it will find many others feel the same! Definitely should have made the list.
I realize that it’s a seasonal offering from a fast food restaurant, but the lobster roll at Papa Ginos is pretty good!
Eventide Brown Butter in Portland!!
You Sir are the only person on this board who knows what they are talking about! Eventide in Portland has an unbeatable lobster roll. End of debate!
RHODE ISLAND
you apparently have not been to MARCHETTIS in Cranston! the BIGGEST and BEST in the state!
Amen, brother! Make ’em at home-so simple, so good!!!!!!!!!
All of you have me so homesick and wishing I was able to get any one of these fabulous places.
Missing New England loads.
I want to know why anyone would serve something so elegant and delicious in a grilled hot dog roll? Someone must be able to find some kind of home made bread or roll that is better than that!
Apparently Maine stops at the Portland city line for most people lol … and a true lobster lover knows there is a noticable difference between Maine lobster and ‘New England’ lobster…Eagle’s Nest located on Rte 9 Brewer/Eddington line has by far one of the best lobster rolls in the state
I have been eating lobster rolls in New England and Maine for over 30 years and I can tell you that the The hot dog buns that you get in Maine and other parts of New England when grilled on the sides can’t be beat and also keep the cost down (lobster was $29/ lb. You can’t get such buns anywhere in Texas or Arkansas, and according to Krogers they don’t sell them anywhere in that state.) I like the lobster rolls at the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, but not worth fighting the crowds during soft shell season, especially since they use a slightly overgrown Hamburger type bun. Alison’s restaurant uses the dog bun and if I am really hungry I get two. I once ate nine hot dogs on such buns before I learned to like lobster. Guess it’s just me, but that is something I really like.
How the heck can anyone say the best lobster rolls are south of Maine? The lobsters there are in warmer waters and grow some kind of weird bacteria on them. I’ll stay in Maine where the lobster population and the lobsters themselves are healthy. The Lobster Shack is awesome!
definitely consider Captain Al’s in Buzzards Bay. Hot lobster roll. Huge portion.
Next fav is The Raw Bar in poppenesett! Mashpee
Come on! How is Tuckaway Tavern in Raymond NH not on the list? Monday and Tuesdays, BOGO of the biggest lobstah roll EVER, of your choice cold with mayo or warm buttered. My first lobster roll was had there and now I’m ruined for anywhere else.
Thumbs up Joyce! Just commented the same.
Beach Plumb in N. Hampton is my favorite
By FAR, Tuckaway Tavern in Raymond, NH has the best lobster deal anywhere. Monday and Tuesday all year, two for price of one. Two 9oz rolls (hot or cold)…that’s 18oz of lobster meat…over a pound, for between $19 and $24 depending on time of year. Best ever! Be prepared for long wait.
As for Lobster Shack at Two Lights, ME…overpriced, about 3oz of lobster…GREAT views.
Beach Plum…tourist trap. Way too much mayo overpowers taste of lobster. Save your time and money on both.
Head down Pemaquid peninsula and you’ll find numerous spots with the best lobster rolls. New Castle, Damariscotta, Pemaquid Beach, Pemaquid Point, New Harbor, Bristol, Round Pond 🙂
Alive and Kicking – definitely the BEST!!!! I certainky second that emotion!!!
Yes!!
The hot buttered Lobster roll was first made
In Milford,CT — Perry’s Restaurant in 1927.
Libby’s Market in Brunswick should be on this list.
these are probably all very good but you need to try Kimball Farm in Lancaster, MA and Chrisanthies in Brookline N H
Respectfully, Bite into Maine lobster roll truck at the Portland Headlight in Cape Liz beats these all by a mile. Order the “Picnic Style” and you will not hanker for any other lobster roll from that day forward! You’re welcome. 🙂
I agree with Caroline. My husband and I would go to The Clam Shack every time we went to Kennebunkport. Our favorite place and restaurant to go. If no parking spot we would wait and go back. The food, no matter what you ordered is to die for and the scenery is worth every picture you can take. Miss going there we have moved and my husband is no longer with us.
The Barn Grill and Pub in Amesbury has a great lobster roll. 14.95 with fries and coleslaw.
Any discussion of a lobster roll on the Cape that doesn’t include The Raw Bar in Mashpee is incomplete. Piles of wonderfullness. Go get one and you will agree
Found this great little place thanks to my aunt & uncle. Just called The Co-op in New Harbor ME. It was great. Lobster boat come right in there and a take out window with picnic tables inside or out. Two sizes of lobster rolls. Reg. and Lg. Of course we all got large. Tons of meat. Hot butter. Can’t wait to go back.
I have friends who come down from Maine to get without a doubt the Bestl Lobster Roll in NE at The Raw Bar. At Popponesset Market Place ,Popponesset. Beach , New Seabury , Mashpee. Ma . Try one and you won’t buy another anyplace else ever again .
Well you all may make fun of them but McDonalds in the summer has a very good lobster roll on the menu
Must try Bay Harbor in Maine!!! They have amazing lobster rolls!
Red’s was by far the most decadent that I had the pleasure of eating. Bite into Maine food truck at the Portland Head Light was amazing. But the brown butter lobster roll at Eventide in Portland, Maine, is to die for.
Totally agree on Petey’s! We live in Central MA and will take a drive up on the weekend just to eat at Petey’s.
Maine lobster company in York Maine-hands down the best.
The Raw Bar in Popponesset!!
We love Abbott’s in Noank Ct but will admit that it’s also the generous size and the great
views outside of the the Mystic River and boats going by that helps.
I’ve eaten many a lobster rolls there and elsewhere….and the best places so far are
the ones that deal mostly in lobster choices. Ford’s of Noank is also great.
Love the Lobster Shack!! Went there a number of times while on vacation in Maine.
How can you make a list without including Northside Cafe in E. Dennis. There’s none better…..anywhere!
Now after all the hype, may I recommend Knuckleheads On the New Bedford waterfront home of the one pound lobster roll!
Have you tried the 99’s in Lynnfield & Stoneham, MA. There may be others. The used b to be great but I haven’t had one for a couple of years because of surgerys. Maybe this summer I will get over there to try them out again.
I left you a reply. What more do you want?
The best lobster roll in New England is in Westport, Ct.. called
Joey’s By The Sea….203 227 5356
I have never, ever, had a better lobster roll, both quality and quantity wise, than at Kelly’s Roast Beef on Revere, Beach. And, I have had them from Maine to the Cape.
Second that on Captain Scott’s- big tasty lobster rolls and a fun spot to eat- next to the marina and train tracks- fun for the kids to watch both boats and trains come and go. Much better than Abbots over in Noank- theirs are small, and over-priced
The Raw Bar in New Seabury and Hyannis. Amazing. So is Neptune in Boston
Yes the Raw Bar!!
A friend introduced me to JP’s, and I’m happy to keep it a secret! Amazing gigantic lobster roll — as long as you’re not too concerned about ambiance 🙂
Blue Lobster in Berlin CT. The generous fresh claw and tail meat, buttered on a Martins potato roll. Best I’ve ever tasted.
I think the judges need to revisit New Hampshire and visit the Beach Plum. I worked PT at the Local Harley dealer and we had Canadian visitors couldn’t (or wouldn’t)speak English but would say direction Beach Plum.
Absolutely agree with Matunuck Oyster Bar. Great place! Love it!
ABSOLUTELY the Glenwood. Have been going there since it opened and was a drive-in. Lobster in warm butter in long hot dog roll. Nothing like it….
Bayview Takeout in Beals, Maine was recently rated best lobster roll in Maine. It’s a takeout shack on the shore overlooking the lobster boats in Jonesport and Beals. Probably the freshest and firmest lobster available anywhere south of Nova Scotia. Excellent traditional lobster roll on a hotdog bun.
You neglected to mention Maine Fish Market and Restaurant in East Windsor CT, where the lobster rolls are not only the freshest you can find, but their enormous size puts hot dog rolls, buns, rolls, etc. to shame, as they are packed with delicious lobster in a hoagie/grinder roll – and it’s not a 6 inch roll! People flock to East Windsor, Connecticut’s Maine Fish Market and Restaurant to sink their teeth into one of these true heavenly Lobster Rolls……..
I have been to Beach Plum many times but I have to say that Tuckaway’s is far better,,In Raymond NH soon to open on Rt 1 in Saugas where the old HILLTOP was…. They can’t even close the roll it’s so full of claws…
I am furiously scribbling down names of places to try on my trip this fall. I hope some of these places don’t close at summer’s end! Being from Boothbay Harbor, ME and Mystic, CT, I have tried a couple of the places mentioned here. But the challenge of finding the BEST lobster roll…. I’m up for it!
Though it isn’t traditional, the lobster roll at Alive and Kicking Lobsters in Cambridge, Mass., is pretty remarkable.
Tuckaway’s Tavern in Raymond, NH is truly the best and a great bargain on Monday and Tuesdays. They are huge! Check it out❕
Stop at the Lobster Hut, Milford, Ct.
Agree, they are mighty fine along with Lobster Hut ( truck Post Rd, Milford, CT).
Best lobster roll we’ve had was at the Union Oyster House in Boston. Heaping portion of lobster with mayo, stuffed in a crusty roll. Just delicious.
Seven Seas in Milford is hands down the best. The lobster roll is just overloaded with claw meat. So good.
Milford, CT
The Wooden Shoe in South Dennis, MA …Lots of lobster on the roll with minimum dressing ; best kept secret on the Cape…
Hands down it has to be Joe’s on a Roll, an awesome food truck out of Beverly, MA. Catch their own lobsters, so fresh, big, and delicious!
Quito’s, Bristol, RI (served one of two ways — drawn butter or special sauce)
How could you forget the fabulous lobster rolls at The Black Dog in Martha’s Vineyard? My friend Pierette and I sampled many, many places over the years in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts and that’s our winner.
I’m putting some of these on my list good reason for a road trip but how is this not on the list?
http://www.therawbar.com/
No Lobster Roll in New England list is complete without the inclusion of Belle Isle Seafood in Winthrop. Tail, knuckle and claw meat mixed with light mayo. Served over crispy lettuce and allegedly a fresh hot dog bun underneath, at least that’s the rumor because when you pick up your order at the counter you can see no roll. Added bonus is location. Watch the boats come and go from the Winthrop Yacht Club or the jumbo jets come in for a landing at Boston’s Logan Airport
Barnacle Billy’s in Ogunqiit! Expensive, but worth it.
Barnacle Billy’s, Ogunquit, ME has the best lobster!!! It is comfortable place to crack open a huge 3lb lobster, because everyone else is doing it, as you sit on picnic tables right on the water! No shame in messy hands! You might even see an ex-president or 2 dining next to you!
Thank you, I was shocked no one has brought this up!
He’s missing a local classic. Joe’s On A Roll in Beverly, MA should absolutely be on the list. It’s a family run lobster truck and the lobster comes right off their own boats. As fresh as it gets and at an awesome price too! Definitely recommend it!
Abbotts in Noank CT by Mystic is unbelievable!! Nothing fancy, sit on the grass or at a picnic table facing the water, bring a bottle of wine and eat the best lobster rolls ever!!
FORD’S LOBSTERS next door to Abbotts has wonderful lobster rolls and, of course, it is in the rough and BYOB.
YES! Ford’s has what they call a Lobster Bomb: a hollowed out individual sized sourdough boule filled with 8oz. warm lobster drowned in butter. Cheap – no, AMAZING – YES! Worth every penny. They even serve off-season, we like to go in the Fall and have the place almost to ourselves.
Update on Ford’s Lobsters in Noank, CT. Late last season I was introduced to the Grilled cheese and avocado lobster sandwich…three and counting on the ones eaten this year and going back for more!
Beach Plum….who does the survey???? Have you tried the Plum???? get your butt down to one of the restaurants and then add them to the list.
I live in Newport and travel all the way to Emma’s in Bridgewater for my favorite lobster roll.. you’re missing a few on here!
Could not read all so may have been mentioned but, with the caveat that I’ve not been there in many years, The Commons Lunch in Little Compton, RI always had a yummy lobster roll. Last summer had a delicious one at Iggy’s in Warwick. All I know is that here in south FL, I am missing them big time!!
The best lobster rolls I have ever had are at Marchettis restaurant in Cranston, Rhode Island. They are huge and basically all clawmeat, which I love! The sell cold and hot (baked stuffed). I love the cold.
Tony’s Clam Shack on Wollaston Beach in Quincy MA has the biggest lobster roll I’ve personally ever eaten. It’s just a ton of meat with a light dose of mayo and smoked paprika on a toasted hot dog bun. Delicious!
I live in South Carolina and you made my mouth water with those wonderful pictures of lobster rolls. Don’t get to New England anymore (too old) but here in Fort Mill I have found them at “The Toastery”…not like Maine but they try.
My husband and I traveled from Pensacola, FL to Maine for lobster. I was recommended to Red’s for their large lobster rolls. The experience of the long wait wasn’t anything, but I guess my stomach couldn’t take the “cold” lobster. Originally from CT and raised on warm/buttered lobster rolls, after eating this I feel the cold lobster went right through me within 10 min. My poor husband had to stop several times once we left Red’s. I wished I had better memories, but for those that can eat cold lobster it was a great deal. I wished I had stopped at the little restaurant in Freeport that I had a hot lobster roll during a previous visit to Maine. I would of had better memories
I had hot buttered lobster at Red’s last summer (July, ’16) Husband had cold. Both were outstanding
Totally agree… What about Jakes Place in Wells serve hot with butter or mayo….Your choice
Liv”s Shack!!! A hidden gem in Old Saybrook, CT! Same owner of Liv”s Oyster Bar but quick serve in a marina.
Mike you should have a local blind taste test for best lobster roll!!
Beach Plum in North Hampton, N.H. is by far the very BEST!!! No tough tail meat here, just claws and knuckles…YUM!
Sprague’s Lobsters, across the street from Red’s in Wiscasset, ME. No 2 hours standing in line, great fresh lobster & fried haddock. Eating on the dock. Couldn’t be better!!
Agree! We stopped at Sprague’s on our way to Camden – I had the lobster roll and my husband had the haddock sandwich. So good we had to stop again on the way home! Highly recommend!
try a different take on the lobster roll at Eastwind Seafoods at the Bourne Rotary (Mass). it is a BLT with thick maple flavored bacon, lobster tail and secret sauce (mayo based) on a ciabatta roll. This is so good! the bacon and secret sauce make it special.
The lobster rolls at my house are very good. Toasted roll hardly any mayo and the price is always great
Realize it may have been a one-off but I had a lobster roll this summer at Abbott’s that was absolutely inedible and I was to cowardly to take it back to the counter. I was crushed because I had looked forward to a lobster roll there for years!
How did you get to RI and not discover the lobster rolls at the Matunick Oyster Bar? They are a tad expensive but Outstanding!. Of course I love lobster any way I can get it. having lived in Jerusalem for close to 36 years. We have 3 Lobster locations….Selling Lobster in some way from Live to cooked. Please come and discover us. In some places the village is very photogenic. I live in one of the original fisherman shacks. Hate the highrises. Makes us looke like the Hamptons.
Best lobster roll ever is to be had at Tony’s Clam Shack, Wollaston Beach, MA. We visit N.E. each summer and do a self guided lobster tour – always Tony’s wins for the best and biggest roll – full of lobster and a hint of mayo.
Maine is great, but you won’t find any better than the original Kimball’s in Westford, MA. It comes with a slice of watermelon and a choice of side. Kimball’s is the most incredible ice cream farm you have ever seen (I’ve been going there since the 1950’s and you must try their banana split), but they added a grill several years ago which also serves clam platters and lobster rolls. Kimball’s is right off Rte. 495. is very scenic and also has lots to do like bumper boats, miniature golf, pony rides, etc.
Apparently, you folks have never been to the “Raw Bar” at New Seabury, which is in Mashpee, MA on the Nantucket Sound. Their lobster roll is scrumptious, fresh, and plentiful! My wife must take 1/2 of it home it is so HUGE! Next time you run a comparison, you need to include the Raw Bar in your list. Thanks.
Not a fancy place, but our favorite place for lobster rolls is The Anchor in Beverly MA. The owner of the Anchor is also the captain of fleet of 5 lobster boats, so tje lobster could not be any fresher. Directly boat to table. Is the crazy cheap as well. Lobster roll comes with fries. Seriously the best!
My husband and I went to the Lobster Pool in Rockport, MA. It was not worth the ride. The lobster roll was ok. It is a shack on the side of the road. We live in New England and there are many better lobster rolls any place else. Love your magazine but disappointed in the choice .
rye harbor lobster roll is second best all day long, right behind my sister’s!
And the worst lobster roll I ever had was at a Red Lobster, somewhere between Port Charlotte and Orlando, FL ! It had ONION in it !!! All 4 of us couldn’t believe how that ruined it .
Lobster BLT at Main Street Grill in Niantic CT, everything taste better with bacon.
I never write a review, but I feel this place should not be on your list. I love lobster rolls and try them everywhere as I live in MA. I must express my disappointment in the lobster roll from the Friendly Fisherman in Eastham last week. The lobster roll is small compared to others, but was still $20. Their drinks are small, full of ice and no refills. They do not have bathrooms to even wash your hands. They had Port O Potties. Tables were outside picnic tables with tablecloths that nobody came to clean. Help didn’t seem happy. Just wasn’t happy here and certainly would not recommend for a top 10 list.
Since we’ve moved to southern NJ three years ago, I have found no restaurants in the area that serve lobster rolls. This summer our local market has had Maine lobsters for sale a few times, and I have made lobster rolls for family and friends. When we visit NH in the winter, I have liked the lobster roll at the Puritan in Manchester and I have them put the lobster in pita bread…different but still good. PS No top-split hot dog rolls around here, so bought three dozen on recent trip to NH.
No lobster rolls available in southern NJ. Making my own with Maine lobsters sold at local supermarket. When in NH, I sometimes order a lobster roll at the Puritan in Manchester and I have them put it in pita bread. Not bad for a change.
Green Spot off I95 at Waterville/Oakland.
Nuff said!
New England is not just about the tourist places like Cape Cod, Maine, Rockport – everyone seems to forget Gloucester, Ipswich, Essex, Magnolia and all the other little ocean or harbor side towns around Cape Ann. Absolutely adore Gloucester and some of the best lobstah rolls I’ve ever had came from all the little roadside stands or the clam shacks near the beaches.
The best lobster roll that I have ever had is at Captain Jack’s Roadside Shack here inland in Easthampton, MA. It is loaded with lobster and comes with fries or a salad or a great cole slaw. Bigger than any that I saw at the beach. His fish Tacos are also fantastic.
I didn’t read all the comments, so I’m not sure if anyone else shares my opinion about Lobster Roll Sandwiches. The BEST way to enjoy a Lobster Sandwich is on a Croissant – room temperature, warm, or lightly toasted -not cold! Nix butter on the lobster. Add whatever else “floats your boat” to the lobster. You’ll see…it IS the Best!
Nothing is better in this life than a good Lobster Roll!! These all look yummy but you have overlooked a delicious one on Washington Street in Duxbury, Mass! Check it out: Snug Harbor Fish Company…You are in for a treat!! Sweet town, too!!
tuckermans travern
Debra. I agree… However we need to keep TUCKAWAY Tavern a secret… if we tell folks about it… then they will go… and if those folks go when you and I go… we may have to 1.Wait or 2. Not find a seat at the Bar. Lol. Great Lobster Rolls.
Don’t forget “The Lobster Pot’ on 6A in Wareham. To die for!
Hello people! Getting your lobster rolls list ready for the season, pleeeez include The Thimbleberry, 2 Indian Point Rd in Branford CT. On the marina, small beach, and Thimble Islands where you can take a ferry. Sit on the dock, on the beach or the few chairs and tables outside and enjoy an unforgettable lobster roll. Husband and I found it last summer and can not wait to go back. Which will be as soon as possible.
Don’t go to Gino’s in Portsmouth, NH. Lobster rolls only have claws meat and cost $19.00 Oh, you get a sample bag of chips with it.
The best lobster roll any where is Marchetti in Cranston RI. You can order it warm or cold I would recommend it warmed with stuffing and butter …..
The last time I went to Marchetti’s Chris, they had taken the warm lobster roll off the menu. The cold is awesome, I agree. But I was very disappointed that they weren’t offering the warm lobster roll anymore.
Yes, any WARM lobster roll is the best!!!
Two Lights in Portland, ME and Easton Beach in Newport, RI (two small lobster rolls, fries for $12.99). Both have delicious lobster rolls and fabulous views.
Capt Cass’s on Rock Harbor Road, Orleans, Ma. has the very best lobster roll I have ever had in my life and having been living here in Ma/RI all my life I’ve had many!
Connecticut is not New England! Get your facts right. Best Lobster roll is a tiny market in Brunswick Maine called Libby’s.6,9 or 12 inch.
Where did you go to school? Of course Connecticut is part of New England…along with VT, ME, NH, MA and RI…
What part of the US did you think CT was in?
Hahaha: New Yooick
Great comment, Jason! CT seems more like a burrough of NYC.
Having been stuck in SW CT my adult working life, I agree: the only thing New England about these tri-state suburbs is the escape route called I84. High price to pay for superlative public schools.
Jason and Ann, Main reasons for leaving SW Connecticut for the fresh-air coast of Maine: claustrophobic traffic, the cost of living, competitive atmosphere, self-serving behavior. It was a no-brainer.
New England is a region which comprises six states of the Northeastern United States: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. DAH
If any state doesn’t belong in New England it’s Vermont. Land locked state, no coast line. And I grew up in Vermont.
You all are getting off the subject. Critique lobster rolls.
BEACH PLUM – Hampton and Portsmouth NH
Beach Plum does have the the best lobster rolls!
Yes they do
Without a doubt!
You missed The Lobster Pot in West Wareham Mass, so clearly you have not done enough research.
Muscongus Lobster Pound, Round Hill, ME. Butter on whole wheat, with insane haddock chowda and corn bread.
Marc, you are right on the spot! The Lobster Pot is right up there as a serious contender of the title of “The Best” lobster rolls in New England. They also have all kinds of other amazing seafood. My beautiful spouse and I are serious addicts to their delicious and reasonably priced menu items.
I love Marchetti’s in Cranston, RI for their Lobster Roll. Hands down the best.
Marchettis is the Best for the biggest Lobster Roll in New England, try it you won’t be disappointed…????
Unfortunately..The lobster roll at Marchetti’s is off the menu right now. We were there last week. Market price is too high right now, and they don’t want to pass the price on to the patrons. Not sure if it will back on this season. Just to clarify though…Marchetti’s does have the BEST!
We were also there last weekend and wanted the Lobster Roll and was told the same thing boy!!! were we so disappointed it sure is the best Lobster Roll u can fine anywhere NOW looking for another place for Lobster Rolls NO SUCCESS lol
For all of us lovers of the lobster rolls at Marchetti’s I just spoke to them and was told that unfortunately they won’t have any until next summer (IF the price of lobster drops). Talk about breaking our hearts!!
THE STANDARD BY WHICH I JUDGE ALL LOBSTER ROLLS IS THE NOW DEFUNCT (MAY THEY REST IN PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) SIM’S OF LEWISTON AND AUBURN, MAINE (THEY HAD 2 RESTAURANTS). THEIR WARM, HUGE, BUTTERED BRIOCHE ROLLS “HELD” COPIOUS QUANTITIES OF WARM LOBSTER MIXED, ALSO, WITH A COPIOUS AMOUNT OF WARM MAYO. THIS IS HOW I MAKE THEM AT HOME. IN THE BOSTON AREA, WHERE I HAVE LIVED SINCE 1976, THERE IS A LOCAL BAKERY, IGGY’S, THAT MAKES WONDERFUL BRIOCHE ROLLS THAT I ALWAYS KEEP IN THE HOUSE. I AM ALSO LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO CHOOSE, LITERALLY WITH MY OWN HANDS, MAINE LOBSTERS, WHICH REALLY DO TASTE THE BEST, WHICH IS ALSO WHAT I GREW UP ON VISITING “GRAMPY” IN GARDINER, ME, WHO TOOK ME TO A SHACK ON THE KENNEBEC RIVER NAMED BROWNIE’S, ON SUNDAY NIGHTS IN THE WINTER (IN THE SUMMER WE WENT TO OLD ORCHARD BEACH, ME WHERE GRAMPYS’ SISTER, AUNT ROSE, OWNED THE HOTEL VESPA, WHICH WAS THE SCENE OF MY BEING SPOILED ROTTEN BY GRAMPY AND AUNT ROSE), WHICH ONLY SOLD BATTER FRIED CLAMS, I THINK THEY CHARGED 39 CENTS FOR A PAPER PLATE, WHICH I COULD EAT ALL BY MYSELF. IT WAS ALWAYS DARK WHEN GRAMPY TOOK ME THERE AND THE WINDOWS ALWAYS HAD STEAM FROM THE HEAT OF THE FRYERS. SIM’S ALSO HAD OUTSTANDING BATTER FRIED CLAMS AND SO DID THE MEXICO CHICKEN COOP, IN MEXICO, ME, WHICH WAS ON OUR WAY HOME FROM ONE OF MY MOTHERS’ BROTHERS’ HOMES. I AGREE WITH “THEY’RE BETTER MADE IN YOUR OWN HOME, LADIES!!!!!!!!!!!” I ONLY BUY FEMALE LOBSTERS NOW BECAUSE I DISCOVERED MANY YEARS AGO THEY TASTE MUCH BETTER THAN MALES! GRAMPY WAS MY FATHERS’ FATHER. HE, UNFORTUNATELY, IS BURIED WITH GRAMMY IN A NICE SMALL CEMETERY IN PORTLAND, ME APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE FROM THE PORTLAND, ME AIRPORT, WHERE THE 911 FIASCO BEGAN…
You all need to try The Bull & Claw in Wells ME. 2′ & meat from 3 lobsters on a french baget” WOW!
HI again! I meant to tell you more about Sim’s and got so wrapped up in my enthusiasm for them I forgot these other details. We were there for lunch several times and dinner more than lunch. At night they had a red neon lobster sign that was huge in their parking lot. At night we often had to wait for tables, no surprise!!!!!!!!!, during which time mom and dad allowed me to “check out” their low lobster pools, which were always crammed to the gills with lobsters! I have always found lobster pools very entertaining!!!!!!!! Where I buy them now I get to pick my own out of their pools, which wasn’t allowed at Sim’s. I also remember several gallon jars of outstanding mayo (it might have been Cains, but I’m not sure, which is what I use at home because my husbands’ family preferred it to Hellmann’s…lately I have seen commercials locally, in the Boston area, for duke’s mayo, which I have had when I was visiting friends in NC, which is also very good, I have to admit, since they didn’t have Cains there) lining the walls! Speaking of lobsters, Valle’s, which had 2 locations in Portland, 1 in s. Portland, 1 in Kittery and a few others, 1 in Braintree, ma and 1 in savannah, ga, had a daily double on lobsters on wed and Fri, for $2.95 for 2. My father used to close his store on wed afternoon in the summer, when it wasn’t busy for him, and we drove 100 miles to Portland for him to do some business errands at emery Waterhouse Co., which was a hardware distributor. He also had “race track buddies” who used to take turns driving on Valle’s daily double days, to Scarborough downs, after which they went out for the daily double and were home in time for the 11:00 pm news to get the racing results of the races they missed. My father was quite an odds calculator!!!!!!!! He made a lot of $ there. On Labor Day they had a matinee. He got sun stroke on their honey moon in Niagra Falls, NY, and he spent his summers at old orchard beach, me, so he stayed in the social room and watched red sox games at aunt Roses’ hotel! After the beach (for some strange reason it never rained on labor day!!!!!!!!!!) We drove to the race track to meet dad and he placed bets for my horses of choice. Mine always at least placed, so my father finally asked me how I chose my horses, so I told him “my handicap secret/strategy”: I had always noticed dapple grey horses can really run fast, so I always had him bet on them for me and my other choices were ones that “looked pretty”, which were almost always chestnut brown. Valle’s also had steamers for $1.25, which is often what I ate there, which I also love. My mother liked their plank steak, which was served on a plank, obviously, which was also really something. They served iceberg lettuce wedges with 1,000 island dressing, which was also really outstanding. Their lettuce was so cold it was incredible. They also served bread sticks. There was another unbelievable restaurant there, in Monmouth, me, called McNamara’s. I never minded waiting in line there because their food was so outstanding. I think we had to wait at Valle’s a lot, too. May they all rest in peace!!!!!!! We always got the Valle’s lobsters baked stuffed…yum!!!!!!!!! It never rained on my birthday, 6/1, when I was young. We always had my parties in our back yard. I have had several thunder storms living in the Boston area that date and several miserably hot days that date. This year the extended forecast is in the low 70’s and sunny. Thanks to Yankee magazine “reminding me” of “how fun” Longfellow’s Wayside Inn is in Sudbury, MA I am having dinner there with 2 friends, including lobster bisque!!!!!!!!!!
Best lobster roll by far is at PJ’s in Wellfleet, MA–huge and unadulterated!!
The lobster rolls at the Clam Shack are over-rated and over-priced. The lobster itself is good and fresh, if a little hard to eat as it is big chunks. The rolls looked and tasted like store-bought hamburger buns, no buttered toast. Not worth the drive, and waiting in line!
McLoon’s in South Thomaston, ME is the best Lobster Roll. Beal’s in Southwest Harbor is in the top five.
Guilford Lobster Pound in Guilford, CT; Westbrook Lobster in Wallingford, CT; Dead Eye Dick’s on Block Island; Captain Scott’s in New London; C-Ray’s in Bar Harbor and the Little Red Grille in Plainville, CT The criteria: quality, consistent freshness and flavor, artful prep of roll and hot butter and warm lobster, plus value. Can’t go wrong with any of these.
I can’t believe no one is mentioning The Ice House in Rye. Superb lobster rolls. The Beach Plum, which many claim is the best, freezes their lobster! Ugh!
Most places in Maine do NOT serve lobster rolls,…..they serve lobster SALAD roll….has to be a toasted roll with lots of melted butter
The best Lobster Rolls are at the Tuckaway Tavern. This lobster expert needs to get out more.
The best lobster roll in New England is at Supreme Seafood in North Branford, CT. Maine ,Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire make them with mayonnaise, I don’t want an expensive tuna fish sandwich. I want lobster sauteed in butter, on a buttered Italian hoagie, toasted and buttered, that tastes like lobster not glorified tuna fish.
Howards Drive-In West Brookfield Mass, great lobster roll and seafood!! Lots of other specials also
When in Newport, RI, try the overstuffed lobster roll at Brick Alley on Thames Street – it never disappoints!
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Bayley’s Lobster Pound in Scarborough. Great large roll, lots of lobster not too much mayonnaise.
No one mentioned it because of the MAYONAISE
The Lobstah Buoy. This food truck in Bangor, Maine has delicious lobster rolls!
I search high and wide for the best lobster roll all over the country and you guys have it right in your back yard in Boston’s South End! LOBSTAH ON A ROLL is by far the most amazing roll I have ever had! There is no question this is the best. Offered three ways. New England Style with a little mayo and I mean a little so it’s not a mayo sandwich, naked with nothing and Connecticut Style warm with butter. They even give you an additional side of butter from the lobster itself. In addition the homemade Chowder is off the charts! They are going to be on Phantom Gourmet and a show called Wicked Bites. They have already been on the Food Network (that’s how I found them). You gotta go guys and gals.
I forgot their small lobster roll called a Standard has almost a half of a pound of meat not including adding anything to it!
What is the name of this place in Boston’s south end with the lobster rolls?
They are in Boston’s South End. 537 Columbus Ave
Pemaquid Lobster Co-op. A beautiful, perfect lobster roll. Way off the beaten path but worth the ride.
While Anthony’s in Ri is really great for a lot of things I wouldn’t say their lobster rolls are the best. Try Blount as they have 2 sizes of lobster rolls and NEVER disappoint any of our guests. They also come with a choice so sides some of which are even healthy. They are our favorite!
As a born and bred Bostonian I am raised with lobster. Every True New Englander knows a Lobster sandwich has NO Mayo , ever.
True! I liken mayo on a lobster roll to another seafood horror: clam strips!
Poor Peoples Pub, Block Island. The large buttered lobster roll is the best I’ve had. If it isn’t a whole lobster its close to it.
What about the amazing lobster rolls from LobsterCraft in Fairfield? The owner is actually a commercial lobsterman so how cool is that? I first came across them at a friend’s party in Greenwich when they were just a food truck. Now they have a lobster shack in Fairfield that’s geared more for take away but they do have outdoor seating as the weather improves. So the lobster rolls (they have 5 different types plus they offer a cold style one called the dirty Maynard which is funny because mayo makes the lobster dirty). The traditional style roll they call a coastal I think. Delicious, sweet knuckle and claw meat, the perfect amount of butter on these awesome custom baked buttered, split top rolls. The bread is killer. The lobster is out of this world. You can plus up the lobster with what they call the fatty. Their lobster bacon lettuce tomato roll is decadent and the perfect combination of flavors. Surf and turf is crazy good. Beyond their lobster rolls the also have THE Best New England claw chowder. Insanely good. Hands down the best lobster roll in Connecticut!
It’s so disappointing to see these lists when it is clear the authors have not even tried to sample all of the lobster shacks in New England. Come to Block Island and visit us at Southeast Light Delights. We’re a lobster roll food truck located at the iconic Southeast Lighthouse. Fresh shucked claw knuckle and tail meat. Google us for reviews. Don’t just visit the places on trip advisor or yelp, the best places are the best kept secrets.
Beach Plum in Hampton and Portsmouth NH, hands down best lobstah roll
Beach Plum in Portsmouth, best I’ve ever had, loaded with meat.
The Beach Plumb in Hampton, NH is AMAZING‼️ Their lobster rolls are absolutely fantastic……some of the very best I’ve ever had & I’ve had plenty. Plus their ice cream cones are humongous so start with a small & work your way up. Love me some Beach Plumb. Highly recommend it‼️
Beach Plum in Hampton is incredible. I had Reds and they were good but def not worth the wait for me. Beach Plum is where I go and I live 90 mins away.
Totally agree!
Sprague’s Lobster roll is the best!
Red Barn, Augusta Maine. Best lobster role. All lobster meat!
Heading to Iconic Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine? I defy you to find a better lobster roll than the beauty offered at the Original Travelin’ Lobster. Stop by~you won’t regret it!
Totally agree – they’re Lobster Roll was huge and fabulous.
I never understand why Red’s Eats is recommended, probably one of the most overrated restaurants in New England, but I guess it is a tradition for people who wouldn’t know good food if it ate them. So many other better choices.
Red Barn in Augusta is A W E S O M E .
On the back end of my lobster boat in Monhegan Harbor yesaaa
They are all legal size also RIGHT yesaaaaa
LDI (Little Deer Isle) just across the Deer Isle-Sedgewick Bridge has THE BEST lobster roll in downeast Maine. Deer Isle/Stonington has the largest lobster landing in all of the state of Maine. Don’t you think we’ll also have the best and freshest lobster rolls? Sheesh!
Everyone in Maine knows that Sprague‘s everyone knows, Sprague’s Lobster rolls in Wiscasset are by far better the best lobster rolls. You can have it hot or cold version with butter or mayo. More lobster meat than any other s. Check them out. ????
I was hoping someone would mention Sprague’s which is across the street from Red’s Eats. Sprague’s has by far the better roll between the two. Loaded with big chunks of lobster so much that you can’t eat it without eating half the lobster first. My mom and dad bought some at Red’s and they were inedible. They had to go home and throw away the soggy rolls and remake them themselves. They also gave my mother the wrong size drink with the wrong soda in it!
Hi Maureen. We have a whole post dedicated to Sprague’s as the official Red’s alternative! You can see it here: https://newengland.com/today/travel/maine/spragues-lobster-wiscasset-maine/
Liv’s Shack, Old Saybrook! No Mayo!
Hey why dont you host a lobster throw down???
May not have good views of the ocean, but Frankie’s in Waterbury, CT (and other locations) has great buttery lobster rolls!
MAJEK’s in China Maine has the best lobster rolls around. Their large must have at least 3 lobsters worth of meat in them.
Red’s earts in Wiscassett should not even be on this list. It is just a tourist trap with crappy food. I live 30 minutes from it and only tourists go to it, no locals. Red Barn in Augusta has a huge lobster roll and is way better than Red’s eats. McDonald’s almost makes a better lobster roll than Red’s does on their little hotdogs bun. Come on, travel a little more besides tourist traps.
Agreed. Red’s is living off its reputation. Not far away, 10 mins south of Cook’s Corner on Rt 24 is a small place called The Gurnet. Great fresh lobster roll, no waiting.
The “clam shack” in kittery maine is a total rip off. lousy food, lousy lobster. too long a wait, bad parking. buy your own lobster, take it home and do it yourself !!!
I couldn’t agree more, total waste of a drive, to park nowhere, also overpriced. Under Portions as well.
Totally agree! Tourist trap. We learned our lesson a few years ago. My husband took me there for Mother’s Day – loved the outing. Absolutely hated the food and prices. Never again!
I have lived in Maine my whole life, (49 years) and I have traveled quite a bit while sampling lobster rolls all over. Red’s Eats is by far the best and deserve to be top of the list. For those who say it is a tourist trap, no. The line may be long, but the reward is great. You will not find a better, larger, or fresher lobster roll anywhere. The service is also amazing. Everytime I have been, honestly I do try to go off season to avoid the lines, but my we are greeted with a friendly smile. The workers have so much personality. They even hand out refreshments and snacks to the line. Love this place so much. They are a wonderful asset to their town and Maine!!
Reds is the greatest ever
Best lobster rolls are at Bay St Deli in Watch Hill, RI. Plenty of lobster and just enough butter or mayo to hold together on a crusty baguette,
You forgot to add the Blue Marlin in Essex, MA with mostly tail and knuckle meat and very few claws. Also if you want to grab a quick lobster roll at a fish market to go Rowand’s In Beverly, MA makes excellent lobster rolls too!!
Anyplace that doesn’t use frozen Canadian lobster meat. That will take out the tourist traps such as Beach Plum. Support US fishermen and women, buy local! Try the Yankee Fisherman’s Co-op in Seabrook, New Hampshire. Get some of their pure no salt or additives lobster meat and make tour own however you like. All their lobsters are brought to their dock and sold or shipped within a day or two. Yankee also offers a wide selection of fish, shrimp, and shellfish. One stop shopping for your backyard or pool side clambake!
When you’re considered the best, seems like everyone wants to pull you down. That’s what Red’s Eats has to deal with year after year because they are the tops in lobster rolls as well as many other things on their menu. Red’s combine fresh food with impeccable customer service. I come from a long line of fishermen some of them still in the fishing industry in Narragansett and Newport and I can tell you Red’s Eats gives you quantity and quality. The best seafood is prepared simply. Some folks think the more they put on seafood the better it will taste. If it’s FRESH seafood, you don’t need to drown it in mayo or butter or spices. No need to when it’s FRESH. Tourists go there because they’ve heard the buzz that it’s the place to go for fresh lobster roll not encumbered with mayonnaise or butter. All that is on othe side. You Mainers should be proud of your own because Red’s promotes Maine products, i.e. butter, hot dog bun, ice cream AND local businesses. And rightfully so has put the little town of Wiscassett on the map, for Pete’s sake! So they’re helping the cause of other Maine businesses. Yankee Magazine does itself no favors by giving Red’s a left-handed compliment stating there’s an hour-long or more wait in line. Long lines happen when a place has good food! Ask Hodgie’s Ice Cream in Salisbury, MA or Del’s Lemonade, a RI institution all have long lines. We’d always frequent Ben and Mildre’s Fried Chicken on the way to the Cape. There always were long lines. We waited in line like everyone else because the food was worth the wait. People wait for a good product. Maybe Red’s take the heat because they have been written up by many publications and heralded by American chef and TV foodie, Andrew Zimmerman. Don’t know. Red’s Eats really is the standard by which every other lobster rolls are judged. Don’t poohoo Red’s Eats NE Today and Yankee Magazine. Green does not become you.
grace church, vineyard haven, ma, fridays………THE best
Little Harbor Lobster Company in Marblehead, MA-the BEST! Overflowing lobster rolls, ocean views, and fresh from their own boat and from local lobstermen. A little out of the way but is the best we’ve ever had.
The Log Jam restaurant in Lake George New York has the biggest and best lobster roll anywhere, you have to try it
For anyone saying they’re a born and bred in (pick a state) and mayo doesn’t belong a lobster roll… Long before Lobster rolls had a top 10 list the were served off a hot dog cart or out of the back of a car along the side of some rural road on a hot dog bun with mayo. I’d drive up Maine w/ my grandparents as a kid and take some bass ackwards road to get to their house and stop on the side of rt. 1 to get a lobster roll from a guy in a station wagon.
Mayo is fine IF you enjoy it! I don’t!!! So, one with mayo for my darling husband and one with warm melted butter for me.
Cannot believe that Sesuit Harbor Cafe in Dennis, Ma is not on the list. Not only is the lobster roll tops, but the setting for eating it (al fresco of course) is second to no e!
I agree!
Agreed!!
I agree!
Agreed! Finally mentioned the comments. Would have entered it myself if it wasn’t already listed. The harbor views are as wonderful as the food!
I had the best lobster roll in Beals Maine on Perio point rd. At bayview take out. Not cheap at $23. But fresh buttered lobster on a toasted Kaiser roll with bacon was over the top add on a side of crispy fried jalapeños and wow! It was so big I had them cut it in half because I was sure I couldn’t eat the whole thing in one sitting, but I couldn’t help myself! Delish, ate it all! ????
Loved your comment. Sounds mouth-watering. I must save the name and visit some time in the future. In southern Georgia but have always wanted to visit Maine. Now I have a reason. Thank you. 🙂
Johnson’s Dairy Bar, New Durham, NH. Lots of claw meat, which I prefer. 2 sizes. Does come with a bit of celery and a thin coating of mayo. I’m sure they would change the mayo for butter if asked. It is cold, I can’t imagine them hot. Request the bread at the start. They have over 40 flavors of very good ice cream, and over 40 beers on tap. All the seafood is good, but we always go for the overflowing lobster rolls when we drive back to Vermont from Peaks Island, Maine. Note: Do not have a lobster roll on Peaks Island. Buy lobsters down front, and cook them yourself instead. 1 1/2 lbs is the perfect size for a lobster. Eat two if you want. A 3 lb lobster belongs in a stew!
Another Massachusetts restaurant that serves great lobster rolls and deserves mentioning is the 4 Leaf Clover in Bernardston. Nothing fancy, but absolutely the best 10″ lobster rolls. Served with great French fries and tasty coleslaw. So good. While it’s an hour’s drive for me to get there, it’s well worth it.
Mike Urban has the best job in the world. Great piece Mike!!!
The Quahog Republic Whalers Tavern in New Bedford has one of the best Lobster Rolls Eva!!! Makes a Tear come to a Glass Eye!!
I totally agree that The Quahog Republic has the BEST Lobster rolls hands down!
Belle Isle Seafood in Winthrop is one of the best Lobstah rolls in New England – 1/2 pound on every roll and and it’s hot and fresh right outta the watch in the back yard – dine in or out of the house on picnic tables and watch flights from Logan – awesome place
I agree! I grew up in Winthrop and that is a local favorite. Good food, good people and who doesn’t want to see the planes flying low to land on an adjacent runway.
I am a big fan of Surfside Subs in Gloucester, MA for their lobster rolls. Not only do they purchase fresh lobster, cook and pick it, but they make their own rolls. It is bigger than a hot dog roll, with a touch of sweetness to it, then it is buttered and grilled. The sweetness of the roll and the saltiness of the butter compliments the lobster oh so well…no fillers needed. 🙂
Clam Shack, overpriced, under portions. The picture looks great, cost me $ 54. For a roll, small order of clams and a drink. Would never go back. Must have played off Phantom a ton for the rating they gave um. Waste of time, and money.
I agree about the Clam Shack, the drek served there is an embaressment.
$54 dollas for a lobster roll and small class and soda? That sounds wicked expensive. Is that what a meal goes for now on the coast? I remember when $4 for a lobster roll was wicked expensive.
No doubt the very, very best is McDonalds. It’s McFabulous
I like the Keag Store in South Thomaston, Maine. I take all of my visiting company there.
Makris in Loudon New Hampshire. The best seafood around. The fried lobster is delicious and the lobster roll is filled with chunks of juicy lobster. Only place I go for seafood in New England, was born and raised in NH now living in Arkansas. Planning a trip up this spring.
I love Makris’ too!!
LOL!! I’ve never seen so many comments! We ARE passionate about our lobstah rolls. Honestly I prefer my own because I add celery, onion, Old Bay and mayo. Probably sacrilege but everyone I serve loves it!!
Jay’s is the best one I’ve had so far. First thing we do when we get to Portland(I’m from Indiana), is put our bags in the hotel(Hilton Waterfront) and walk on over to Jay’s for steamers and a lobster roll.. So yummy!
respectfully disagree on the Choice of Reds Eats in Wiscasset. to wait along a traffic and exhaust laden route 1, to and then to be served a mediocre lobster roll by rude people wasn’t a great experience. By Comparison McLoons, a family owned Spruce head delight not only has the best Lobster rolls but also other tasty delights. (try the grilled clams and corn) https://www.mcloonslobster.com/. The location is spectacular with a working fishing fleet and beautiful harbor serving as the backdrop to the cook shack, covered picnic area and other seating scattered about the park like grounds. If you have a sweet tooth you will enjoy the adjacent ice cream shack. McLoons is a real taste of Maine, the way life should be!!!
Hi James! Yankee Senior Food Editor Amy Traverso agrees with you about McLoons — so much so that she named it the best lobster roll in Maine in a 2017 Yankee feature. We’ve added her pick to the bottom of this post to give McLoons its proper love.
McLoon’s is our all time favorite!!! The setting & the lobster rolls!!!
I’ve said it before, ya gotta try the Over stuffed Lobster Roll at Brick Alley Pub in Newport – it’s always great – not too much mayo – great flavors!!
Just had one of these 3 days ago: fantastic!!
THERE’S ONLY ONE LOBSTER ROLL IN THE UNIVERSE……LOBSTER LANDING IN CLINTON……NUFF SAID!!
If there’s a lobster roll better than those at the Lobster Shack in Ogunquit, I don’t know if my soul could take it. Now, I say that as a total neophyte, having done a “leaf-peeping” trip last autumn through five New England states, but my Texan heart is pretty much convinced I could live quite happily in New England with a weekly trip to the Lobster Shack. Maybe it was the glorious day, maybe it was being on vacation with my BFF, maybe Al of the above, but we’re already planning a return trip once we’re released from coronavirus lockdown. And we may be looking for a permanent home in Ogunquit … Wonder if the Lobster Shack would hire a couple of middle-aged, doddery women? Will work for lobster rolls …
I could have written that but I live in Windsor ontario
The BEST lobster rolls are at MY HOUSE!!! Freshest steamed lobster. Grilled brioche buns and no adulterations. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!
A lobster roll has to be on brioche!
It should be top 30 because there are so many more throughout coastal New England and to limit this to the top 10 is largely unfair. Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock in New London, CT is truly awesome plus the setting is remarkable.
Epic fail!! By far and away, the best lobster roll in New England is at a small shack far from the coast in a little town named Easthampton, MA. The place: CAPTAIN JACK’S SEAFOOD SHACK..hands down the best! And it comes with handmade fries..
Best lobster roll is from Salty’s lobster dog and more in Rockport ma. Fresh lobster everyday, loaded, butter or mayo, no fillers all lobster, you will need to stop by if you are in Rockport ma
Sprague’s Lobster roll across from Red’s in Wiscasset Maine is the best I have ever had.
I’m hungry!
Wow all sounds great! Miss visiting Maine and New Hampshire and all the great places we have had Lobster rolls.
I’d like to add two more fab lobster roll venues:
Mike’s Clam Sack in Wells, ME and the Maine Moose in Coventry, CT. NEVER had a better drawn butter lobster roll than at these two places. Even Better than Abbott’s In The Rough on the CT shoreline…and those are great! ????
How did you ever miss Red’s of Wiscasset, me…far and away the LOBSTER ROLL LEADER. BETTER GET THERE EARLY…THE LINES ARE HUMUNGOUS!!!
No, you missed it. It’s the third one listed.
Lobster Roll that is budget friendly and no line is at a tiny place in the Reny’s parking lot at 83 Elm Street, Camden, Maine 04843. Last year $11.00
They have the best lobster and crabmeat rolls I’ve ever had! It’s my first stop whenever I visit Camden!
Lived in Camden lived in Plymouth Ma. The food truck in Camden is great! The place across the street from Reds Eats in Wiscasset Me is better and you don’t have to wait in that crazy line.
It’s obvious to me that Mike Urban has never set foot in Southeastern CT. Between New London and Stonington there’s well-known places such as Abbott’s Lobsters, Sea Swirl and Capt. Scott’s. These places and others serve superb clams and lobster meals whether it be lobster or clam roll, fried clams, scallops and fish. By the way, who serves friend clams or lobster on a slice of white bread? What else is on the menu, PB&J on white bread with the crust removed?
Mike Urban has visited every place in New England with a cash box and a food license.
He’s the most knowledgeable food reporter I’ve ever read. I respect your loyalty to SE CT and I share it, but please recognize and embrace his greater circle of wonderful locations.
Can’t believe you did not chose Lobster Hut in Plymouth, MA!!
Check it out!!
Love Lobster!
We love the Lincolnville Lobster Pound in Maine, and the Sesuit Harbor Cafe on Cape Cod!! Please tell me Yankee has been to both.
Well living in California, the best place for Lobster Rolls: Lobster West in Encinitas California. I know, not Cape Cod, or Maine, but hey they are delicious !!!
Just had THE best lobster roll ever at Thames Waterside Bar & Grill, Bristol, Rhode Island. Largest I’ve ever had with the most tender lobster – light on mayonnaise with chopped celery and lettuce on a brioche roll. We could not believe the generous amount of lobster meat and will definitely return to this great restaurant with a gorgeous view and great service in this charming town.
Liv’s Shack Old Saybrook/Clinton
Toasted Roll & Butter
#nomayo
I lived in the Lewiston/Abrun area of Maine 1950/1958 and would eat lobster rolls from gas stations and small lunch shacks that were served on a tosted hamburger bunand were in a warm cream? sauce. It seemed that they would have the lobster and sauce in a crock pot? then grill up a hamburger bun and scoop on the lobster. As I remenber a Hot Dog was $0.10, Hamburger $ 0.20 and a Lobster roll $0.35. Any idea how to make this?
Lobster rolls aren’t that tough Good fresh lobster , quality butter and a simple toasted roll served warm. No lettuce, mayo or other “foreign” ingredients. and for heaven’s sake, no cold lobster. . The hardest part is the fresh lobster. The closer you are to the lobster boat the better.
