For Jon Vaughan, a landscape photographer and gallery owner on Cape Cod, honoring the unique beauty of the Cape is a never ending but always satisfying challenge. A self-taught photographer, Jon has been photographing for more than 30 years and never tires of trying to be at the right place at the right time. Many times he “pre-visualizes” a composition and returns often (many days in a row — and sometimes many years in a row) to a particular site until there is a perfect conjunction of subject, light, weather and tide.
Although Jon prints his photographs using state of the art 21st Century digital technology, his camera equipment is late 20th Century. He hauls around a 1984 medium format Hasselblad film camera mounted on a 15 pound Gitzo tripod and always shoots at the smallest aperture. Jon says he will not give up the visual sensation of transparency film until they stop producing his favorite — Fuji Provia (RDP III).
The images featured here are from his 144 page book Coastal Effects, a tribute to Cape Cod and the Islands.
Jon Vaughan’s work can be seen year round at his Cape Cod gallery Yankee Ingenuity, located in Chatham, MA.
